Photos From Last Week's Movie Night
Suzanne and Hovsep Hagopian Saturday School PTA, hosted a Family Movie Night last Sunday evening, January 17th at 7:00 pm.  Children arrived with their sleeping bags and blankets and enjoyed snacks and refreshments, while watching "The Peanuts Movie".  The Main Hall was filled with happy and excited children who greatly enjoyed the movie and played together. Parents also enjoyed talking with each other and had some refreshments.  A great big thank you to all who stayed to help clean up afterwards.
Basketball News

The power of prayer and preparation can never be underestimated as shown by the January 17 double win against St. Thomas.

The Girls team, although missing several strong players due to injuries and other commitments, have made adjustments, and played a tenacious defense and a balanced scoring on offense.

Juliet Hagopian, Talar Hovsepian, Tonya Orangian, Arev Ebrimian, Nicole Mark and Margaret Sakar were among the scorers. Alicia Mordjikian, Nicole Issagolian and Ani Makarian also made contributions.

Juliet Hagopian and Nicole mark anchored the defense and rebounded well at both ends of the court, and ball movement on offense was smoother and more effective.  It was a good win and we could see it in their eyes...
They future games, and maybe...... maybe.... PLAYOFFS this year.   The power of prayer and preparation can never be underestimated.

The Saint Sarkis Senior Boys improved their record to 7 wins 1 loss with 2 games left in the regular season, and potential showdown with last year's champs, Sts. Vartanantz in the last game for 1st place honors.

Once again lead by the Dilakian wins and captain Chris Avakyan, the team built a quick lead, and improved on it in the last quarter, wining 65-50.  "LET'S GO TO WORK"  was the huddle slogan as they raised their tempo in the 4th quarter of the game.

The next games for both teams will take place at the Flushing YMCA on January 31, starting at 2:00 pm.

Mentors Program For St. Sarkis Church Youth Club

Mission Statement
The Saint Sarkis Youth Mentoring Program aims at providing guidance, life lessons and a sense of direction through a network of highly qualified professionals in a variety of fields. These professionals in different fields will provide information to members of the youth club via lecture format, as well as question and answer sessions. The youth members will also have direct access to these professionals outside of this forum that will enable them more direct mentoring.

This program will help introduce our youth to different career options and to hopefully find a link with their current interests and hobbies.

"Research indicates that students who are successful academically; in addition to support from parents and teachers, usually have sustained access to other knowledgeable and caring adults." (Clark 1989)

THE SECOND EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO TIMOTHY (2:15-26)
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved by him, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly explaining the word of truth. Avoid profane chatter, for it will lead people into more and more impiety, and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have swerved from the truth by claiming that the resurrection has already taken place. They are upsetting the faith of some. But God's firm foundation stands, bearing this inscription: "The Lord knows those who are his," and, "Let everyone who calls on the name of the Lord turn away from wickedness."

In a large house there are utensils not only of gold and silver but also of wood and clay, some for special use, some for ordinary. All who cleanse themselves of the things I have mentioned will become special utensils, dedicated and useful to the owner of the house, ready for every good work. Shun youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. Have nothing to do with stupid and senseless controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but kindly to everyone, an apt teacher, patient, correcting opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant that they will repent and come to know the truth, and that they may escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO JOHN (6.15-21)
When Jesus realized that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain by himself.
When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were terrified. But he said to them, "It is I; do not be afraid."  Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the land toward which they were going.

Last Week's Sermon
Nothing can replace the experience of attending church on Sundays and being part of the Divine Liturgy celebration. However, you can listen to the sermon that was delivered at St. Sarkis Church last Sunday.

THE PROPHET JONAH
On the fifth day of the fast of the Catechumens, which is tomorrow
, Friday, January 22, the Armenian Church commemorates the Prophet Jonah (Hovnan), one of the twelve Minor Prophets. The Minor Prophets are not considered less important that those called Major Prophets, but their books in the Bible are shorter. All of the Minor Prophets were servants of God who proclaimed His will to people in need of repentance.

The story of Jonah and the whale is one of the better-known stories in the Old Testament. Jonah's feast falls on the last day of the Fast of the Catechumens. Just as the people of Nineveh fasted and repented from their wicked ways, so too do the people of God during this preliminary fast before Great Lent (Medz Bahk), the most penitential season of the year.
ST. SARKIS THE WARRIOR
This Saturday, January 23, the Armenian Church commemorates the life of St. Sarkis the Warrior, his son Mardiros, and 14 faithful soldiers. This is a moveable feast that can occur between January 11 and February 15. It follows the Fast of the Catechumens. Although the fast is not connected to the feast of St. Sarkis, it has come to be associated with this saint, even often incorrectly referred to as the "Fast of St. Sarkis."

Sarkis lived during the fourth century in Cappadocia. He rose through the military ranks because of his valiant campaign on behalf of the Emperor Constantine. With the accession of Emperor Julian, Sarkis took refuge in Armenia with his son. Later they joined the Persian army to fight Julian. Father and son fought with exceptional bravery. The Persian leader, Shapur II, tried to convince them to abandon their Christian faith and embrace Zoroastrianism. Both refused, and they were martyred. Fourteen loyal Christian soldiers who went to claim the bodies were also martyred. Eventually, other Christians successfully retrieved the remains and sent them to Assyria, where they remained until the fifth century when Mesrob Mashdots had the remains transferred to the city of Karpi in Vaspurakan, Armenia. A monastery was built over the site of the graves.

ST. ADOM AND ST. SOUKIAS
The armies of Armenian soldiers were led by Adom Knooni and Manajihr Rshdooni in the fifth century, before the battle of Avarayr. They were ordered by their Persian commanders to leave Armenia and proceed to one of the most distant outposts of the empire for the purpose of keeping the Armenian soldiers far away from Armenia and thus prevent them from defending the Armenians. The commanders recognized the Persian plot and returned to Armenia with their armies. They were pursued, captured and martyred by the Persian forces. The Holy Sookiasians were members of the Royal Court who were converted and baptized by the Voskyan priests. They lived in isolation at Mount Sougaved. When they refused to return to court and worship the pagan gods, they were martyred. This year Sts. Adom and his soldiers are remembered on Monday, January 25, and the Sts. Sookias and Martyrs are remembered on Tuesday, January 26.
