"Liturgy, Tradition and Education" Series at St. Sarkis Church

On Friday evening March 14, 2014, The Community of St. Sarkis Church observed the second Lenten Vesper Service of the season which was presided over by His Eminence Archbishop Oshagan, Prelate.

Following Church Services a book presentation was held. Commentary on the Nicene Creed written by Archbishop Zareh Aznavorian, of blessed memory, was translated by Dn. Shant Kazanjian, Executive Director of AREC, who made the presentation. Dn. Shant spoke briefly about the origin and the function of creeds in general and the Nicene Creed in particular. He then presented the book, its structure and content, highlighting various elements and some unique aspects of the Armenian version of the Creed.

The lecture was followed by a lovely spread of Lenten foods prepared by the organizing committee of Senior Citizen's Club.

The third Lenten vesper service (Peace and Compline - Խաղաղական  եւ Հանգստեան Ժամերգութիւններ) will be offered tonight at 6:30 PM at St. Sarkis Church.  At the end of the Service, Dr. Gregory Kazanjianwill make a presentation on the Passion of Christ.

The fellowship hour of this evening will be hosted by the Ladies Guild of St. Sarkis Church.

BabySitting Will Be Offered for Young Children

Join us tonight to pray the great vespers of the Armenian Church, learn more about the tenets of our faith and savor traditional Lenten homemade foods.

St. Sarkis Church hosted an Open Forum for American-Armenian College & University Students of New York on Saturday March 15, 2014. The afternoon started with Mr. Shont Vosgerijian's opening remarks. Guest speakers Mr. Aram Babikian, a financial analyst and Mr. John D. Megerian, Esq. made two presentations relevant to their field of expertise along with some practical ideas on networking. A group discussion followed the presentation where participants introduced themselves and shared about their future plans, their strengths and challenges. St. Sarkis Youth Club 2014

As mentioned in last week's Bulletin, each week we will be spotlighting a St. Sarkis Youth Club member in our Bulletin.  Our children are our future! Their accomplishments both within our church and various communities are astounding.  We are excited to share their many accomplishments with you.  We know you will be proud and amazed by our beautiful children.

Rebecca Holmquist

Rebecca is a very active member of our St. Sarkis community and has been for

many years.  Currently, Rebecca is in her Freshman year at Adelphi University in Garden City with a Merit Scholarship.  She plans on becoming a Business Major or maybe even a Computer Science Major.

St. Sarkis Church has played a vital role in Rebecca's life thus far.  She was baptized here and has since has grown to love her church dearly.  She is an active member of our Church Choir for many years, where she sings our Badarak, alongside her cousin Deborah, mom and aunt. Rebecca also just recently formally became a member of our St. Sarkis Ladies Guild where she actively serves her Church community.

Our Church community is at the heart of Rebecca's entire family.  Each Sunday her family gathers together in worship and service here at our church.  She is inspired by her loving Grandpa and Grandma who always come with the family to church and she has learned much about helping her church community through their acts of kindness and giving to help in our church grow and prosper.

Rebecca is one of our original campers at our St. Sarkis Summer Camp.  She has enjoyed wonderful summers, making new friends and enjoying fun activities with her peers.  She has since become a CIT, where she has helped serve the camp by assisting teachers and programs.  She has also represented our Church by attending the Datev program, which she has been part of for two years.

Rebecca is not only active in our Church community but in her School community as well.  She is currently on the Fencing Club, in the Ballroom Club, Finance Society and in the accounting society at Adelphi University.  While in the Finance Club Becky claimed 1st prize for her stock market portfolio.   Many of these clubs have opportunities to volunteer to various charities such as, Relay for Life.  Rebecca takes great joy in helping others.

Rebecca is currently an elected board member of the Youth Club and greatly enjoys her time here.

" I love my church and it's like a second home.  The members have really influenced me and I intend to make many happy memories there".

Rebecca, we are so proud of you! Keep up the great work!

THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE EPHESIANS (4:17-5:14)

So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed.
That, however, is not the way of life you learned when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body. "In your anger do not sin": Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold. Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
Follow God's example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person-such a person is an idolater-has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them.
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible-and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. This is why it is said:
   "Wake up, sleeper,
   rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you."

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (16.1-31)

Jesus told his disciples: "There was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting his possessions. So he called him in and asked him, 'What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you cannot be manager any longer.'
"The manager said to himself, 'What shall I do now? My master is taking away my job. I'm not strong enough to dig, and I'm ashamed to beg- I know what I'll do so that, when I lose my job here, people will welcome me into their houses.'
"So he called in each one of his master's debtors. He asked the first, 'How much do you owe my master?'
" 'Eight hundred gallons of olive oil,' he replied.
"The manager told him, 'Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it four hundred.'
"Then he asked the second, 'And how much do you owe?'
" 'A thousand bushels of wheat,' he replied.
"He told him, 'Take your bill and make it eight hundred.'
"The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light. I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.
"Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else's property, who will give you property of your own?
"No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money."
The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus. He said to them, "You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of men, but God knows your hearts. What is highly valued among men is detestable in God's sight.
"The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it. It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law.
"Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
"There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
"The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried. In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'
"But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.'
"He answered, 'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.'
"Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.'
" 'No, father Abraham,' he said, 'but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.'
"He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.' "

This Saturday, March 22, the Armenian Church commemorates the lives of the following four saints:

St. John, Patriarch of Jerusalem, succeeded St. Cyril as Patriarch of Jerusalem (386-417). He grew up with the monks at the monastery of Nitria (Egypt) where he learned about Christianity and the teachings of Origen. He was noted for his keen intellect and is said to have delivered inspiring and eloquent sermons.
Hovhan Odznetsi (St. John of Otzoon) was catholicos from 717 to 728, which was a period when Armenia was under Arab rule. He defended Armenians from forced conversion and was successful in securing the right of worship for Armenian Christians. He was also successful in securing tax-exempt status for the church. He was highly admired and respected.
Hovhan Vorodnetsi (St. John of Orotni) was born in 1315. Following his ordination he served at the monasteries of Klatzor and Datev. He dedicated most of his efforts toward the preservation of the orthodox faith, and against the attempt to merge the Armenian Church with the Latin Church. He wrote commentaries on the Gospel of John and the epistles of St. Paul.
Krikor Datevatzi (St. Gregory of Datev), born in 1346 in the province of Vayotz Tsor, is perhaps the best known of the four. He was a student of John of Orotni and a great defender of the character of the Armenian Church. He was a brilliant scholar; he knew Latin fluently and had studied the Greek philosophers extensively. He is regarded to be the greatest teacher of the Armenian Church. His most famous work is the Book of Questions (Kirk Hartsmants), which examines questions of faith. He is also credited with setting a high standard for preaching. He is often referred to as "the second Gregory the Illuminator."
Datevatzi, who died in 1409, has the distinction of being the last person to be canonized in the Armenian Church. To this day no others have followed him.
 SUNDAY OF THE STEWARD
This Sunday, March 23, the fourth Sunday of Lent, is the Sunday of the Steward (Tntesi Kiraki). The parable of The Unrighteous Steward is in the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 16, verses 1 to 8. This parable is about a rich man and his steward. The steward was one who looked out for his own personal benefit and through his cunning arrangements he made deals with those who were in debt to his master. Jesus used this parable not to condone the behavior of the steward but rather as an illustration of qualities that have a necessary place in the life of true disciples. Since we are stewards of the world, we are accountable to our Lord for the talents we have and the things that have been entrusted to our care.
Throughout his ministry, Jesus used parables as a teaching tool. His parables were common stories, usually short and always interesting. Generally, the stories were used to convey important moral and ethical lessons. Some of the parables are simple and easy to comprehend. Others are complex and more challenging.
