Among the many reasons to feel good about our St. Sarkis Church, let us try to add another one: The Saint Sarkis Senior Boys Basketball team is undefeated in the defense of their 2013 Champions title.

Sporting a record of 3 wins and no losses, the team shows maturity and harmony in their play. Vahe Athakanian acts as the playmaker and field general, Erik Iskendarian is a defensive star at center, Armand Avedissian with a sharpshooter's skill and a huge vertical jump, Aren Kabarajian controlling the paint, Haig Minassian as a very effective power forward, rejoining the team after a 2 year absence in California, Shant Panoyan and Chris Avakyan, sparkplugs coming off the bench to lift the team, the whole team works as a well oiled machine under the guidance and encouragement of Coach Vahram Shishmanian, assisted by Albert Avedissian.

We take this opportunity to invite everyone to attend games that our team plays in Queens (after church services) , and also  wish our Coach Vahram and bride to be Natalie our congratulations on their marriage this weekend and a happy, healthy and joyful life.

A Special Donation

Mr. & Mrs. Hratch and Negdar Arukian, the lucky winners of the raffle for the Armenian Cruise donated $500.00 to the church as a token of gratitude and appreciation.

Art Show on Voice of Armenians

As you know, St. Sarkis Church sends its parishioners a calendar at the beginning of each year. The 2014 calendar is being prepared to be printed in full color and distributed to all parishioners free of charge.

Since there are only twelve pages that can be sponsored (one page for each month), there is very limited space offered for this purpose. In keeping with current economic conditions, each of the twelve months will be sponsored for the modest amount of $750.00. This means that pages can be sponsored in several ways allowing the entire parish to take part in this fundraising project.

Please check your level of sponsorship and contact the church office as soon as possible.

Ladies Guild Fall Food Festival

Following last year's success, the second season of Deacon's and sub deacon's training program started on September 22 at St. Sarkis Church. Training sessions are being conducted by Fr. Nareg Terterian in the sanctuary every Sunday 9:15-10:00 AM.  The 10 weeks program will conclude on November 24.

Current and prospective Altar servers are encouraged to attend. For registration call the Church Office 718-224-2275. 

THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE EPHESIANS (5.15-33)

Be very careful, then, how you live-not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church- for we are members of his body. "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." This is a profound mystery-but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Archangels Michael and Gabriel

This Saturday, November 9, the Armenian Church commemorates the Archangels Michael and Gabriel. The word "angel" (hreshdag) means messenger. Archangel is a title given to an angel of high rank in the celestial hierarchy.

Michael (Hebrew meaning "Who is like God") is the prince of all angels and the leader of the celestial armies. He is considered to be the protector of Christians in general and soldiers in particular, and the guardian of the orthodox faith and defender against heresies.

Gabriel (Hebrew meaning "Strength of God") is one of God's chief messengers. He was God's messenger to Daniel to explain his vision (Dan. 8:16-26) and prophecy (Dan. 9:21-27). He foretold the birth of John the Baptist and was the messenger announcing the forthcoming birth of Christ (Luke 1:11-21).

You who see the unseen One who reveal to mankind the depths of God's mysteries, you came down with the Only-Begotten to serve his economy at his birth you were announcers to the Shepherds and to the myrrh-bearing women; you were proclaimers of the Good News of the life of the risen one; we beseech you, be our intercessor before the Lord for the purification of our sins.

Guardians of the world, the Lord's guardians of those who fear God, friends of the human race, mediators between death and resurrection, great Michael and Gabriel who stand before the all-Holy Trinity; we beseech you, be our intercessor before the Lord for the purification of our sins.
