Ikon Science Newsletter - September 2015
Dear Colleague,

Although 2015 business continues to operate under a challenging financial environment related to low oil and gas prices, Ikon Science remains resolutely focused towards the future, notably with the sustained development of new and improved technologies aligned with our customers' needs.

Check out this month's new release of the ever more powerful and integrated RokDoc platform, RokDoc 6.3, and two new RokDoc Plug-ins for the Petrel* platform. This investment shows our unwavering commitment to our growing user community. We believe these products provide the best science, efficient technologies and workflows to add value across reservoir, exploration and drilling activities.

Our combination of highly qualified geoscientists and engineers, with smart and user-friendly software is a unique force. We are particularly proud that our Quantitative Solutions groups are winning high profile vendor benchmark tests across all our regions. Their rigorous attention to detail, deep expertise and peer review prior to delivery, all ensure that accurate and relevant results are delivered at the end of a project.

Please read on, enjoy our newsletter and thank you for your interest in our ongoing development.

Best regards,

Martyn Millwood Hargrave

2 x new RokDoc Plug-ins for Petrel*
Ikon Science adds fundamental capabilities to the Petrel* platform with our range of RokDoc Plug-ins, and with these releases, we now have 9 in our portfolio!
Our Petrel* Plug-ins allow users to adopt QI workflows in their organisation, with a much shallower learning curve. Ikon is one of only three Ocean Certified Partner vendors.

1.
Pore Pressure Calculator Plug-in for Petrel*
This plug-in streamlines the process of creating, displaying and analysing lithostatic pressure profiles and normal compaction trends, which are needed for accurate pressure analysis. These can then be used to predict pore pressures using a set of industry standard models.

2. PressureView Plug-in for Petrel* provides:
  • A comprehensive pressure visualisation and interpretation environment
  • The ability to fit gradients to understand fluids and pressure regimes
  • And to flip between pressure, overpressure and equivalent mud weight plots

Advanced Seismic Data Conditioning
Optimal Seismic for QI: Ikon & PetroTrace Global combine QI workflows with advanced SDC capabilities.
The collaboration is aimed at getting seismic processing right for quantitative interpretation (QI) and inversion using an integrated processing and inversion workflow. Data from the QI workflow and intermediate tests can be used throughout the seismic processing workflow to ensure the final seismic data is optimised for seismic inversion. Reservoir geology from seismic
Ji-Fi is an innovative and unique deterministic inversion that uses partial angle stacks and solves jointly for Facies and Impedances.

Ji-Fi combines the significant benefits of simultaneous seismic inversion with depth dependent Bayesian classification to leverage additional rock physics constraints that help to produce higher quality, more consistent and geologically actionable results. Plus, now you can utilise depth domain rock property trends.
Why you should use Ji-Fi for your next inversion
No more complex low frequency models
Tighter data integration
Increased efficiency & accuracy
Improved thick & thin bed resolution
Complex geology from seismic
Improved noise reduction
Consistent rock physics during inversion & interpretation
Inclusion of regional/geological analogue information

Predict the unconventional

Ikon Science has the technologies to assist with every step of the development of an unconventional reservoir
Innovative geoscience workflows & software, combined to offer unprecedented insight into unconventional resource plays.

Sweet Spots: High grade your sweet spot selection
Unconventional reservoirs are inherently heterogeneous, so understanding this variability improves production. Sweet spots are unique to each resource play, so we apply a rigorous, customisable approach, combining local rock properties - TOC, elastic properties, & pore pressure - with geomechanical parameters to deliver an optimised prediction of rock behaviour.
  • Build powerful Rock Physics Models
  • Produce accurate geomechanical earth models
Reduce costs: Ensure borehole stability & minimise NPT
With a detailed understanding of rock strength, rock properties, and effective stresses, and how these factors interact during well operations.
  • Optimise well trajectories
  • Maximise value from Image Logs
We love all things unconventional! Did you catch us exhibiting and presenting at this year's URTec in San Antonio?   If not, click the green link to read our URTeC abstract "Uses and Abuses of the Brittleness Index With Applications to Hydraulic Stimulation".

New Study Opportunities
Atlantic Ireland Regional Study
Get access to a new & comprehensive interpretation of regional pressure and rock physics mechanisms. Success elsewhere in the Atlantic margins, such as offshore West Africa & South America, has focused interest once again on the potential of this under explored region. The Atlantic Ireland Regional Study will provide users with models to understand & predict success at a given location across the study area.

To be included in this study
  • Pressure analysis of 51 publicly released wells from the Donegal Basin, Erris Basin, Slyne Basin, Rockall Basin, Porcupine Basin and Goban Spur
  • Rock physics study over a subset of 10 wells from the Porcupine Basin
Moray Firth Fields and Fairways Regional Study
The Palaeozoic is widely considered to be the next major exploration target for the central portion of the North Sea. With an existing infrastructure to tie back to, the Palaeozoic could offer economically attractive near field opportunities. Our integrated 'rock physics with pressure study' in the Moray Firth shall characterise fields and fairways in order to predict the signature features of hydrocarbon bearing and non-hydrocarbon bearing wells.

For further information about either of our new studies please contact Karen Sherry here.

UK Onshore Carboniferous Shale Study
The Carboniferous shales of the UK onshore area have become a major interest recently due to their potential to hold exploitable natural gas. Fifteen wells from the Cleveland, Bowland and Gainsborough Trough Basins of England and the Midland Valley of Scotland were examined in order to assess the current pore pressure regime within the carboniferous shales of the UK.
