| Annual Picnic Was AMAZING!!!! |
Reported By: Mrs. Seta Megherian
Photos By: Mr. Razmig Nenejian, Gallery By: Fr. Nareg Terterian
The much anticipated St. Sarkis picnic took place this past Sunday, the 14th of September. A beautiful, sunny and cool day was the perfect setting for our St. Sarkis family to join together, eat a wonderful meal on our large lawn, enjoy traditional Armenian music and dance.
Many new and exciting changes and additions were made to this years picnic. For the first time the delicious array of traditional Armenian foods, including shish kebab, luleh kebab, chicken kebab, pilaf, and roasted vegetables were sold on the side of the church, under large tents. The delicious food was prepared by Mr. Rouben Daghlyan and his team and Mr. And Mrs. Karnig and Ani Nercessian. A beautiful Cafe was set up in Pagoumian Hall, where specialty coffees, including espresso and cappuccino were sold alongside some fantastic dessert options.
Parishioners enjoyed traditional Armenian music as Mr. Michael Gostanian and Hooshere, along with their band sang and kept the crowd entertained for hours of musical enjoyment.
Even the kids had a great time!! For the first time the picnic featured Kids Meals in unique child friendly boxes, with kid sized portions and activities! The Kid Zone, organized by our amazing Saturday School Parents was a huge success among the kids. From games and fun prizes to arts and craft and even a special Balloon artist, it's safe to say our kids had a great time!!
We greatly thank all those who worked so hard at making this event possible. We thank our devoted committee members, and volunteers for their time and dedication to the success of our picnic.
The St. Sarkis picnic was a huge success!! Thank you to all who joined and supported us!

Have you lost something that you wish someone would give back to you?
How did you lose it?
Is there a story you'd like to tell?
The Bible is full of stories of lost & found: The Parable of the Lost Sheep, The Parable of the Lost Coin and The Parable of the Prodigal son.
Lost and found is a theme that we can all relate to. This year the community of St. Sarkis found something that was long gone, or that's what we thought.
On the night of May 21, 1985, the bell tower of St. Sarkis Church was hit by lightning and the resulting fire destroyed the church. The only item that survived and was left in an intact condition was the small picture of Jesus which we use until today during good friday services.
This summer however we were presented with a shopping bag which contained a blackened chalice. Yes we found the original chalice of the old St. Sarkis Church which a long standing parishioner of our church: Yeghpair Levon Shamlian had discovered in the ashes of the old church on the following day of the destroying fire. Now did you ever have something that was so precious to you that you decided to hide it in a safe place, so safe that even you couldn't find it? that was the case of our chalice. Yeghpair levon hid it in a place that he couldn't find until recently and he brought the chalice back to the church where it belongs.
As I look to this chalice, I can imagine our first pastor Der Asoghik celebrating the Mass, I can imagine our former prelates: Hrant Serpazan, Karekin Serpazan and Mesrob Serpazan presiding over religious celebrations. I can imagine the community of St. Sarkis Church partaking the life giving body and blood of our lord Jesus Christ.... It is all history now and we are the continuation of that history.
The blackened chalice is a reminder that St. Sarkis Church has risen from the ashes!

THE SECOND EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL
TO THE CORINTHIANS (10.18 - 11.10)
For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.
I hope you will put up with a little of my foolishness; but you are already doing that. I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him. But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough. But I do not think I am in the least inferior to those "super-apostles." I may not be a trained speaker, but I do have knowledge. We have made this perfectly clear to you in every way.
Was it a sin for me to lower myself in order to elevate you by preaching the gospel of God to you free of charge? I robbed other churches by receiving support from them so as to serve you. And when I was with you and needed something, I was not a burden to anyone, for the brothers who came from Macedonia supplied what I needed. I have kept myself from being a burden to you in any way, and will continue to do so. As surely as the truth of Christ is in me, nobody in the regions of Achaia will stop this boasting of mine.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
ACCORDING TO ST. MARK (10.1-12)
Jesus then left that place and went into the region of Judea and across the Jordan. Again crowds of people came to him, and as was his custom, he taught them.
Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?" "What did Moses command you?" he replied. They said, "Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away." "It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law," Jesus replied. "But at the beginning of creation God 'made them male and female.' 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate." When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. He answered, "Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery."

Feast Of Saints Febronia, Mariana, And Shoushan
Next Tuesday, September 23, the Armenian Church celebrates the Febronia, Mariana, and Shoushan, daughter of Vartan Mamigonian and great-granddaughter of Sahag Bartev. Shoushan is perhaps the best known of the three. She was educated under the tutelage of St. Sahag and her mother, Sahaganoosh. Her father's life and martyrdom influenced her to become a devout and faithful Christian. Her birth name was Varteny, but she was called Shoushan because of her extraordinary piety. She was married to Vazken, a son of a Georgian king, and had three sons and a daughter. After the death of her father-in-law, her husband became power-hungry, went to Persia, renounced the Christian faith and returned to Georgia with another wife, and tried to force Shoushan to renounce her Christian faith. Even after years of imprisonment and torture she refused to renounce the faith for which her father had fought so valiantly.
Febronia was a nun of extraordinary beauty at Nisibis in Mesopotamia. She was offered to be spared from persecution and torture if she renounced her religion. She refused and was brutally martyred.
Although the daughter of idol worshippers, Mariana was raised by a woman who was secretly a Christian and was baptized at age twelve. At the age of fifteen she confessed to her father that she was a Christian. She refused to renounce her religion, as well as the offer of marriage by a local official telling him that she was "married to Christ." She was tortured for three days and beheaded.
