Sierra Pacific Synod Resource Center

December 2013

December.  Advent.  Christmas is coming fast!

Are you wishing for more inspiration, a bit more spiritual oomph, to counteract all of the Christmas hype going on around you?   Pick something from this list and be blessed!

God Pause  Daily online devotions from Luther Seminary.  This is free.  It focuses on the texts for the following Sunday.

A very special Advent devotional called "Longing for the Advent Dawn"  also comes from Luther Seminary.   You can read it online or download it as a pdf.   Take a look.

"In the Meantime" is the title of a free daily devotional blog by Pr. David Lose which you can pick up at your convenience and get a lift.  Check it out.

Women, especially "younger" women, are always invited to connect with "Bold Cafe". It incorporates a Lutheran perspective in how faith relates to daily life.  We think you will find these writings "speak your language" as you live out your vocation as mother/spouse/employee/Christian.

Some Advent materials in the Resource Center - Call us, 559 345-2725.
"A Different Kind of Christmas" DVD with leader guide, sub-titled "Living and Giving Like Jesus." is a five-week  course meant to help participants see the traps of consumerism and the call of God to live generously to fulfill God's mission in the world.  There is also a youth study edition of this course.
Separate, but by the same name and author (Mike Slaughter), is an Advent devotional book.

Check our website for Advent/Christmas dvd's like "Scrooge,"  "Nativity:  the Art and Spirit of the Creche,"  "Charting Christmas" which explores the origins of Christmas traditions (41 minutes).

LOOKING FOR SOME ON-LINE STUDY OR MAYBE SERMON PREP?

"ENTER THE BIBLE" is kind of an expanded online commentary, only better.  This is a monthly online newsletter that could help you grow in your faith, add depth to your personal  Bible study, and show you how to more effectively engage the scriptures.  There is a monthly Bible Q&A podcast available free on iTunes.  This is called Tips & Resources.  Take a look and see if this might be for you.

Baptism of our Lord Sunday - January 12th

Make that a special day this year?  Highlight the baptismal promises so precious in our lives?
Talk with your local Thrivent financial rep or Congregational Advocate about the beautiful pewter baptismal medallions.  Cost is just $3.75 each.
Maybe this is the year to begin giving a medallion to each newly baptized person.
Present one to each person baptized last year.

The Resource Center has some good Advent reading or gift material.
"Welcome, Child of God" by Anne Ylvisiker is an ideal baptismal gift for families.
"Living the Promises of Baptism" (101 Ideas for Parents) is one.
"Go Make Disciples" (In Invitation to Baptismal Living) is another.
