Palm Sunday and Holy Week At St. Sarkis Church

A large number of parishioners attended the Palm Sunday celebrations at St. Sarkis Church. Fr. Nareg Terterian, Pastor of St. Sarkis Church, celebrated the Divine Liturgy and gave a sermon which was followed by the service of "Trunpatzek" (Opening of the portal ceremony) and Palm Sunday procession.

Church services for the Holy Week started on Tuesday March 30th, 2015 with the Traditional Evening Service of the Ten Bridesmaids, a reenactment of the parable told by Jesus in Mathew 25:14-30. Students from St. Sarkis Church Saturday School participated to the service which was followed by a short homily by Bishop Anoushavan Tanielian, Vicar General.

On Thursday Evening, the Liturgy of the Holy Eucharist was followed by the service of "Washing of the Feet" , which is a direct observance of the Lord's command (John 13: 1-17) and a sign humbleness. Fr. Nareg washed the feet of the church servers and anointed them with oil.

The service of washing of feet was followed by Tenebrae, a distinctive ceremony of gradual extinguishing of candles while a series of readings and psalms and hymns are chanted. Fr. Nareg gave a sermon concentrating on John 13:34-35 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.  By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
Liturgy, Tradition and Education Series Was Concluded Last Friday

On Friday evening of March 27th, 2015, The Community of St. Sarkis Church observed the last Lenten Vesper Service of the season.

Following this weeks Vesper Service, eight members of the Young Adult community of St. Sarkis church discussed their reflections on the Centennial Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide and how it has affected their families and lives.

Heartfelt and touching presentations were given by  Nyeree Demirdjian, Simon Bardizbanian, Lara Milian, Diana Cava, Michael Gostanian, Tamar Haroutunian and Seta Megherian. The Moderator of the evening Veh Bezdikian introduced all the speakers as well as discussed his personal reflection on the Genocide.
The stories of our tragic past must be told and heard so that history does not repeat!

THE FIRST EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE CORINTHIANS (15.1-11)

Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.

For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.

For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them-yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. Whether, then, it was I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MARK (16.1-8)

When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus' body. Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, "Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?"
But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away.As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.
"Don't be alarmed," he said. "You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter, 'He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.' "

Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.

Liturgical Calendar (From Crossroads: E-Newsletter of the Armenian Prelacy)

Easter

Easter is the holiest of the holy days for Christendom. Since the time of the early church, determining the date of Easter has been a matter of dispute. The date is calculated to be on the Sunday immediately following the Full Moon after the Equinox (canon established by the Council of Nicea in 325 AD). Most of Christendon, including the Armenian Church (except in Jerusalem), follows the Gregorian calendar.

MONDAY IS MEMORIAL DAY
In the Armenian tradition, the day following each of the five major feast days, is Memorial Day, or Remembrance of the Dead. Traditionally, the Divine Liturgy is celebrated on this day, and afterwards the faithful visit the graves of their loved ones that are blessed by the priest with chants and incense.

FEAST OF THE ANNUNCIATION TO THE VIRGIN MARY
This Tuesday, April 7, is the Feast of the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary. This feast day is always commemorated on April 7, nine months before the birth of Christ. The Feast celebrates the announcement made by the archangel Gabriel to Mary that she would bear the Son of God, as foretold by the Prophet Isaiah (7:1) and as related in the Gospel of Luke (chapter 1).

Rejoice Mary, holy Mother of God, for the Lord has come suddenly into your purified temple; we bless and magnify you. Rejoice closed door through whom no one has passed except the Lord God of Israel; we bless and magnify you. Rejoice sealed fountain of the living water giving to you thirsting nature as drink; we bless and magnify you.
(Canon for the Annunciation to the Holy Mother of God from the Liturgical Canons of the Armenian Church)
