APRIL 26, 2015 PROGRAM

Genocide Commemoration at The Kupferberg Holocaust Resource Center

On April 23, The Kupferberg Holocaust Resource Center and Archives at Queensborough Community College hosted a program entitled "How Do We Remember? The Armenian Genocide 100 Years Later."  The program was co-sponsored by the Near East Foundation and the Armenian Genocide Centennial Committee - Eastern Region.  Dr. Dan Leshem, Director of the Kupferberg Center, welcomed the guests and introduced Fr. Nareg Terterian who delivered the opening prayer.  Brief speeches were given by Diane B. Call, President of Queensborough Community College, Hon. David Weprin, NY Assembly District 24, and New York City Councilman Paul Vallone, all of whom touched on the importance of commemorating all genocides.

Dr. Leshem discussed the importance of preserving genocide survivor testimonies.  Specifically, he mentioned that the USC Shoah Foundation, where he was previously the Associate Director for Research, integrated 400 Armenian Genocide testimonies filmed by J. Michael Hagopian and the Armenian Film Foundation into its Visual History Archive.  The USC Shoah Foundation has been releasing one clip from the Armenian Genocide collection on the Institute's website each day from April 1-30, and Dr. Leshem played an excerpt from one survivor, Alice Shipley.  Dr. Leshem then introduced Honore Gatera, a Rwandan genocide survivor and Director of the Kigali Genocide Memorial.  Mr. Gatera spoke of how the genocide impacted his life.  His birthday is on April 20, one day before the Rwandan genocide began 21 years ago.  In order to honor the victims of the genocide, he decided to change his birthday to December.  He also discussed the work of the genocide memorial in preserving the testimonies of survivors and promoting reconciliation.  Lastly, Molly Sullivan, Director & Curator of the Near East Relief Historical Society, explained the origins of the Near East Relief, namely as an urgent response to the Armenian genocide, ultimately pioneering American philanthropy overseas.  Ms. Sullivan stressed that everyone can make a difference and referred to the relief workers who rescued Armenian orphans from certain death and nurtured them so they could survive and thrive.  She discussed the arduous task of culling through archival materials to assemble the Near East Relief Online Museum, which launches on April 24 (http://neareastmuseum.com) and will detail the Near East Relief's groundbreaking humanitarian work in response to the Armenian Genocide.  A short q&a followed.  The program ended with a short speech and prayer by Fr. Abraham Malkhasyan, Pastor of The Armenian Church of the Holy Martyrs.

AYF Presentation

Last Saturday Ms. Maria Nercessian gave a presentation to the students of the Susanne and Hovsep Hagopian Saturday School about the Armenian Genocide. The presentation was based on the centennial of the Armenian Genocide and consisted of a power point presentation, posters which showed and explained a few of our lost churches, and many questions being asked by the younger portion of the students who did not know much about the genocide.

THE FIRST EPISTLE OF ST. JOHN THE APOSTLE (1.1-10)

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched-this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our joy complete.
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO JOHN (7.14-19)

Not until halfway through the Feast did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach. The Jews were amazed and asked, "How did this man get such learning without having studied?"

Jesus answered, "My teaching is not my own. It comes from him who sent me. If anyone chooses to do God's will, he will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. He who speaks on his own does so to gain honor for himself, but he who works for the honor of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him. Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?"

Apparition of the Cross
This Sunday, May 3, the Armenian Church commemorates the Feast of the Apparition of the Cross (Yerevoumun Sourp Khatchi). The Apparition of the Holy Cross is the first feast dedicated to the Holy Cross in the Armenian liturgical calendar. It is celebrated in remembrance of the appearance of the sign of the cross over the city of Jerusalem in 351 that remained in the sky for several hours. The apparition extended from Golgotha to the Mount of Olives (about two miles), and was brighter than the sun and was seen by everyone in Jerusalem. The Patriarch of Jerusalem, Cyril, used this occasion to remind Emperor Constantius of Byzantium of his father's (Constantine the Great) orthodox faith. Cyril said the Apparition was further reason to return to orthodoxy.
Traditionally, the Armenian translation of Cyril's message is read on this feast day during the Antastan prior to the Gospel lection. This event is celebrated by the Armenian and Greek churches. The Greeks observe it on the fixed date of May 7, while the Armenian date is moveable depending on the date of Easter. It is celebrated on the fifth Sunday of Easter, which is the fourth Sunday after Easter.
Cyril is a revered Doctor of the Church and he is remembered in the Armenian Church's liturgical calendar.

Here is a short excerpt from Cyril's letter about the apparition:
"In those holy days of the Easter season, on 7 May at about the third hour, a huge cross made of light appeared in the sky above holy Golgotha extending as far as the holy Mount of Olives. It was not revealed to one or two people alone, but it appeared unmistakably to everyone in the city. It was not as if one might conclude that one had suffered a momentary optical illusion; it was visible to the human eye above the earth for several hours. The flashes it emitted outshone the rays of the sun, which would have outshone and obscured it themselves if it had not presented the watchers with a more powerful illumination than the sun. It prompted the whole populace at once to run together into the holy church, overcome both with fear and joy at the divine vision. Young and old, men and women of every age, even young girls confined to their rooms at home, natives and foreigners, Christians and pagans visiting from abroad, all together as if with a single voice raised a hymn of praise to God's Only-Begotten Son the wonder-worker. They had the evidence of their own senses that the holy faith of Christians is not based on the persuasive arguments of philosophy but on the revelation of the Spirit and power; it is not proclaimed by mere human beings but testified from heaven by God Himself."
