His Holiness Aram I Visits St. Sarkis Church
Reported by Mrs. Seta Megherian - Photos By Mr. Raffi Nenejian

St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church of Douglaston, New York happily and with much excitement greeted His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia during his Pontifical Visit of the Eastern Prelacy of the United States. His much anticipated visit to our Church was on Tuesday, May 19th.  Alongside His Holiness were His Eminence Archbishop Oshagan, Prelate and His Grace Bishop Anoushavan, Vicar General, Rev. Father Housig Mardirossian; Director of Ecumenical Relations of the Armenian Catholocosate, Rev. Father Abraham Malkhassian, Pastor of Holy Martyrs Armenian Church of Bayside, NY, Rev. Father Hovnan Bozoian, Pastor of Sts. Vartanats Armenian Church of Ridgefield, New Jersey, Rev. Father Gabriel Edde of the Syrian Orthodox Church of Hicksville, NY, and Rev. Dr. Linden DeBie, Pastor of Community Church of Douglaston.

His Holiness was greeted by Rev. Father Nareg Terterian, Pastor of St. Sarkis Church along with members of the Board of Trustees.  Vehapar performed the Blessing of Bread and Salt.  A beautiful procession awaited the arrival of His Holiness where he was led into the Sanctuary by a Procession which included Deacons, Sub Deacons Choir members, Yeraz Dance Group Members, dressed in traditional Armenian Folk Costumes and the Homenetmen Scouts.

Upon entering the Sanctuary, with the sound of the ringing Church bells in His honor, His Holiness was welcomed by hundreds of Faithful Parishioners. A brief Hrashapar Service was officiated, followed by welcoming remarks from His Eminence, Archbishop Oshagan, who invited His Holiness to convey His message to the people.  His Holiness's message on this occasion focused on service-"Service to God. Service to our church. Service to our people." His Holiness gave clear examples of how our Lord Jesus Christ served throughout His life. "He served the sick and the poor and taught His disciples to go to the end of their earthly lives and spread faith, hope, and love. This is the mission of our Church," His Holiness said.  "Our honor, our pride and our strength are in service. He gave clear examples of our Lord Jesus Christ, serving throughout His life, "He served the sick and the poor and taught His disciples to go to the end of their earthly life and spread Faith, Hope and Love. This is the mission of our Church".

The Catholicos presented a handheld cross to Rev. Fr. Nareg in recognition of his recent successful completion of graduate studies at St. John University where he earned a second Master's degree - a Master of Science in Education in Mental Health Counseling.

Following the Hrashapar Service the Parishioners came forward to receive the Blessing of His Holiness.  Parishioners were then invited to a lovely and well organized reception in honor of His Holiness.  Members of Suzanne and Hovsep Hagopian Saturday School as well as members of the St. Sarkis Youth Club sang the Pontifical song and Giligia.

Father Nareg offered his welcoming remarks to His Holiness and the Faithful parishioners at which time he took the opportunity to engage His Holiness in a brief yet informative Question and Answer session.  The topics discussed were the lawsuit filed by His Holiness for the reparation of lands, the ongoing and dire situation in Syria and concluded with the Mission of the Armenian Catholicosade. In conclusion, Father Nareg opened the floor for donations to support the Armenian Theological Seminary of Antilias.  In a short time $43,000 was raised for the Seminary.

We genuinely thank His Holiness, Aram I, for visiting our church and offering his blessings to our community.  This seamless evening was organized in a flawless manner by the hard working Board of Trustees and the ongoing visions of Father Nareg.  We graciously thank the Ladies Guild Members, the Ushers, the Altar servers and choir members and all those who helped make this evening possible through their generous donations as well as their time and efforts.

Dialogue With The Youth
Reported by Ms. Deborah Agopian

On Saturday, May 16th, St. Illuminator's Armenian Apostolic Cathedral hosted a "Dialogue with Vehapar," giving the Armenian youth an opportunity to hear and learn from  Vehapar as he addressed their questions.

Prior to the Q&A, Surpazan Anoushvan Tanielian, Knar Mesrobian and Naz Markarian offered their  reflections on the genocide, thoughts on sainthood and the canonization of the martyrs. The reoccurring themes were that faith has always been the root of Armenian culture making the church the epicenter of our communities, that the youth play an integral role in preserving the Armenian Church and that family is a "sacred institution." These were Vehapar's key messages, as well as reminding us that "We should never isolate ourselves in the society we live in. We must become an integral part of it and still preserve our Armenian identity." Further, Vehapar challenged the audience to think of ways to accomplish this, stressing again that we should integrate rather than assimilate into society.

Overall, the event was very inspiring. The way Vehapar delivered his message was at times formal, yet he easily became informal creating a comfortable environment for dialogue. I'm very glad to have had the opportunity to listen to Vehapar's insight. It reminded me of my responsibility as an Armenian to preserve and protect our culture through the church.

Book Of Acts (2.1-20)

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked: "Aren't all these who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome  (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs-we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!" Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?"
Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine."

Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning! No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
"'In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
    and they will prophesy.
I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
The sun will be turned to darkness
    and the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO JOHN (12.12-23)

"All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

"You heard me say, 'I am going away and I am coming back to you.' If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold on me, but the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me.
"Come now; let us leave.

Liturgical Calendar (From Crossroads: E-Newsletter of the Armenian Prelacy)
FEAST OF PENTECOST: The Descent of the Holy Spirit
This Sunday, May 24, the Armenian Church celebrates the Feast of Pentecost (Hokekaloust), the descent of the Holy Spirit to the Apostles, and the birth of the church. Jesus had commanded his apostles to "Go therefore to all nations and make them my disciples," (Matthew 28:19). Recognizing the difficulty of this great responsibility, Christ had advised his disciples not to begin their teaching mission until after the "descent of the Holy Spirit."

In the Acts of the Apostles, we read that on the day of Pentecost the apostles gathered in one place, and suddenly a strong wind seemed to fill the house in which they were assembled, and they were filled with the Holy Spirit (see reading above). It was the Jewish feast of Pentecost (Shabuoth) commemorating the giving of the law on Mount Sinai and many people from different lands had come to Jerusalem. They marveled that they could understand the Apostles' words. This day when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles marked the beginning of the mission of the Church to spread the Good News throughout the world.

In a sense Pentecost is the opposite of what occurred in the Old Testament story of the Tower of Babel when God disapproved of the building of a tower to reach the heavens and he created confusion by having the workers suddenly speak in different tongues, and unable to understand each other. At Pentecost he gave the disciples the ability to speak other tongues and thus be able to be understood by everyone everywhere.

Life-creating God, Spirit and lover of mankind, with tongues of fire you enlightened those united with one accord in love; therefore we also celebrate today your holy descent.

Filled with joy by your coming the holy apostles began in different-sounding tongues to call into unity them that had been divided from each other; therefore we also celebrate today your holy descent.

By spiritual and holy baptism through them you have adorned the universe in a new and radiant garment; therefore we also celebrate your holy descent.
(From the Canon for the First Day of Pentecost according to the Liturgical Canons of the Armenian Church)
