Liturgy, Education & Tradition concludes Tonight

On Friday evening March 11, 2016, The Community of St. Sarkis Church observed the 5th Lenten Vesper Service of the season.

Following Church Services the St. Sarkis Youth Club gave a very informative presentation on the Life and Torture of St. Gregory the Illuminator. Pagoumain Hall was filled with friends and parents and many youth who all thoroughly enjoyed the presentation and learned a great deal as well.

Following the presentation the Youth Club families sponsored a beautiful Fellowship which was enjoyed by all.

We are always proud of our Youth for taking these initiatives a day thankful to their parents and families for their support.

The Sixth Lenten vesper service (Peace and Compline - Խաղաղական եւ Հանգստեան Ժամերգութիւններ) will be offered tonight at 6:30 PM at St. Sarkis Church. At the end of the Service, members of our community will reflect on the Meaning of Badarak.

The fellowship hour of this evening will be hosted by the PTA of Suzanne & Hovsep Hagopian Saturday School.

Consecration Of Icons Dedicated To
The Armenian Holy Martyrs Of The Genocide

In an inspiring service last Saturday at St. Illuminator Cathedral in New York, the icons commemorating the canonization of the Martyrs of April were consecrated by Archbishop Oshagan during the Divine Liturgy attended by the faithful of the metropolitan area. Priests serving the Eastern Prelacy were all in attendance and participated in this memorable event. Each parish of the Eastern Prelacy will proudly display the icon as a remembrance of the unique event that collectively canonized the Martyrs last April, in the first canonization ceremony in the Armenian Church since St. Gregory of Datev (1346-1409). Following the Liturgy and consecration the blessing of Madagh took place and distributed to those present.
Membership Meeting

Last Sunday the general membership meeting took place where members reviewed various reports, approved the budget of 2016 and elected new board members to serve our church.

Saint Sarkis Senior Boys  - Basketball Champions

A season that started with a surprise and much promise ended with a exhilarating finish: the St. Sarkis Senior Boys team won the Senior Division championship after finishing the regular season in 1st place. After a 2 year hiatus, a reborn Senior Boys team got an unexpected boost from the Dilakian twins, who expressed their desire to play in the Armenian Basketball League, and make new Armenian fiends. With their addition to the team and in need of a qualified coach, we asked Alex Nakashian, a former Saint Sarkis player with a very good knowledge of the game to coach the team, and although very willing, he was unable to actively coach this year due to an unexpected health situation. His father, Raffi Nakashian, gracefully accepted to fill in for Alex, and become a very dedicated and involved coach and mentor to the young players. It took only 1 game for the League to recognize, after their initial shock, that the new St. Sarkis Senior Boys team was a team to be reckoned with and no "easy win". Convincing wins kept coming, with the team jelling and growing more confident with every game, the only glitch coming in the 4th game of the season vs. Sts. Vartanantz, when both the coach and several players arrived late in the first half and could not make up the score deficit in the remaining time. Remaining undefeated after that, the team secured 1st place in the regular season with a convincing win over Sts. Vartanantz in the last game of the regular season, and went on to reach the Championship game by defeating a very strong and determined Holy Martyrs team. The Championship Game vs. Sts. Vartanantz was played at Christ the King High School Gym, a wonderful but very unfamiliar gym to both teams, and the 1st half low score showed it : 22-16 Sts. Vartanantz. In the 2nd half Saint Sarkis regained their composure and in the 4th quarter outscored Sts. Vartanantz 26-12 to get and expand the lead.  Final Score... 52-43 Saint Sarkis. An unforgettable and remarkable season ended in a high note, with a post game celebration at Sevan restaurant where everyone contributed their good memories and recollections from the season. As usual, the Saint Sarkis Basketball program is always looking for players and young men and ladies interested in a good, clean Armenian team sports experience should call the church office (718)-224-2275 or Basketball Program coordinator, Mr. Edward Barsamian (212)-689-6273.

Mission Statement
The Saint Sarkis Youth Mentoring Program aims at providing guidance, life lessons and a sense of direction through a network of highly qualified professionals in a variety of fields. These professionals in different fields will provide information to members of the youth club via lecture format, as well as question and answer sessions. The youth members will also have direct access to these professionals outside of this forum that will enable them more direct mentoring.

This program will help introduce our youth to different career options and to hopefully find a link with their current interests and hobbies.

THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE PHILIPPIANS (4.4-7)
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MATTHEW (20.29-21.17)
As Jesus and his disciples were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him. Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was going by, they shouted, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!"
The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!"
Jesus stopped and called them. "What do you want me to do for you?" he asked.
"Lord," they answered, "we want our sight."
Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.
As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, "Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away."
This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:
"Say to Daughter Zion,
'See, your king comes to you,
gentle and riding on a donkey,
and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.'"
The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,
"Hosanna to the Son of David!"
"Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"
   "Hosanna in the highest heaven!"
When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, "Who is this?"
The crowds answered, "This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee."
Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. "It is written," he said to them, "'My house will be called a house of prayer,' but you are making it 'a den of robbers.'"
The blind and the lame came to him at the temple, and he healed them. But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple courts, "Hosanna to the Son of David," they were indignant.
"Do you hear what these children are saying?" they asked him.
"Yes," replied Jesus, "have you never read,
"'From the lips of children and infants
you, Lord, have called forth your praise'?"
And he left them and went out of the city to Bethany, where he spent the night.
