Summer Camp - 9th Year: A Recap
Reported by Mrs. Seta Megherian & Jeanette Nenejian
It's been one week since the laughter and excitement of our children filled our halls during the 9th annual St. Sarkis Summer Camp. Although our much anticipated two week session has come to an end the memories created this summer will live forever.
9 years ago, the idea to bring the children of our community together sprouted with a brilliant idea by our wonderful Der Nareg with the support of our devoted benefactors Antranig and Marion Boudakian. That first summer we greeted 25 campers. Today, our camp hosts nearly 80 campers with a staff of over 20. Campers who started our program in our first years are now in our oldest groups and have fond memories of their summers spent at our camp.
At St. Sarkis Camp all campers are in age appropriate groups and all take part in fun and enriching activities. This year we added some fun and new activities such as the Fun Bus for our younger groups. Campers ages 3-6 enjoyed their time tumbling, climbing, jumping and swinging in a fitness program run by two professional teachers. We also had a professional Tae Kwon Do teacher who worked with all the campers, Master Joe, of New York Black Belt Center in Bayside, was a great deal of fun and a wonderful learning experience for all. His program taught respect and self defense in a fun and age appropriate manner. The campers were all so excited and eager to take part in his classes. Campers also enjoyed Soccer lessons by Raffi and Razmig Nenejian. These action pact soccer classes were so much fun and the campers learned some great techniques as well. We were so excited to have the professional team of 3 time Emmy Award Winner Louie Zakarian, Special Effects Make Up team join us and treat the campers to special make up tricks and real makeup for each camper. Mrs. Janet Tutuyan treated our campers with wonderful Science experiments and thought provoking projects that all the campers loved.
As we entered the second week of Summer Camp we changed it up a bit and took a bus trip to The Atlantis Aquarium in Riverhead, Long Island. Although the morning was grey and rainy we had hope it would clear and luckily the rain held up for our excited campers and the visit was a success. We were able to see a funny seal show and enjoyed beautiful tropical fishes along with sharks but luckily we were far from them. Can't wait for our next trip!
Our wonderful and professional staff and our amazing CIT's planned and worked at making a fun and enriching camp experience for all their campers. We sincerely thank our staff members Nayda Voskerijian, Yvette Fiesel, Tatev Ananian, Julietta Ananian, Jeanette Nenejian, Corina Popescu, Talin Baghdassarian, Zepiur Ardzivian, Levon Zohrabian, Seta Megherian, we also thank our CIT's for their hard work, Christapor Megherian, Sevag Hagobian, Sevag Ebrimian, Deborah Agopian, and Ariana Kazanjian. We also thank Der Nareg for his worship services and enlightening sermons as well as his teaching of the bible all throughout the two weeks.
A fantastic time was had by all who attended! Please stay tuned for our tenth anniversary Coming up in the summer of 2015!

A READING FROM THE FIRST EPISTLE OF ST. JOHN (1.1-17)
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched-this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our joy complete.
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MATTHEW (17.1-9)
After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.
Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters-one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah." While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!" When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. But Jesus came and touched them. "Get up," he said. "Don't be afraid." 8When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, "Don't tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."

FEAST OF TRANSFIGURATION
This Sunday, July 27, the Armenian Church observes one of its five major feasts, the Feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord Jesus Christ (Aylakerputiunm / Vartavar). This Feast is observed fourteen weeks after Easter, and therefore can fall between June 28 and August 1. It commemorates an episode in the New Testament recorded by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and Peter. (See today's Bible reading for the text from the Gospel according to St. Matthew).
The Transfiguration took place on the "holy mountain" (believed to be Mt. Tabor) where Jesus went with John, James and Peter to pray. As He was praying, "His face shone like the sun and His garments became white as light." The Patriarch Moses and Prophet Elijah appeared at His side. It was at this moment that His appearance was "transfigured" revealing himself as God to His disciples as a voice from above said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. Listen to him."
The pre-Christian festival, Vartavar (Festival of Roses), was joined with this new Christian holiday. Armenians would decorate the temple of the goddess of Asdghig (goddess of love, beauty, fertility, and water) with roses, release doves, and engage in water games on this pre-Christian holiday. St. Gregory the Illuminator combined Vartavar with Transfiguration. The fifth century historian Yeghishe wrote the prayer that is recited in church on this feast: "O Lord, bless the harvest of this year and defend from all the perils, and may Your right hand, O Lord, protect us for the whole year."
Vartavar became a traditional day of pilgrimage to churches named in honor of St. John the Baptist. The most popular destination was the Monastery of Sourp Garabed of Moush, founded by Gregory the Illuminator in the province of Taron near Moush. (Garabed means Forerunner, referring to John the Baptist). The monastery was large and expansive and built like a fortress in the mountains. More than one thousand pilgrims could be accommodated. After 1915 the complex ceased to exist. The monastery was destroyed by the Turkish army, and the ravages of time, weather and scavengers completed its destruction. The once large and thriving Armenian monastery is now a mass of stone and rubble.
This Sunday is the name day for those named Vartkes, Vartavar, Vart, Vartouhi, Alvart, Sirvart, Nevart, Lousvart, Baidzar, Vartanoush, Vartiter, Varvar.
