St. Sarkis Youth Club 2014
|
As mentioned in last week's Bulletin, each week we will be spotlighting a St. Sarkis Youth Club member in our Bulletin. Our children are our future! Their accomplishments both within our church and various communities are astounding. We are excited to share their many accomplishments with you. We know you will be proud and amazed by our beautiful children.
Christapor Megherian
St. Sarkis Church has been a second home to Christapor since his early years. His time spent here among good friends and enriching programs has helped him achieve great success thus far.
Christapor is looking forward to his High School graduation in the coming weeks from North High School in Franklin Square. Due to his academic excellence he takes mostly AP classes which include, US History, Government, Biology, and Science Research.
St. Sarkis Church has played an integral role in Christapor's life thus far. He has attended our Sunday School, and he is a proud graduate of our Saturday School, of which he continues his studies in the Post Graduate Program, offered at St. Sarkis. Christapor has taken part in the Hamazkain Question/Answer program, which he has successfully completed five years in a row. He has represented our church in the Datev program and at Camp Haiastan, where he has enjoyed his time among his Armenian friends and learned more about his Armenian culture and faith. Last year Christapor was ordained an Acolyte and serves on the alter. He completed the course offered by Der Nareg and today serves nearly each Sunday.
As one of our original campers at St. Sarkis, Christapor has enjoyed numerous summers among friends, creating life long memories. For the past two years, Christapor has served our camp as a CIT, helping the camp run smoothly and setting a wonderful example to our campers. Christapor also spent many years as a member of the Yeraz Dance Ensemble where he learned his traditional Armenian dance and performed in Boston, Washington, And New York. Christapor is an avid musician as well. He has successfully completed Level 6 of NYSMA in piano. He also plays guitar and trumpet at his school. He is in the Jazz Ensemble and School Orchestra for trumpet. He was also in the Marching Band, where his school was featured on News 12. Sports is another favorite pastime for Christapor. He loves soccer and plays on his school team and with his friends when he can. Currently, Christapor is an elected board member of the St. Sarkis Youth Club, which he was elected to serve as the board Treasurer. Learning invaluable lessons through this program, Christapor looks forward to his time with the youth of our church and is constantly looking for new and creative ways to fundraise for our group as well as grow in number.
Christapor is proud to call himself "Armenian". In the recent years, Christapor visited Armenia. This life changing experience is embedded in his heart. He saw many of the historical sites he had learned of in Armenian School, and learned so much about his people.
Christapor and his family are proud and excited to announce that he has been accepted to Queens College, where he will be a Biology major this Fall. He plans on attending Medical School following his undergraduate studies.
Christapor, we congratulate you on your achievements and look forward to hearing of your continued success. We are so proud of you. We thank you for your dedication and support of our programs. You are a wonderful role model!!!

THE FIRST EPISTLE OF ST. PETER THE APOSTLE (2.1-10)
Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.
As you come to him, the living Stone-rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him- you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For in Scripture it says: "See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame." Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, "The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone, and, "A stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall." They stumble because they disobey the message-which is also what they were destined for. But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO JOHN (3.1-12)
Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, "Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him."
In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again." "How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!" Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.' The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit." "How can this be?" Nicodemus asked. "You are Israel's teacher," said Jesus, "and do you not understand these things? I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things?

Last Saturday Deborah Agopian celebrated her sweet 16 at the main hall of St. Sarkis Church along with her parents, family members and friends.
We would like to share with you the words that Debbie's dad Subdeacon Berdj Agopian spoke on this happy occasion:
Today is Debbie's Sweet Sixteen thank you for coming and sharing this special day with us. I'm very excited.
Today, marks another special occasion. It is one of the few times that I get to speak for both of us.
Sixteen is a special time of life. It marks the passage from little girl to young lady.
Debbie, we have tried to impart our shared wisdom upon you every day of our life. So today, we would like to take a few minutes to share 16 wishes that we have for you, our "little Debbie."
- First, we wish for you to always keep the exuberance of youth in your heart-regardless of how old you are.
- For you to have Faith in God and to keep His Commandments, for only through Him are all things possible.
- For you to do good works. As the Bible tells us "faith without works is dead." So always confirm your faith with good works.
- We wish for you Hope-that the "Anchor of Hope" will always keep your soul steadfast and firm.
- For Charity to always be in your heart so you will not forget the less fortunate.
- For you to keep your eyes and ears open so that when opportunity knocks you will not let it pass by.
- For you to live up to the meaning of your name which is "speaks kind words".
- For you to remember your namesake Deborah-the fourth judge of Israel who was venerated for her courage and wisdom.
- We wish for you prudence so that you may live carefully and mind the company you keep.
- For Love, so that you may find love in your life and honor it always.
- For you to live with temperance and to never let your passions get away from you.
- For fortitude, so that you may have the strength to endure all that comes your way.
- For honor, so that you may live honorably, because your word is truly all that you have.
- For you to love and protect the United States of America, your home. And, to be a good citizen.
- For you to remember that you are Armenian, which means the church is your second home. Always bring honor to that heritage with your life and pass it along to your children.
- Above all else, we wish for you a good, long and happy life. You should always be proud of the record of your life.
Debbie, we love you and we will always be here for you. Our children are our Magnum Opus. |
GREEN SUNDAY
Easter Sunday is followed by a period of fifty days (Hinoonk) during which there are no fasting days and no saints' days. This period from the Resurrection to Pentecost (Hokekaloost) is dedicated to the glorification of the Resurrection. Each of the seven Sundays of Hinoonk has a special name. Last Sunday, the first Sunday after Easter, was New Sunday.
This Sunday, May 4, is Green Sunday (Ganach Giragi), also called Sunday of the World Church (Ashkharhamadoor), that commemorates the establishment in Jerusalem of the first Christian church where Christ met with the Apostles in the upper room.
Green Sunday most probably originates from an ancient folk holiday celebrating spring. Our forefathers, seeing mother earth bloom after long winter months, glorified the Creator with an act of thanksgiving and celebrated by decorating the church and themselves with greenery. The reawakening of nature is symbolic of the Resurrection. Green is the color of life, freshness, and promise. After a barren winter we are filled with hope, life, and love.
Green Sunday is the perfect time for us to remember and reinforce our obligations to be good stewards of the earth and to be caretakers of the gifts given to us by God. More than twenty years ago, on May 12, 1993, the Clergy Conference at the Prelacy's National Representative Assembly that convened at Soorp Khatch Church, in Maryland, issued a strong statement on the environment and recommended that each year "Green Sunday, the second Sunday after Easter, be declared a day when all the faithful of the Church observe the sanctity of God's creation and the purity of the environment."
