Meet the "voice" behind my listings: Q & A with Gervais Del Porto

Dear Friends,

September is upon us! Fall is my favorite time of year in the Lowcountry--days start to cool off, and the sunsets are truly spectacular. It's a time of year where creekside living is particularly magical--so what better time to feature Johns Island, one of the area's best locations for water and marsh front property? I hope you enjoy this month's news!

Welcome to JOHNS ISLAND

RURAL | Residents enjoy the natural beauty and rural setting of Johns Island. They have worked hard over the years to protect the island from being overdeveloped and its unspoiled character makes it a remarkable area in which to live.
Learn more about Angel Oak Preserve, a project of the Lowcountry Open Land Trust.

EQUESTRIAN | Mullet Hall Equestrian Center at Johns Island County Park attracts horse lovers from all over the area with its 738 acres, 20 miles of riding trails and festivals, competitive horse shows and exhibitions. A few select properties have space for owners to keep their horses.
I have fond memories of visiting Stono River Stable as a child.

PRIVATE | Despite being close to downtown Charleston and surrounding amenities, Johns Island is just far enough away to give residents as sense of country living with peaceful surroundings.
For the ultimate in privacy, check out Hoopstick Island, on the market as of last month, exclusively listed by Lyles Geer for William Means.
DINING | Take a drive on Maybank Highway and you'll discover countless options for dining - Italian, Korean, American and more. Highlights include Italian food at Wild Olive and Lowcountry cuisine with a French twist at Fat Hen. Visit Bohicket Marina & Market for a waterfront dining experience.
The Fat Hen is one of my favorites.

SHOPPING | Head to Maybank Highway for convenient shopping centers. Visit nearby Freshfields Village at Kiawah Island for one-of-a-kind boutiques and galleries.
Freshfields Village offers Johns Island locations of some of my favorite Charleston stores and businesses including GDC Home, Dolittle's, and Urban Nirvana Day Spa.

SIGHTSEEING | Hundreds of years old, the Angel Oak's massive branches create an oak tree canopy like no other. Johns Island is also home to the Charleston Tea Plantation, Irvin-House Vineyards and Firefly Distillery along with Caw Caw Interpretive Center and the Links at Stono Ferry.
As southern as sweet tea: check out the Charleston Tea Plantation

Q & A with Gervais

Tell us about your current professional endeavors?

I am the director of The Patricia McArver Public Speaking Lab at The Citadel. In the lab, I teach students how to craft a powerful message and to deliver that message with confidence. I teach public speaking to undergraduates and am the faculty advisor to a popular public speaking club (Toastmasters).

I also coach private clients through Charleston Public Speaking. I enjoy helping Lowcountry professionals improve their speaking skills. I often talk about those sessions with my Citadel students, using those stories to connect the dots, showing them how important mastering the art of public speaking is to any career.

How did you get into communications as a career?

It all actually began with Toastmasters International. When I was a college student, my mother joined the speaking club to gain the skills to help her to promote her new book. She invited me along. After the first meeting, I was hooked. I enjoyed the crafting speeches as much as I did delivering them. I thought, "If I love this so much, maybe this should be my career". I have since worked in the news business, writing and crafting stories, and then made my way into academia a few years ago.

Do you have any communications role models in the Charleston area?

I used to work at local TV stations. The high stress, long hours, and often troubling subject matter covered in the broadcasts make for a tough career.  In that regard, I admire all TV anchors. Those people, who have worked so hard to be able to sit at the desk, manage grace under fire every day. Though I didn't work with her much, I most admire Carolyn Murray of WCBD News2. We met at the now defunct Comcast C2. Despite her extremely busy days as a working mom and the face of Channel 2, Carolyn always took the time to check in with everyone in the room and made sure to thank everyone before she left. We only worked together for a couple months, so when I saw her about five years later at Earth Fare and she said, "Hi, Gervais!", I was blown away. She's professional, polished, and an expert in her field, but I most admire her for being a kind person.

In your opinion, what makes for a great visual/audio real estate marketing video?

All marketing videos should be about the emotional connection, not information.  If you tug on the heartstrings, that viewer will be motivated to hunt for the information. How do you create a video that can stir emotion? A great real estate marketing video should make you feel like you want to walk through the screen and into the property. To do this, it's important to incorporate little bits of movement and sound that would be natural in that setting.

How do you think adding a voice over helps market a property?

Voice adds a second dimension to marketing materials: you get sound as well as sight.  There are two reasons to add this other element.  First, adding a voice over can set the tone for the property, which lends distinction to the sale.  For example, a house on the water might be best suited to a calmer voice.  A younger, peppier voice would be better suited for a college loft.  Second, it gives the realtor the ability to share highlights about the property in a new way.  Some people learn best by reading.  Others learn through hearing.  This way, you can cover the bases to ensure you message have been received by all sorts of different learners.

How can people contact you if interested in communications coaching or other services?
