A highlight of my summer has been a trip to my cousins' farm in Massachusetts. The cooler weather was divine, and fresh strawberries were a bonus!
Dear friends,

If there was ever a time that you might find me anything less than positive about life in Charleston, it would be during the dog days of summer. But all it takes is an evening breeze off the harbor to raise my spirits and help me forget (temporarily) about the daytime sizzle.

The heat has done little to slow down real estate in Charleston. Buyers are still active, and well-priced homes are going quickly.

With all this activity, there hasn't been much time for summer vacation, but I'm sure I'll manage to squeeze in another overnight to Edisto before Labor Day.

Stay cool out there!

Best wishes,

Leize Gaillard

Charleston area listings with gorgeous pools

Cooling off on Legare Street
with my grandmother and cousin in 1982.

Growing up in downtown Charleston, I was always lucky enough to have access to a pool. Besides being a lot of fun and a wonderful place for friends and family to gather, it helped to beat the heat!

Here are a few of my favorite listings featuring beautiful and refreshing pools, and, below, click to view all active listings featuring pools.

Don't forget your sunscreen!

The pool at 49 South Battery is an oasis in historic downtown Charleston.

My favorite recipes for summer in the Lowcountry

Summer is a time for eating well in the Lowcountry. Squash, zucchini, tomatoes, eggplant, corn, okra, and peaches are just some of the spoils readily available at local farm stands, farmers markets, and grocery stores that stock local produce.

Here are a few of my favorite recipes, on regular rotation throughout the summer.
Crab cakes by Cooking Light.
When on the hunt for a lighter version of crab cakes, I found this recipe from Cooking Light. You'd never know they were a healthier version of this old favorite; they are delicious, with or without the sauce included in the recipe.
Grilled vegetables by Giada De Laurentiis
via www.foodnetwork.com.
This straightforward recipe is one of the best I've found for simple summer veggies on the grill. These can take a while to cook when using a charcoal grill, but the effort is worth it. Have leftovers? These are the next day on a sandwich.
Ina Garten (aka The Barefoot Contessa)'s Gazpacho via www.foodnetwork.com.
Gazpacho is one of those recipes with which I prefer to improvise, but I usually start with Ina Garten's recipe as a guide.

Lee Brothers' Pan-Roasted Corn & Okra. Image by Fredrika Stjärne, courtesy of www.FoodandWine.com
A few years ago, I stumbled upon this recipe Charleston's own Lee Brothers, and it's been one of my go-to's for summer ever since.
Grilled Peaches with lime and honey from Real Simple.
This simple dessert from Real Simple is light, easy, and delicious. The peaches are great on their own or can be served with vanilla bean ice-cream for an extra special treat.
