SUMMER READING: JUNE NEWS & HAPPENINGS
Charleston's Best Bookshops
Charleston Library Society: A Summer of Events
Real Estate for Readers: Literary Inspired Locations

Dear Friends,

Growing up, there were few things that conjured equal parts excitement and dread as the unveiling of the summer reading list for school. On one hand... so much possibility! So much agency! On the other... so many hours spent indoors that could have been spent in the sun. Nowadays, I must admit that an afternoon lounging in a hammock with a classic book sounds pretty luxurious.

In hopes that your season includes some "summer reading" as well as real estate, I bring you this month's literary-inspired newsletter. Enjoy!

Best wishes,

Where to Buy Books in Charleston
These days, between e-readers, online sellers, and chain stores, the independent bookstore seems a thing of the past. But, never fear, the Charleston area still has a few sources for books that will satisfy your desire to browse, hold, and flip pages before you buy.

Bue Bicycle Books has a tagline that says it all: Used, Rare, and Local. Blue Bicycle, located at 420 King Street, just above Marion Square, is a charming shop with a surprising inventory--it's rare that I visit without seeing something that captures my imagination or introduces me to a new title or author, many of whom are local or regional. Blue Bicycle also gives back--owner, Jonathan Sanchez, directs Poets in Schools, a program of the Lowcountry Initiative for the Literary Arts. To learn more about the store and its programs, visit http://bluebicyclebooks.com.

Among its programing and advocacy initiatives, the Preservation Society of Charleston operates one of Charleston's best book and gift shops. If you are looking for a book on Charleston--on its history, architecture, cultural heritage, or cooking--look no further than this store at 147 King Street (the corner of King and Queen Streets). In addition to the comprehensive book selection, the shop offers an array of Charleston gifts for those looking for a sophisticated and thoughtful souvenir. Vist the Preservation Society online at https://www.preservationsociety.org.

This shop is a little off the beaten path but well worth a visit on your next trip out to Edisto. Unpretentious and friendly, this is your place to find a comprehensive selection of books--whether you are looking for a casual beach read or a souvenir from your trip to the island. The Edisto Bookstore is your source for titles that tell the history and celebrate the natural beauty of Edisto and the barrier islands that make up the lowcountry. If you are staying on Edisto and want to meet some locals, be sure to check out their calendar of events including a visitors-welcome book club. For more, visit http://www.edistobookstore.com.

Summer Events at the Charleston Library Society
The Charleston Library Society serves up inspiring, engaging, and educational events throughout the year... and this summer, they are also bringing the fun!

Traditionally, Summer is a time when the events schedule dies down a bit, but this year, the Charleston Library Society is introducing The Summer Series. This calendar of relaxed events will undoubtably showcase the lighter side of the Library.

Friday, June 17th from 6:00- 9:00pm
$50 members, $60 nonmembers
Welcome to Libraritaville!  The Library Society is going to the tropics with its first ever outdoor event.  The Summer Series Kick-Off BBQ will be hosted in our parking lot behind the main building.  Live music, open bar, and good Southern BBQ will make for a memorable evening. Chris Bellamy, who sings about life on the water and the great outdoors, will provide the entertainment. Inspired by his Southern heritage, his music evokes the feel of salty marshlands, oceans and Everglades. We encourage you to wear your favorite Hawaiian shirt.

Roald Dahl Family Night
Thursday, June 30th 5:00- 7:00pm.
$15 adults, $10 child (13 and under)
With the new BFG movie coming out the first week of July, we decided to celebrate the works of Roald Dahl with a Family Movie Night.  We'll screen James and the Giant Peach, provide popcorn and peach themed snacks, and give every child a copy of a Dahl book of their choosing.  This is the perfect event for families with kids of all ages to enjoy.

Friday, July 15th 7:00- 9:00pm.
$20 members, $25 nonmembers
Grab your Bermuda shorts and visors and tie your sweaters around your shoulders because the Charleston Library Society is taking a trip to the Country Club.  The Summer Series Movie Night's theme will be Caddyshack & Cocktails.  A screening of the 1980 comedy classic Caddyshack will be enhanced by light snacks and a specialty cocktail.  Plus, we will have a putting green with $1 puts to practice your swing.

Movie Night- National Lampoon's Vacation 33rd Anniversary
Friday, July 29th 7:00- 9:00pm.
$20 members, $25 nonmembers
To celebrate the 33rd Anniversary of National Lampoon's Vacation, we will host another Movie Night with a "3-Rum Punch" as the specialty cocktail and have a raffle with $3 tickets.  Prizes will include gift memberships, tote bags and more!  Movie Night is the perfect opportunity to bring friends and introduce them to the Library Society.

Thursday, August 11th 7:00- 9:00pm
$30 members, $35 nonmembers
There are two things that everyone can love- beer and bingo! The Library Society will host the fun evening while providing a variety of beer and snacks. This is a call for a great night out. Prizes will be given to winners of the rounds.
