Sierra Pacific Synod Resource Center

April 2014

EASTER SUNDAY is now behind us, leaving the memories of  Lenten penitence, but also of festive Palm Sunday and Easter worship, music and praise.  We look ahead to busy days of another type:  confirmation, graduations, weddings, VBS, synod assembly.  In the midst of these, your Synod Resource Center is here ... ready to serve as your partner in ministry.  We are adding new resources almost daily based on our research and on your inquiries.

Might any of the following resources be helpful to you right now?

(1) Are you trying to get a website up and running?
Or experimenting with social media?
"Social Media Guide for Ministry" by Nils Smith, comes highly recommended.   Also:
"Unique: Telling Your Story in the Age of Brands and Social Media" by Phil Cook.
"Ministry in the Digital Age:  Strategies and Best Practices for a Post-Website World" by David T. Bourgeois.

(2) Trying to get the music just right for your contemporary service?
You might find some help in "Sound Sound Decisions" (evaluating contemporary music for Lutheran worship) prepared by the ELCA Division for Congregational Ministries.

(3) As you wind down Lent for another year, make a note to check out our Lenten dramas and monologues next year........several are new.
"The Cross & Our Witness" (dramas and meditations), "Voices of Repentance" (includes children's sermons), "People Who Met Jesus" (monologues/sermons), "Gathering at Golgatha" (readers' theater for Good Friday), "At the Foot of the Cross" (one person dramas), "Artisans of the Crucifixion" (monologues through the eyes of a blacksmith, a carpenter, a stone mason, a tanner, and basket maker) are some of what we have.

(4) IN RESPONSE TO YOUR REQUESTS.... We have copies of Luther's Small Catechism, pocket size, for you to use or give away.
   Yours for the asking.

(5) FOR VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL, we have Group's new material (Weird Animals  for a week-long session) and Hay Day's weekend material, Blast Off!    We also have numerous past editions.   How can we help with your VBS planning?

(6) We have several new and beautiful children's story books in Spanish.

(7)  "The Jesus Storybook Bible"
is another of our recently-purchased resources.  It is written by Sally Lloyd-Jones, a leading writer of inspirational books with special expertise in conveying Biblical truth to children.  She has written three bestselling children's Bibles and many picture storybooks.  The book is filled with beautiful, whimsical drawings by English illustrator Jago.  Sub-title of this special book is  "Every Story Whispers His Name."  It comes with a dvd so the child (or parent and child) can listen to the story being read while looking at the pictures together.  It has been suggested this book of about fifty stories be used with an adult study group, reading from this book and then moving to the scripture.  "The Bible isn't mainly about you and what you should be doing.  It's about God and what he has done."  Want to be the first to give this a try?
