Welcome to the Monthly Morning Service of Prayer and Worship for Parents & Children at St. Sarkis church. Here are a few things that you might want to know about our service.
- We say all the prayers in English.
- There is no choir to sing; therefore we sing all the hymns.
- Someone from the congregation does the Gospel Reading of the day.
- The priest gives a short homily.
- We read the confession and take the Holy Communion.
- We feel like we are a part of a family of faith.
Join us on Sunday 02/09/2014 at 9:00 AM for our monthly Family Worship Service.

6th Annual Valentine's Dinner Party
|
On Saturday evening, February 1st, the Young Adults of St. Sarkis hosted the 6th annual Valentine's Dinner Dance. Once again, it was a SOLD OUT event! Nearly 215 guests filled the Main Hall of our church and spent a wonderful evening dancing to the amazing music of Elie Berberian and His Band from Montreal. The Hall was beautifully decorated and a warm intimate atmosphere greeted our guests from near and far. Guests enjoyed a lovely, lavish dinner and danced throughout the evening. It was an exceptional evening and much fun for all.

Nothing can replace the experience of attending church on Sundays and being part of the Divine Liturgy celebration. However, you can listen to the sermon that was delivered at St. Sarkis Church last Sunday.

As mentioned in last week's Bulletin, each week we will be spotlighting a St. Sarkis Youth Club member in our Bulletin. Our children are our future! Their accomplishments both within our church and various communities are astounding. We are excited to share their many accomplishments with you. We know you will be proud and amazed by our beautiful children.
Sevag Ebrimian
Sevag Ebrimian is an 11th grade student at Syosset HIgh School. St. Sarkis Armenian Church has played an integral role in his life thus far.
Sevag began his journey at St. Sarkis as a Saturday School student, of which he is a proud graduate. His strong Armenian roots are fundamentally important to him and he takes great pride in his language, culture and religion.
Sevag has represented St. Sarkis Church four times at the Hamazkayin Armenian Question/ Answer Program and has successfully completed the question/answer four times. He has won two awards for 100% accuracy in 2012 and 2013. He has also attended our St. Sarkis Summer Camp program for several years and has been an outstanding camper. Sevag has made wonderful, lasting friendships through the many programs offered here at St. Sarkis Church. He has spent the past three summers at the Datev Institute, where he also represented our church. For three years, Sevag has taken part in the Yeraz Dance Ensemble, which he enjoyed greatly. Within his church, are embedded many wonderful memories and life long friendships.
As a student, Sevag is enrolled in many rigorous classes, which he is excited and passionate about. He is currently taking a college introductory class to Nano- Technology, a program sponsored by Stony Brook University. Upon completion of this class he will receive three credits towards his college experience. Sevag is a member of the Technology Club at his school, and greatly enjoys learning new and exciting things each and every day. He spends a great deal of time on his studies and is looking forward to the start of his college experience upon graduating High School, next Spring. His dream is to become an Engineer.
Sevag greatly enjoys Wrestling and thus is an active member of his school's Wrestling Team. Recently, Sevag was elected to serve as the Group Leader for the 15-18 year olds at our St. Sarkis Youth Club. He takes pride in his duties and does his best to support the Club in every way he can. He has taken an active role in all our programs thus far, including the Food Drive, this past Fall.
Sevag is greatly fond of his beloved Church and community which has played such an important role in his life. He plans on staying close to his community and envisions his future here at St. Sarkis.
Sevag, we are so proud of you! You have excelled as a member of our Church family and continue to flourish within your school and community. We encourage you to follow your dreams of becoming an engineer and look forward to hearing of your ongoing success!

St. Sarkis Church Calendar
|
This year St. Sarkis Church has dedicated its calendar to the 100th Anniversary of Arshile Gorky, an Armenian born American Artist, 1904-1948. The calendar is filled with images of Gorky's work. We have received some wonderful feedback from our parishioners and we thank you for your support and well wishes for the upcoming year. Recently, we had a request from Holy Martyrs Armenian Day School to send the sixth grade class a few copies for a class project they were working on in honor of Arshile Gorky. A beautiful note of appreciation was just received from the class of 2014 as well as the principal, Mrs. Zarmine Boghosian. We would like to extend our gratitude to our parishioners for their ongoing support.

THE SECOND EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO TIMOTHY (2:15-26)
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved by him, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly explaining the word of truth. Avoid profane chatter, for it will lead people into more and more impiety, and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have swerved from the truth by claiming that the resurrection has already taken place. They are upsetting the faith of some. But God's firm foundation stands, bearing this inscription: "The Lord knows those who are his," and, "Let everyone who calls on the name of the Lord turn away from wickedness."
In a large house there are utensils not only of gold and silver but also of wood and clay, some for special use, some for ordinary. All who cleanse themselves of the things I have mentioned will become special utensils, dedicated and useful to the owner of the house, ready for every good work. Shun youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. Have nothing to do with stupid and senseless controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but kindly to everyone, an apt teacher, patient, correcting opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant that they will repent and come to know the truth, and that they may escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will.
THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO JOHN (6.15-21)
When Jesus realized that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain by himself.
When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were terrified. But he said to them, "It is I; do not be afraid." Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the land toward which they were going.

PAREGENTAN OF THE FAST OF THE CATECHUMENS
This Sunday, February 9, is the Paregentan (Mardi Gras) of the Fast of the Catechumens. A catechumen is someone who is receiving instruction in the fundamentals of the faith while preparing for baptism. This occurs three weeks before Poun Paregentan (Eve of Great Lent) and ten weeks before Easter. The Fast of the Catechumens is five days of strict fast (dzom). Traditionally, the Catechumens were instructed for several hours daily and required to stand through every church service, separate from the baptized congregation. This continued until Easter when the catechumens were baptized and anointed and received their first communion.
SONS AND GRANDSONS OF ST. GREGORY
This Saturday, February 8, the Armenian Church remembers the sons and grandsons of St. Gregory the Illuminator: Sts. Aristakes, Vrtanes, Housik, Grigoris, and Daniel (who was not related, but as a distinguished student of St. Gregory). All of them continued the work of St. Gregory, preaching the word of Christ, at great personal peril.
St. Gregory had two sons, Aristakes and Vrtanes. Aristakes, the younger son, succeeded Gregory as Catholicos and was martyred around 333 A.D. He represented the Armenian Church at the first ecumenical council of Nicaea in 325. It was at this council that the Nicene Creed, recited to this day during the Divine Liturgy, was written and adopted. Vrtanes-at this time over 70 years old-was called upon to become catholicos and served for eight years until his death. Vrtanes had two sons, Grigoris and Housig. Grigoris preached in the northern provinces of Armenia (present day Georgia) where he was martyred. Housig, although not a clergyman, was called upon to assume the catholicosal throne. He was martyred in 347. Daniel, who as noted above was not related by blood to Gregory, is included with the sons and grandsons. He was chosen to succeed Housig as catholicos, but never actually served as he too was martyred one year later in 348.
