Benefactors Remembrance & Auxiliary Bodies Appreciation Sunday
|
Every year Hovsep and Suzanne Hagopian Saturday School of St. Sarkis Church and the community at large observe a memorial service known as Benefactors Day to honor the legacy of all benefactors of our church and especially for Hovsep and Suzanne Hagopian, who have been graceful benefactors to both Church and School.
Benefactors Day for this year is scheduled for Sunday, October 20, 2013. A Special requiem service will be followed by a memorial luncheon (hokejash).
This year Benefactors day will be combined with Auxiliary Appreciation Day where we will also express our gratitude to all Saint Sarkis Church Auxiliary members who have contributed on various capacities throughout the year to support the programs and activities of St. Sarkis Church.
All members of saint Sarkis auxiliary bodies are encouraged to attend to remember the past, honor the present and plan for the future.
Suzanne and Hovsep Hagopian*
This Sunday is Benefactors' Day at St. Sarkis Church. On this day we pray for the souls of all those who helped to build this spiritual house and make a beacon of light for the community. We remember especially Suzanne and Hovsep Hagopian.
Suzanne and Hovsep Hagopian were a unique couple of exceptional character and vision. Devoted church supporters, their generosity touched many lives and organizations as dedicated servants of the Great House of Cilicia and its Seminary, the Prelacy and the Saint Sarkis Church and School. Hovsep and Suzanne had no children of their own, but they enjoyed the company of young people and made special efforts to encourage young Armenian-Americans in their educational goals.
Mrs. Hagopian was a National Benefactor with many Armenian Institutions benefiting from her generous heart yet the center of her motherly love was the Saint Sarkis Church. Present at its inception, Mrs. Hagopian carefully helped nurture its growth and development through the years and at the time of greatest crisis of maturity of our Church, she challenged us not to dwell on past difficulties but rather to think positively about the future. She generously contributed toward the construction of the "Suzanne and Hovsep Hagopian" Saturday Language School at the newly consecrated St. Sarkis Church and there was never an opportunity that she overlooked to volunteer her time, counsel and financial support in our various Church activities.
In recognition of her outstanding service to the Armenian Church, Mrs. Hagopian was made a Princess of Cilicia by His Holiness Karekin II in 1987. The Prelacy honored her as Woman of the Year in 1985, and the Hamazkain Armenian Educational and Cultural Association honored her in 1991.
Mrs. Suzanne Hagopian's deep commitment to the welfare and financial survival of St. Sarkis Church was expressed through many generous donations. However, none was more symbolic of her motherly love for St. Sarkis Church, as was her final and eternal gift. Upon her death, she bequeathed part of her estate to the Church and School thus securing its perpetual spiritual and financial welfare. Her loving memory has left an imprint in our hearts.

St. Sarkis Church Board of Trustees along with its auxiliary bodies held a special surprise banquet to honor Fr. Nareg Terterian on the 10th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood on Friday evening, October 17th. A surprised Der Nareg was gracefully greeted by His Eminence Archbishop Oshagan, Prelate of the Eastern United States, His Grace Bishop Anoushavan, Vicar General and Rev. Fr. Abraham Malkhasyan, Pastor of Holy Martyrs Armenian Church of Bayside. Celebrating alongside their son, were Der Nareg's parents Mr. & Mrs. Jirair & Arpi Terterian. Nearly 300 parishioners filled the Main Hall of the Church with love and gratitude for Der Nareg on this special day both honoring him and remembering the fruits of his dedication to our St. Sarkis Church.
A beautifully decorated hall set a lovely atmosphere for all. As guests finished their dinner, Board of Trustees Chairman, Dr. Cazazian greeted the guests and introduced a beautifully orchestrated and meaningful Cultural Presentation. Gregory Andreopolous; member of St. Sarkis Youth Club, and St. Sarkis camper spoke eloquently of Der Nareg's dedication to his church and the positive impact he has had on our youth including the various programs implemented by Der Nareg such as, St. Sarkis Summer Camp and the St. Sarkis Youth Club Christapor Megherian; Suzanne and Hovsep Hagopian Saturday School of St. Sarkis graduate, performed two Armenian classical pieces on the piano, including Hayots Mardiger. Members of the St. Sarkis Church Choir, performed beautiful traditional Armenian pieces, Giligia, Ov Medzaskanch, and Yeghetesin Haygagan, under the direction of Maestro Armen Ardzivian. Soloist Deborah Agopian performed the church melody Nor Dzaghig. Deborah is a member of the St. Sarkis Youth Club and Church Choir.
Upon the completion of the cultural program, Dr. Cazazian invited Der Malkhasyan of Holy Martyrs Armenian Church to offer his congratulatory remarks. He spoke of their friendship and strong bond. His Grace, Bishop Tanielian, complimented Der Nareg on his dedication to his community and church. His Eminence, Archbishop Choloyan, spoke of Der Nareg's humble qualities and desire to learn both to better himself and his Church.
A video presentation prepared by Harry Seoylemezian and Raffi Nenejian set to lovely church music, allowed guests to see the photographs of Der Nareg's Ordination Day, ten years ago. It was a touching tribute to both Der Nareg and his family.
Der Nareg humbly thanked his guests and all that were part of this special event. He expressed his gratitude to everyone who organized and attended the event. He thanked His Eminence for believing in him and helping him on this journey and he thanked His Grace for his continued support. In his closing remarks, Der Nareg thanked Yeretzgin Annie and his loving parents who were able to take part in this celebration.

