Liturgy, Education & Tradition Starts Tonight
The first Lenten vesper service (Peace and Compline - Խաղաղական եւ Հանգստեան Ժամերգութիւններ) will be offered tonight at 6:30 PM at St. Sarkis Church.
At the end of the Service, His Grace Bishop Anoushavan Tanielian, Vicar General will speak about "The Year of Service". The fellowship hour of this evening will be hosted by the Ladies Guild of St. Sarkis Church.
Join us tonight to pray the great vespers of the Armenian Church, learn more about the tenets of our faith and savor traditional Lenten homemade foods.

Բարեկենդանի նախորդող Շաբաթ օր, Փետրուար 6, 2016 ին ժամը 11։00 ին Սուրբ Սարգիս եկեղեցւոյ, Սիւզան եւ Յովսէփ Յակոբեան շաբաթօրեայ վարժարանի աւանդոյթեան համաձայն` առաջին դասարանէն մինջեւ վեցերորդ դասարանի աշակերտները իրենց Ուսուցչական կազմով, ծնողաց յանձնախումբով ուղղուեցան դէպի Ֆլաշինկի Հայ Տունը ։
Հայ Տունի պատասխանատուները ջերմօրէն դիմաւորեցին բոլոր կազմը։ Խմբային լուսանկարէն ետքը, վարժարանիս տնօրէնուհին Տիկին Նայիրի Զոհրապեան առաջնորդեց ներկաները դէպի Հայ Տունի հիւրասենեակը ուր ՀԱՅ ՏՈՒՆԻ երեց բնակիչները նստած անհամբեր կը սպասէին աշակերտներուն։
Աշակերտները պատրաստած էին կոկիկ յայտագիր մը որ կ՚ընդգըրկէր ասմունք եւ խմբային երգեր։
Յայտագիրը սկսաւ Տէր Նարեկ Քհնյ. Թրթռեանի բացման խօսքով, անանդրադարձաւ Վարդանանցի խորհուրդին եւ փոխանցեց իր սրտի խօսքն ու բարեմաղթութիւնները �ՀԱՅ ՏՈՒՆ�ի բնակիչներուն ։
Ապա վեցերորդ կարգի աշակերտները ասմունքեցին Վարդանանց տօնի նուիրուած �ՔԱՋ ՎԱՐԴԱՆ� եւ Սիլվա Կապուտիկեանի �ԽՕՍՔ ԻՄ ՈՐԴՈՒՆ� արտասանութիւնները։
Երկրորդ հերթին վարժարանիս աշակերտներէն կազմուած երգչախումբը ղեկավարութեամբ Տիկին Զեփիւռ Արծիւեանի, դաշնամուրի ընկերակցութեամբ Տիկին Հայկուհի Մկրեանի հրամցուցին փունջ մը հայկական եկեղեցական եւ ազգային երգեր ինչպէս՝ �Հայր Մեր �,�ՍուրբԱստուած�, �Մեր Հայրենիք�,�Դպրոցական Քայլերգ�,�Հայ Ապրիք�,�Գնդակորոտաց�, �Զէյթունցիներ�, եւ �լէբո լէլէ� երգերը։
Հակառակ ցուրտ օդին, աշակերտները կրցան տաք մթնոլորտ մը ստեղծել, ուրախացնել եւ երջանկութեան սերմեր ցանել հայ Մամիկներուն եւ Պապիկներուն սրտերուն մէջ։
Բոլոր ներկաները,Հայ Տունի բնակիչները ծափողջոյններով քաջալերէցին երեխաներուն եւ շատ զգալի էր տարէցներուն արտայայտութիւնը, հրճուանքը իրենց դէմքերուն վրայ։ Բոլորին տրամադրութիւնները բարձրէին։
Յայտագրի աւարտին Վարժարանիս տնօէնուհին Տիկ. Զոհրապեան շնորհակալութիւն յայտնեց �ՀԱՅ ՏՈՒՆԻ� բնակիչներուն, տնօրէնութեան ջերմ ընդունելութեան։ Նոյնպէս Տէր Նարեկ Քհնյ. Թրթռեան շնորհակալութիւն յայտնեց վարժարանիս ծնողաց յանձնախումբին, ուսուցչական կազմին եւ աշակերտներուն իրենց համագործակցութեան։ Այցելութեան աւարտին տեղի ունեցաւ հիւրասիրութիւն Հայ Տունի մեծ ընտանիքին կողմէ։
Այս այցելութիւնը երախտագիտութեան, սիրոյ եւ յարգանքի այցելութիւն էր։
Աշակերտները վերադարձան դպրոց սրտի մեծ գոհունակութեամբարժանանալով ծերերու օրհնութեան եւ աղօթքին։ Խոստացան կրկինայցելել ՀԱՅ ՏՈՒՆԸ յաջորդ տարի եւ գեղեցիկ յայտագիրով մը ուրախացնել ՀԱՅ ՏՈՒՆԻ բնակիչները։
Վարձքը կատար բոլոր անոնք որոնք ազգային ծառայութեան ճամբով,կամ անյատական մարդասիրական միջոցներով, հոգատար կ՚ըլլան կարօտեալեւ կարիքաւոր մեր տարեցներուն։

