Divine Liturgy This Sunday Reported by: Dr. Louiza Kubikian
|
Sunday October 20, 2015, St. Sarkis Church and parish, under the auspices of His Eminence Archbishop Oshagan, celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the passing of its major benefactor, Mrs. Suzanne Hagopian, also remembering and honoring her husband, Mr. Hovsep Hagopian.
Srpazan Anoushavan Tanielian celebrated the Divine Liturgy and delivered the sermon and Saturday School children and teachers paid their respects for Mr. & Mrs. Hagopian participating in the requiem service by holding candles in their memories.
The event was planned and organized by the ladies of the Board of Trustees: Mrs. Amy Gostanian, Dr. Louiza Kubikian, Mrs. Nayda Voskerijian, Mrs. Alina Kochoumian and Mrs. Sonya Nenejian with additional help from Mrs. Anita Masoian and Mrs. Natalie Meneshian from the Saturday School.
It began with modest reservations, but expanded to unexpected numbers of attendees due to the enthusiasm and participation of the Saturday School children and their parents. The organizers graciously tried to accommodate all those who wanted to pay their respects to Mrs. Suzanne Hagopian.
The program included speeches by Dr. Aram Cazazian, Mr. Karekin Arzoumanian, Esq., Mrs. Annette Givelekian followed by a beautiful performance by the Saturday School students of songs and recitations. The program concluded with speeches by Der Nareg Terterian, Bishop Anoushavan Tanielian and Archbishop Oshagan who delivered a heart warming tribute to the benefactors. A small booklet was also prepared by Dr. Louiza Kubikian commemorating the life of Mr. & Mrs. Suzanne and Hovsep Hagopian.
This was a celebration of a beautiful life of service befitting Mrs. Suzanne's personality, character and style. We are forever grateful to their dedicated service and philanthropy.

Youth Club Meeting Last Saturday Reported by: Nevair Oranjian
|
The St. Sarkis Church Youth Club gathered for their monthly meeting on October 23, 2015. The topic of discussion for that night was the Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector (Luke 18:9-14). Der Hayr and all 24 participants read the parable together then discussed the meaning of the parable, and interpreted the behavior of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector. Attendees were able to describe some reasons why each person behaved the way they did, as well as discuss how the actions of the pharisee and the tax collector would be seen in today's society. After learning that the tax collector's actions were a sign of humility, all attendees spoke of a time in their lives in which they were humbled. The group also answered some questions that would ultimately determine if they behave more like the pharisee or more like the tax collector. All in all, the Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector sparked an interesting conversion among the group and helped the youth learn more about themselves. At the end of the evening, the Youth Club celebrated member Arev Ebrimian's birthday with refreshments.

THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE EPHESIANS (1.1-14)
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints in Ephesus, the faithful in Christ Jesus: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will- to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment-to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ.
In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession-to the praise of his glory.
THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (8:17-21)
For nothing is hidden that will not be disclosed, nor is anything secret secret that will not become known and come to light. Then pay attention to how you listen, for to those who have, more will be given, and from those who do not have, even what they seem to have will be taken away."
Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. And he was told, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you." But he said to them, "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it."

On October 30, the Armenian Church commemorated and remembered St. John Chrysostom (Hovhan Voskeperan), a notable Christian bishop and preacher in Syria and Constantinople. He is famous for his eloquence-Chrysostom means "golden mouth." The Orthodox Church honors him as a saint and one of the "three holy hierarchs" (along with Basil the Great and Gregory the Theologian). He is also recognized and honored by the Catholic Church and the Church of England.
John converted to Christianity in 368 when he was barely 21 years old. He renounced a large inheritance and promising legal career and went to live in a mountain cave where he studied the Bible. He was later ordained a priest and soon his sermons were attracting huge audiences. He challenged wealthy Christians, whose generosity was confined to donating precious objects for display in churches. "The gift of a chalice may be extravagant in its generosity," he said, "but a gift to the poor is an expression of love."
His outspoken criticism was not appreciated by the hierarchy and he was sent into exile at various times. He had a profound influence on the doctrines and theology of the Armenian Church because he spent the final years of his exile in Armenia. Some of his important works have survived only in Armenian manuscripts.
Muse of the deep and ineffable Divine Mysteries. Wise Prefect and Great Doctor of the world, Like the rock of the Church, you were faithful to the key to heaven. From the beloved disciple, you received the gospel. From the Holy Virgin Birthgiver you received your symbol of authority. O Patriarch John, by the grace of the Holy Spirit you received wisdom. (An Armenian Church ode dedicated to St. John Chrysostom)