An open letter of gratitude |
Dearest Der Nareg,
On this, your 10th anniversary in priesthood, I personally congratulate you and wish you many many more happy, healthy years as part of our St. Sarkis family.
We had the pleasure of meeting 10 years ago, and I recall our first conversation, you and Yeretzgin Annie were planning on forming a group of Young Adults, who would gather once a week for Bible Study. Shortly after our conversation, my husband and I attended our first Bible Study meeting and instantly became part of a Faithful group of Young Adults and grew so much closer to our church. For many years our Bible Study group met and learned about our religion, grew in our Faith and Spirit and began attending Church service regularly.
Der Nareg, you brought us together in Faith and were able to create a group and mold lifelong friendships, we still hold today. It was not too long before you had another "idea". Our group would host a Valentine's Dance to meet the needs of our community. This very successful tradition is now in its 7th year and has been a "Sold Out" event every year.
One day, in friendly conversation, alongside Yn. Annie, you excitedly asked what I thought about implementing a Summer Camp at our church. I could sense that you had yet another" idea". With a leap of Faith, and not knowing how, when or who would attend, you said "let's dot it". Our Summer Camp journey began....
That first year, with the generous support of Mr. Antranik Boudakian, we hosted 25 happy and eager campers. It has been 10 years since then and with the continued support of Mr. Bouakian, your remarkable vision of St. Sarkis Summer Camp, has grown to nearly 80 campers, 20 staff members, performances, trips, special guests and so much more.
The summer before last during a camp meeting, you once again approached me with yet another "idea"; A Youth Club at St. Sarkis Church. I am proud to say our St. Sarkis Youth Club took its first steps last October with an elected board, planned trips, fundraisers, group discussions, and community service opportunities. Our first year we reached 40 members of youth ages 12-18 who gather at our church for monthly meeting. This past September we held our first meeting and am so excited to announce we had nearly 60 youth members present and excited to join our group.
Der Nareg, you have been such a visionary, always implementing new and interesting ideas to help bring our community together and grow in number, strength and Faith. We, at St. Sarkis Church, thank you for all your hard work and dedication
Through our ten years of friendship we have seen "happy times, sad times". For all the times that we have shared, I am grateful. I call you my friend and mentor and look forward to your next "idea"!
With much Appreciation,
Seta Megherian |

THE FIRST EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE CORINTHIANS 1.18-24
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written:
"I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;
the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate."
Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MATTHEW 24.27-36
For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.
"Immediately after the distress of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken. At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other. Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see all these things, you know that itis near, right at the door. I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
"No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

