Please accept my best wishes that you and your family will enjoy a blessed and wonderful 2016. I hope your family is rested and relaxed after a two-week reprieve from the schedule and work of school. I have enjoyed seeing our students and their families in the community and hearing stories about their holiday travel and activities. As a reminder, school resumes tomorrow.

Deadline to file applications for place on the ballot
for May 7, 2016 Fort Bend ISD Board Election is Feb. 23
Individuals who are seeking to run for Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustee Position 3 and Position 7 seats may file applications for a place on the ballot beginning Wednesday, January 20, 2016 through Tuesday, February 23, 2016. Individuals must file applications in person at the FBISD Administration Building (16431 Lexington Blvd., Sugar Land 77479) during regular business hours, Monday - Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

January Board of Trustees Meetings
The January 2016 FBISD Board of Trustees meetings will be held on the following dates:
- January 11 - Called Meeting and Agenda Review Workshop, 6:00 p.m.
- January 19 (Tuesday) - Regular Board Meeting, 6:00 p.m.

Information Technology Community Meetings set for January 26, 27
Fort Bend ISD invites parents and community members to one of two informational meetings regarding the development of the District's Strategic Educational Technology Plan, which will address future technology needs of FBISD students and teachers. The meetings will be held from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 26, and Wednesday, January 27 in the main auditorium at the Administrative Annex (3119 Sweetwater Blvd., Sugar Land, 77479).

FBISD actively soliciting small business participation for Construction and Renovation Services Projects
Kick-off Meeting Planned for Jan. 19
The Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees approved a Small Business Enterprise Program for construction services projects in the amount of $50,000 or greater. In conjunction with the District's $484 million 2014 Bond Program construction and renovation projects, the District's Business Opportunity Services Team will hold a kick-off meeting on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at the Fort Bend ISD Purchasing and Facilities Management Offices located at 555 Julie Rivers Drive in Sugar Land (77478). The meeting will provide information on "how to do business."

FBISD salutes its valuable mentoring team!
During the month of January, Fort Bend ISD joins the nation in observing National Mentoring Month in recognition of all the individuals who generously volunteer their time to helping children succeed in school, and in life. Research shows that mentoring supports the basic needs of affection, approval, belonging and security while improving a student's social and emotional well-being, self-confidence, and attitude to learning.

Fort Bend ISD's Elementary Honor Choir preparing for upcoming TMEA Concert
Community invited to free preview performances on January 26 and February 9
The Fort Bend ISD Elementary Honor Choir is busy preparing for its upcoming performance at the 2016 Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Concert. The 125-member choir, which includes students from each of the District's 46 elementary schools, is one of only two district-wide honor choirs and among only eight state choirs invited to perform at the TMEA annual convention. The choir will perform on February 12 at 1:30 p.m. at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio.

District's high school marching bands end fall season
Fort Bend ISD is proud of the accomplishments of its high school marching bands. These talented groups ended their fall competition season with a blast, earning numerous awards and honors at region, area and state competitions.

Ross Blacklock to play in U.S. Army All-American Bowl
Ross Blacklock, Elkins High School Defensive Tackle, will join an elite group of All-Americans for the 2016 U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio's Alamodome on Saturday, January 9. Blacklock is one of only nine Texas athletes and the only FBISD athlete selected to play in the East vs. West match-up game, which will be televised live on NBC at 12:00 p.m. CST.

Elkins football team's toy drive benefits elementary kids
Elkins High School "Knights" Varsity Football team players and coaches helped make the holidays bright for approximately 30 Lantern Lane Elementary School students who benefitted from the team's annual toy drive held at the high school.

Crockett Middle School Maverick Institute draws crowd of life-long learners
More than 100 parents attended the third annual Maverick Institute, proving that students aren't the only ones being educated these days. Hosted by Crockett Middle School, the event provides parents with tools and resources to help students succeed.

Briargate Elementary students surprised with new bikes
Thirty Briargate Elementary School students received bicycles for their outstanding character and leadership skills from a local Academy store. Academy reaches out to schools annually and donates bikes to deserving students.

FBISD closed for MLK Holiday, Jan. 18
All Fort Bend ISD schools and offices will be closed on Monday, January 18 for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday. The District will resume regular business hours and students will return to class on Tuesday, January 19.