A Bereavement Support Group
|
We are pleased to announce that St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church will offer"When Tears Are Not Enough" - A Bereavement Support Group for various types of loss, and disenfranchised grief.
The Bereavement Support Group will provide compassionate and loving assistance to bereaved parishioners for healing and finding comfort following the death of a loved one. Our group is designed for participants with similar losses such as individuals who have lost spouses, parents, children, and other loved ones.
The Bereavement Support Group will meet on Five Consecutive Mondays Starting February 8, 2016 From 7- 8PM
Please Note that the group will not meet this Monday 02/15/2016. Our next meeting is scheduled for 02/22/2016

Mentors Program For St. Sarkis Church Youth Club
|
|
The Saint Sarkis Youth Mentoring Program aims at providing guidance, life lessons and a sense of direction through a network of highly qualified professionals in a variety of fields. These professionals in different fields will provide information to members of the youth club via lecture format, as well as question and answer sessions. The youth members will also have direct access to these professionals outside of this forum that will enable them more direct mentoring.
This program will help introduce our youth to different career options and to hopefully find a link with their current interests and hobbies.

My point is this: heirs, as long as they are minors, are no better than slaves, though they are the owners of all the property; but they remain under guardians and trustees until the date set by the father. So with us; while we were minors, we were enslaved to the elemental spirits of the world. But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God
ՊՕՂՈՍ ԱՌԱՔԵԱԼԻ ՆԱՄԱԿԸ ԳԱՂԱՏԱՑԻՆԵՐՈՒՆ (4.1-7)
Բայց գիտցէ՛ք նաեւ, թէ ժառանգորդ մը թէպէտ ամբողջ ժառանգութեան իսկական տէրն է, բայց որքան ատեն որ անչափահաս է՝ տարբերութիւն չունի ծառայէ մը, քանի խնամակալներու եւ հոգաբարձուներու ենթակայ է, մինչեւ հասնի իր հօրը որոշած ժամանակակէտը: Նոյնն է մեր ալ պարագան: Որքան ատեն որ հոգեւորապէս անչափահաս էինք՝ բնութեան ոյժերուն կ՚ենթարկուէինք ու կը ծառայէինք: Բայց հիմա յարմար ժամանակը հասած համարելով, Աստուած աշխարհ ղրկեց իր Որդին, որ կնոջմէ մը ծնաւ եւ Օրէնքին տակ ապրեցաւ, որպէսզի մեզ Օրէնքին գերութենէն փրկէ եւ Աստուծոյ որդիներ դարձնէ: Արդ, որովհետեւ իր որդիներն ենք՝ Աստուած մեր սիրտերուն մէջ ղրկեց իր Որդիին Հոգին, որով զԱստուած �Աբբա�, այսինքն �Հայր� կը կոչենք: Ուստի այլեւս ծառայ չենք, այլ՝ որդի. եւ քանի որդի էք՝ Աստուծոյ խոստումը պիտի ժառանգէք:

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (2.41-52)
Now every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the festival of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up as usual for the festival. When the festival was ended and they started to return, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. Assuming that he was in the group of travelers, they went a day's journey. Then they started to look for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him, "Child, why have you treated us like this? Look, your father and I have been searching for you in great anxiety." He said to them, "Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?" But they did not understand what he said to them. Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things in her heart.
And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favor.
ՅԻՍՈՒՍ ՔՐԻՍՏՈՍԻ ԱՒԵՏԱՐԱՆ ԸՍՏ ՂՈՒԿԱՍԻ (2.41-52)
Յիսուսի ծնողները ամէն տարի Զատիկի տօնին Երուսաղէմ կ՚երթային: Երբ Յիսուս տասներկու տարեկան եղաւ, անոնք Երուսաղէմ գացին, ինչպէս տօնին սովորութիւն էր երթալ: Տօնակատարութեան աւարտին, մինչ անոնք կը վերադառնային, Յիսուս մանուկը Երուսաղէմ մնաց: Իր ծնողները չանդրադարձան ասոր: Անոնք կը կարծէին թէ ուղեկիցներուն հետ է: Օրուան մը ճամբայ կտրելէ ետք, սկսան փնտռել Յիսուսը ազգականներու եւ ծանօթներու մօտ:
Երբ չգտան, կրկին Երուսաղէմ դարձան՝ հոն փնտռելու համար զինք: Երեք օր ետք զինք գտան տաճարին մէջ: Անիկա տաճարին ուսուցիչներուն հետ նստած՝ անոնց մտիկ կ�ընէր եւ հարցումներ կ՚ուղղէր: Բոլոր անոնք որ իրեն մտիկ կ՚ընէին, կը հիանային անոր իմաստութեան եւ տուած պատասխաններուն վրայ:
Ծնողները երբ տեսան Յիսուսը, ապշած մնացին: Իր մայրը ըսաւ.- Այս ի՞նչ ըրիր մեզի, տղա՛ս. ահա հայրդ ու ես տակնուվրայ եղած՝ քեզ կը փնտռէինք:
Յիսուս ըսաւ անոնց.- Ինչո՞ւ զիս ուրիշ տեղ կը փնտռէիք. չէի՞ք գիտեր թէ հօրս տան մէջ պէտք է գտնուիմ:
Սակայն ծնողները այս խօսքերուն իմաստը չհասկցան: Յետոյ Յիսուս ծնողներուն հետ միասին Նազարէթ գնաց, եւ հնազանդ մնաց անոնց: Իր մայրը այս բոլորը իր սիրտին մէջ կը պահէր: Յիսուս կը զարգանար իմաստութեամբ եւ մարմնով՝ Աստուծոյ եւ մարդոց սիրելի ըլլալով:

Liturgical Calendar (From Crossroads)

SAINT THEODORE THE WARRIOR
This Saturday, February 12, the Armenian Church remembers Theodore the Warrior, a captain in the Roman army during the reign of Emperor Licinius. Theodore was born into a Christian family and was educated in the teachings of the faith. He was noted for his bravery and was especially noted for killing a serpent that was terrorizing people and animals. Theodore armed himself with a sword, and with a prayer to the Lord vanquished the serpent and became a heroic figure. He was appointed commander of Heraclea where he combined his military duties with the preaching of the Gospel. Soon nearly all of Heraclea had accepted Christianity. Emperor Licinius began a campaign against the Christians, and Theodore was a main target. He was arrested and given an opportunity to renounce his Christian faith, which he refused to do. He was martyred in 319 A.D. in Heraclea, Thrace.
SUNDAY OF THE EXPULSION
As of Monday we entered the period of Great Lent (Medz Bahk), and the Church has taken on a somber, mournful, and penitential manifestation. Beginning last Sunday, which was Poon Paregentan, the altar is closed with a dark curtain, symbolic of the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden (See Genesis, chapters 2 and 3).
Holy Communion is not offered during the liturgy. It is a period of repentance and reflection on our spiritual journey toward Easter. We are reminded that through prayers and fasting we strive to please God and regain Mankind's original sinless creation.

Each of the Sundays during Lent has a theme. This Sunday is the Sunday of the Expulsion (Ardagsman Giragi). The message of this day is a continuation of last Sunday's Paregentantheme, namely, Adam and Eve's fall from grace and banishment from Paradise. The hymns sung on the first two Sundays of Lent remind us of the expulsion and give sinners the opportunity to be worthy through repentance.
O Lord, you first gave the holy observance of the law in paradise. But the first creatures disobeyed you by eating the forbidden fruit and thus tasted the bitterness of sin and death. Therefore, enable us to taste the sweetness of your commandments. (From the hymn sung on the Sunday of the Expulsion)

FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD (DYARNUNTARACH)
On Sunday, February 14, the Armenian Church commemorates the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord to the Temple (Dyarnuntarch in Armenian, which literally means "bringing forward of the Lord"). This feast always falls on February14-forty days after the Nativity (January 6). Forty days after the birth of Christ, Mary and Joseph obeyed Mosaic Law and presented their son to the temple (Numbers 18:15). In the temple, a righteous and devout man named Simeon to whom it was revealed that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord, took Jesus in his arms, blessed God and said, "Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel." (See Luke 2:22-40)
Some pre-Christian Armenian customs have been incorporated into this feast, including one that remains popular to this day, especially in the Middle East and Armenia. In recent years the tradition has been revived here in the United States. On the eve of the feast, a bonfire is lit outside of the church using a flame from the altar. Young people, especially newlyweds, gather around the fire as the flames subside, the young men leap over the flames. The light of the bonfire is symbolic of Christ, who is the Everlasting Life of the world.
This year this feast falls on a Sunday during Lent when the altar curtain is kept closed. On this occasion in celebration of the Presentation of the Lord, the curtain will be open during the Liturgy.