In Memoriam by Natalie Gabrelian |
HOVNAN M. GIVELEGHIAN
May 30, 1935 - October 18, 2014
Hovnan Giveleghian was born to Mahak & Anna Giveleghian on May 30, 1935 in Chisinau, Basarabia, then part of Romania. His father, a Genocide survivor, had been part of General Antranik's battalion. As a child, Hovnan attended the Orthodox Boarding School with his sister, Zmroukht before the family immigrated to Bucharest in 1944, where he gained his secondary education then went on to graduate summa cum laude from the University of Architecture. A speaker of five languages, young Hovnan was an avid performance speed skater. A lover of the great outdoors, his hobbies included fishing and hunting in his older days.
Hovnan moved to the United States in 1970 with his parents, where fate would soon have him meet my aunt, Anahid (better known as Annick) Sayadian. After a short courtship, the two were married at St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church in 1972, and later blessed with a daughter, Marie Noel, in 1982.
A licensed New York architect, for decades Hovnan worked tirelessly on projects throughout the five boroughs until he fell ill just a few short months ago. But one project remained very special to his heart.
On a stormy night in May 1985, scores of parishioners of St. Sarkis Church in Bayside watched helplessly as a three alarm fire destroyed their spiritual home. Within a year after the old church was destroyed, a piece of land was purchased in Douglaston in May 1986. This became the site of the new St. Sarkis Church. The Ammann & Whitney Architectural Company was hired to draw up the plans for the new church. As it happened, Hovnan, a parishioner of the Church, was employed at this company and became the designated architect assigned to this project. Several committees were organized to oversee the building of the new church. Hovnan and a small group of key community leaders including the late Jack Chadrjian, Esq., chairman of the Fundraising Committee; Michael Haratunian, chairman of the Building Committee; the late Diran Donikian, construction manager; the late Bedros Givelekian, chairman of the Board of Trustees, and Frank Kabarajian devoted their time, energy and resources to the completion of this project. Inspired by the vision of a future church, they made all sacrifices necessary to complete this project. On May 20, 1990, five years after the old Church was destroyed, the consecration of the current St. Sarkis Church took place with His Holiness Karekin II, of blessed memory, then Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, officiating, assisted by Archbishop Mesrob Ashjian, of blessed memory, then Prelate of the Eastern Prelacy, and other clergy including then Very Rev. Anoushavan Tanielian and Rev. Asoghig Kelejian, of blessed memory, Pastor of St. Sarkis Church. On this momentous occasion, Hovnan was one of several dedicated individuals awarded a special reproduction of the Cilician Eagle.
A member of the Board of Trustees, Hovnan, together with Annick and Marie Noel, remained long-time active members of the church he helped build, playing a key role in the variety of events and activities organized by the Ladies Guild, as well as being part of the church choir and the Suzanne & Hovsep Hagopian Saturday School.
Hovnan is survived by his devoted wife of 42 years, Annick, loving daughter Marie Noel & son-in-law Rafi Habibian, precious & adorable grandson Manoug, sister Zmroukht & husband Mihail Pauliuc, nephew Gabriel & family, in-law Lucy Habibian and family, sisters- and brothers-in-law Nicola & Anahid Sayadian, Henry & Marriet Gabrelian, Onig & Seda Kalaigian, and Robert & Ida Sahakian, and multiple generations of loving nieces and nephews from these respective families.
Hovnan jan, you have touched the lives of so many in different ways. You gave selflessly of yourself and were always there for us, no questions asked. You were young at heart with children and a full grown-up with adults. You taught us the value of honor, respect and sacrifice, and knew how to entertain and party when times called for celebration. Whether you were expanding our knowledge of history & politics or satisfying our appetites with your many wonderfully delicious recipes, you will be deeply missed. May God rest your soul in eternal peace, and grant all your family, friends and loved ones strength and patience.

Liturgical Calendar (From Crossroads: E-Newsletter of the Armenian Prelacy) |
TWELVE HOLY TEACHERS OF THE CHURCH
On Saturday, October 25, the Armenian Church remembers the Twelve Holy Teachers (Doctors) of the Church, namely: Hierotheus of Athens, Dionysius the Areopagite, Sylvester of Rome, Athanasius of Alexandria, Cyril of Jerusalem, Ephrem the Syrian, Basil of Caesarea, Gregory of Nyssa, Gregory the Theologian, Epiphanius of Cyprus, John Chrysostom, and Cyril of Alexandria.
FEAST OF THE DISCOVERY OF THE HOLY CROSS
This Sunday, October 26, the Armenian Church celebrates the Feast of the Discovery of the Holy Cross (Giut Khatchi). Empress Helena, mother of Constantine and a devout Christian, wanted to visit the
Holy Land and explore the sites Christ had walked centuries ago. She went to Golgotha (Calvary), which had become an obscure and neglected place. According to some chronicles, it was an informed Jew named Juda who pointed out the location. At her instruction, workers excavated the site and three wooden crosses were found. Which one was the True Cross? The three crosses were successively placed on the body of a youth who had just died. When one of the crosses was placed on him, the young man came back to life. This was determined to be the True Cross. The commemoration of this event takes place on the Sundayclosest to October 26, and can vary from October 23 to 29.
The cross is a great source of pride for Armenians and they have created beautiful works of art using the cross. What once was a means of death became a symbol of salvation and victory.
