Fall Festival at St. Sarkis Church
St. Sarkis Church, Suzanne and Hovsep Hagopian Saturday School PTA held its annual Fall Festival Celebration on Saturday, October 31th. The Chadrijian Hall was beautifully decorated and filled with excited children and parents. Our beautiful children came in costume and participated in the many fun activities organized for them. They enjoyed painting pumpkins, decorating cupcakes and other arts and crafts. DJ Armen entertained all of our guests with wonderful music and the children danced the afternoon away. We look forward to many more happy and fun occasions at St. Sarkis!

Armenia Day Reported by: Talar Ardzivian

On Friday October 30, 2015, the Philosophy department of Manhattanville College, in Purchase, NY, held an event; Armenia Day, A Conference Commemorating the Armenian Genocide on its Centennial, Celebrating Armenian Valiance.  Start of the program, greetings were made from Dr. Lisa Dolling, Professor of Philosophy at the college, along with dean of the college and arts and sciences of the college and the President of Manhattanville's Philosophy Club.  There were also keynote guest speakers, His Grace Bishop Anoushavan Tanielian, who spoke about Armenia itself and other guest speakers, some who were professors of the college, discussed ancient Armenia and the effects of Genocide.

In the summer of 2015, student Molly O'Lena, class of 2015, piloted the Philosophy Department Summer Internship Program. She went to Armenia and taught English to young Armenian Orphans at the Diramayr Hayastani Ketron at Tashir. For two months, she taught hundreds of children English.  Next year, summer of 2016, Molly will return to Armenia with 9 more members of the Philosophy Club and Department.  Five members will go to Tashir and the other five will go to Shushi. There they will teach English, plant beans and learn. To support and help these members on their journey to Armenia, a silent auction was held throughout the event, as well as many donations from the attendees for the trip, one of which donated a round trip ticket to Armenia.

All of the attendees walked over to the Chapel of the college, holding a lit candle. Led by His Grace Bishop Anoushavan Tanielian, and members from St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church Choir performed three songs; Տեր Ողորմեա (Der Voghormya), Սուրբ Սուրբ (Sourp, Sourp) and Հայր Մեր (Hayr Mer). The beautiful acoustic sounds touched everyone's hearts & was a moment that no one will ever forget. The Antranig Dance Ensemble performed a couple of Armenian dances, from modern Armenian songs to contemporary.

At the end of the program a reception was held with delicious homemade Armenian food with some live background Armenian music.  We thank Dr. Siobhan Nash-Marshall and the department of Philosophy of Manhattanville College for organizing such a successful event commemorating the 100 years of the Armenian Genocide.

Saint Sarkis Basketball News - Reported by: Edward Barsamian

All 3 Saint Sarkis basketball teams saw action during the 1st 2 weeks of the Armenian Churches Sports Association season.

The Senior Boys team, ages 15-18, led by the Dilakian twins and Chris Avakyan surprised a very strong Holy Martyrs team and won a well played, exciting game. Makar Makarian was the high scorer with 23 points, sharp shooting from everywhere. Armand Baclagian and Artiom Hakobyan contributed as well. Andre Asarian was not able to attend but will be an effective and contributing member of the team.

The Senior Boys team is still short of  players and can still add 2 more qualified boys.  IF INTERESTED, PLEASE CALL Edward Barsamian at 212-689-6273 or the Church office. 718-224-2275.

The Saint Sarkis Girls team in its 2nd season won their season opener against St. Leon 2 team. Lead by Alexandra Kasparian and Mimi Bijimenian on defense and offense, and contributions from Isabel Hakobyan and Tony Orangian on offense, the team will provide much excitement to all its supporters.

Those interested in free thrills, can see the games schedule posted in the Pagoumian Hall and Chadrjian Hall bulletin boards.

THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE EPHESIANS (5.15-33)
Be very careful, then, how you live-not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church- for we are members of his body. "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." This is a profound mystery-but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (8.49-57)
While he was still speaking, someone came from the leader's house to say, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the teacher any longer."
When Jesus heard this, he replied, "Do not fear, Only believe, and she will be saved."
When he came to the house, he did not allow anyone to enter with him, except Peter, John, and James, and the child's father and mother. They were all weeping and wailing for her, but he said, "Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping." And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But he took her by the hand and called out, "Child, get up." Her spirit returned, and she got up at once. Then he directed them to give her something to eat. Her parents were astounded; but he ordered them to tell no one what had happened.

Liturgical Calendar (From Crossroads: E-Newsletter of the Armenian Prelacy)
ARCHANGELS MICHAEL AND GABRIEL
This Saturday, November 7, the Armenian Church commemorates the Archangels Michael and Gabriel. The word "angel" (hreshdag) means messenger. Archangel is a title given to an angel of high rank in the celestial hierarchy.

Michael (Hebrew meaning "Who is like God") is the prince of all angels and the leader of the celestial armies. He is considered to be the protector of Christians in general and soldiers in particular, and the guardian of the orthodox faith and defender against heresies.

Gabriel (Hebrew meaning "Strength of God") is one of God's chief messengers. He was God's messenger to Daniel to explain his vision (Dan. 8:16-26) and prophecy (Dan. 9:21-27). He foretold the birth of John the Baptist and was the messenger announcing the forthcoming birth of Christ (Luke 1:11-21).

"Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it." (Hebrews 13:2)

You who see the unseen One who reveal to mankind the depths of God's mysteries, you came down with the Only-Begotten to serve his economy at his birth you were announcers to the Shepherds and to the myrrh-bearing women; you were proclaimers of the Good News of the life of the risen one; we beseech you, be our intercessor before the Lord for the purification of our sins.

Guardians of the world, the Lord's guardians of those who fear God, friends of the human race, mediators between death and resurrection, great Michael and Gabriel who stand before the all-Holy Trinity; we beseech you, be our intercessor before the Lord for the purification of our sins.
(Canon to the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel and all the Heavenly Powers, from the Liturgical Canons of the Armenian Church).
