Early summer sunset - Edisto Island, SC

With the final Spoleto curtain closed, summer in Charleston has officially arrived! Summer around here seems to mean a little less town and a little more country (or beach). This month's newsletter focuses on some of those parts of a Lowcountry summer we all love most. Enjoy!

Day Trip: Edisto Island, SCdaytrip
Just an hour or so from downtown Charleston, Edisto is a great option for those seeking a classic Lowcountry summer day while avoiding some of the increasingly crowded spots closer to town. Here are some of my favorite stops on a day trip to Edisto.
Botany Bay Plantation
Open and free to the public since 2008, Botany Bay Plantation is SC Heritage Preserve and Wildlife Management Area with over 3,000 acres. A nature lover's paradise, Botany Bay is best known for its stretch of beach with trees that rise out of the sand and waves (bring your camera, as you will want to take some photos!). While swimming is permitted off Botany Bay beach, those looking for a "day at the beach" would be better served setting up your towel and umbrella at Edisto Beach, just a few miles past the turn off to Botany Bay.  More on Botany Bay.
King's Farm Market
If you have ever wondered where to find the best pimento cheese in the Charleston area , look no further--Kings has you covered! Seriously amazing pimento cheese aside, Kings is a favorite stop for fresh veggies, grab-and-go sandwiches, boiled peanuts, and a homemade fruit popsicle. For a souvenir of your day on Edisto, consider taking home some of Kings' jams and relishes or a bouquet of fresh cut flowers. Visit King's Farm Market on the web.
Blueberry picking
Ok, so Newton's Blueberry Farm is technically in Hollywood, not on Edisto. But the location is quite convenient for a stop on your way back to Charleston for your day trip on the Island. Newton's has been growing and harvesting blueberries for over 45 years, and--hands down--it's my favorite spot for u-pick blues. There's nothing fancy here--just a bucket and rows and rows of blueberry bushes. Call first to confirm their hours and make sure the berries are ripe for picking! For more, visit Newton's Facebook page
More affordable Charleston-area beach homesbeachhomes
Many long-time Charleston residents fondly recall the days of affordable beach homes, when the drinking water on Sullivan's Island still tasted like sulfur and Kiawah was sprinkled with wood-paneled 50's beach shacks. While those days may be long gone, many are surprised to find that beach real estate is not as far out of reach one might think. Here's a look at currently available Charleston-area single family beach homes under 600k.
Crabbing has been one of my favorite pastimes of a Lowcountry summer since I was a little girl. I am personally a fan of the old fashioned chicken-on-a-string method, though I wouldn't turn down a good catch from a crab trap.  Growing up, this family Deviled Crab recipe was our go-to for a day's catch, baking the crab mixture in large scallop shells collected on Dewees and Capers Islands. Some of you may recognize it from the original Charleston Receipts cookbook, page 82. Hint: 12 medium (or 10 large) Blue crabs = approximately 1 lb of crab meat. Enjoy!
