Summer Camp - 9th Year/Week 2
Reported by Mrs. Seta Megherian

Our 9th season of St. Sarkis Summer Camp has just come to a close. With over 75 campers, our St. Sarkis halls were all filled with fun, and excitement for the past two weeks.

Campers enjoyed many fun activities including Soccer, Karate, Science, Special Effects Make-up presentation, Fun Bus, Music, Dance and much much more! Campers reunited with old friends and made new ones, all while making lasting memories.

Each day our stellar staff prepared fun art, science and sport activities for the campers to enjoy.  A number of entertaining and fun activities were also planned throughout the two weeks.

His Eminence Archbishop Oshagan, Prelate and His Grace Bishop Anoushavan, Vicar General visited us this past week.  Campers happily greeted them and answered questions asked of them.  They all sang songs they had learned in the past days.  They encouraged us all to keep this wonderful camp going strong as they shared a meal with campers.

We would like to thank our sponsors and donors for their ongoing support and dedication in making our camp a success. We thank Antranig and Marion Boudakian for sponsoring the lunch for the full two weeks,  Harout and Nyri Khatchadourian for donating the beautiful Camp T shirts, Dr. Aram and Rima Cazazian for sponsoring our Karate program, Arthur and Annette  Givelekian and Berge and Denise Panosyan for each sponsoring a pizza lunch, Louie and Adriana Zakarian for sponsoring a special effects make up artist to entertain our campers and Levon and Sandy Shamlian for their donation.

All in all we had a fantastic, safe and fun summer! We are greatly looking forward to our 10th year!!!

Last Sunday's Sermon

A Story About Wheat and Weeds
A Story About Wheat and Weeds*
Nothing can replace the experience of attending church on Sundays and being part of the Divine Liturgy celebration. However, you can listen to the sermon that was delivered at St. Sarkis Church last Sunday.

This is a sermon that was given last year as the sermon from last week was not recorded due to an issue.

St. Sarkis Youth Club 2014

As mentioned in last week's Bulletin, each week we will be spotlighting a St. Sarkis Youth Club member in our Bulletin.  Our children are our future! Their accomplishments both within our church and various communities are astounding.  We are excited to share their many accomplishments with you.  We know you will be proud and amazed by our beautiful children.

James Zobian

James is an active member of our St. Sarkis Church family.  He will be entering the 10th grade this Fall at Hicksville High School.  He has taken all honors classes since the 7th grade and has consistently made Honor Roll and Principal's List.  James is a member of the Junior National Honor Society and National Italian Honor Society.

Since the third grade, James has played violin in the school orchestra and now plays 1st violin.  His violin was a very special gift to him from his beloved grandmother Vartouhi Zobian shortly before she passed.  She loved to hear James play the violin and was always so proud of him.

James is also very active in Sports.  He has played basketball, football and baseball for many years.  His favorite is baseball and he plays First Base for his travel team.  This year he participated in the Homenetmen Navasartian games where he played basketball.

James is so proud of his Armenian roots and heritage.  He was baptized at St. Sarkis Church and has since attended our SundaySchool and is now attending our Saturday School Program.  He enjoys attending church and serves on the alter.  Spending quality time with his Armenian friends is priceless to James and thus he is a member of the St. Sarkis Youth Club and is currently attending the St. Sarkis Summer Camp where he is making lasting friendships and wonderful memories.

Wanting to learn as much as he can about his Armenian roots and heritage James completed two projects about the Armenian Genocide for his English class last year, his teacher was instrumental in introducing him to other Armenian students in the school.  He now has a "brotherhood" of new Armenian friends.

"This Youth Group is a great way for young Armenians to interact and get to know one another and keep our heritage alive"!

A READING FROM THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE ROMANS (11:13-24)

But I am speaking to you who are Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle of Gentiles, I magnify my ministry, if somehow I might move to jealousy my fellow countrymen and save some of them. For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? If the first piece of dough is holy, the lump is also; and if the root is holy, the branches are too.

But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive, were grafted in among them and became partaker with them of the rich root of the olive tree, do not be arrogant toward the branches; but if you are arrogant, remember that it is not you who supports the root, but the root supports you. You will say then, "Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in." Quite right, they were broken off for their unbelief, but you stand by your faith. Do not be conceited, but fear; for if God did not spare the natural branches, He will not spare you, either. Behold then the kindness and severity of God; to those who fell, severity, but to you, God's kindness, if you continue in His kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off. And they also, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. For if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these who are the natural branches be grafted into their own olive tree?

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MATTHEW (14.13-21)

Now when Jesus heard about John, He withdrew from there in a boat to a secluded place by Himself; and when the people heard of this, they followed Him on foot from the cities. When He went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and healed their sick.

When it was evening, the disciples came to Him and said, "This place is desolate and the hour is already late; so send the crowds away, that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves." But Jesus said to them, "They do not need to go away; you give them something to eat!" They said to Him, "We have here only five loaves and two fish." And He said, "Bring them here to Me." Ordering the people to sit down on the grass, He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food, and breaking the loaves He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds, and they all ate and were satisfied. They picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve full baskets. There were about five thousand men who ate, besides women and children.

TWELVE APOSTLES OF CHRIST AND SAINT PAUL, THE THIRTEENTH APOSTLE
This Saturday, July 19, the Armenian Church celebrates the Feast of the Twelve Apostles of Christ and Saint Paul, who is considered the thirteenth apostle.
Jesus selected twelve apostles to carry on His work and instructed them to preach and to baptize converts all over the world (Mt. 28:19-20). He gave the title "apostle" to the twelve (Luke6:13; Mark 3:14). The word apostle derives from the Greek word apostellein (arakyal in Armenian). The apostles dedicated their lives to spreading the Word and fulfilling the sacred mission entrusted to them. Their mission was not just to transmit the message, but to put it into practice.
Paul was initially an enemy of Christians and persecuted them. He had a vision on the road to Damascus and became a fervent Christian convert and was subsequently responsible in large measure for the rapid spread of the new religion. Most of the New Testament (aside from the four Gospels) is from the writings of Paul.
The Armenian Church has its roots in the apostolic ministry and succession (Thaddeus and Bartholomew) and is therefore known as "apostolic," (arakelagan). The apostles and their immediate successors (including the Armenian Church) defended the Orthodox faith and kept it pure.
