Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday At St. Sarkis Church

The events of the Holy Week were marked solemnly at St. Sarkis Church, according to the rites of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Good Friday services were observed in front of the symbolic tomb of Jesus, which was decorated by flowers donated by our parishioners.

On Holy Saturday Morning, the students of St. Sarkis Church Hovsep and Suzanne Hagopian Saturday School received the Holy Communion. Following the service, the PTA hosted the Annual Easter Communion Breakfast.

Services on Saturday evening were presided over by His Eminence Archbishop Oshagan Choloyan, Prelate. Students of St. Sarkis Church Hovsep and Suzanne Hagopian Saturday School read Easter Vigil Scriptures.

Easter Eve Mass was celebrated and was followed by the annual Easter Eve Dinner which is traditionally prepared and donated by Ara Artinian, Mr. & Mrs. Alain and Mayda Artinian and Mr. & Mrs. Vahan & Christine Bedrossian in the memory of their beloved wife and mother Arpine Artinian.

On Easter Sunday a large number of parishioners attended the Divine Liturgy, which was celebrated by Bishop Anoushavan Tanielian, Vicar General.

THE EPISTLE OF ST. JAMES THE APOSTLE (5.1-11)

Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check.
When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO JOHN (1.1-17)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.
There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God- children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' " From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

Liturgical Calendar (From Crossroads: E-Newsletter of the Armenian Prelacy)

New Sunday:

This Sunday, April 12, is New Sunday (Nor Kiraki). Easter Sunday is followed by a period of fifty days (Hinoonk) during which there are no fasting days or saints days. This period from the Resurrection to Pentecost (Hogegaloost) is dedicated to the glorification of the Resurrection. Each of the seven Sundays of Hinoonk has a special name.
This Sunday, the first Sunday after Easter, is called New Sunday, since the first day of the week through Christ's Resurrection became consecrated and Sunday became a dominical day. It is also called Second Easter (Grgazadiz), which literally means "Easter repeated," because it is the eighth day of Easter and a day similar to Easter.
Today, you new peoples, with the heavenly and radiant angels let us sing to the renewer of the human race who died and arose for us, saying: May your resurrection be glorified.
Today, sons of Sion, born sons of God by grace in the font for the renewal for the tomb, saying: May your resurrection be glorified.
Children of faith, celebrating today the feast of Jerusalem on high, renew the garment of your souls and with the sons of light of the new Sion bless Christ the King, saying: May your resurrection be glorified. (Prayer for New Sunday from the Liturgical Canons of the Armenian Church).
