The Cultural Committee of
St. Sarkis Church invites you to
A lecture by
Dr.Gregory Kazandjian on
Mekhitar Heratsi,
a Master Armenian Physician from Cilicia.
Sunday September 29th, 2013 following Church Services.
Mechitar Heratsi: The Master Physician of the Cilician Armenia.
Mechitar Pejeshkabed, as he was usually called, was the first notable Armenian physician of the Middle Ages. He was often compared to Hippocrates of Greece, Galen of Romans or Ibn Sina (Avicenna) of the Arabs. He knew well many languages such as Greek, Persian, Arabic, Armenian. He was the founder of Cilician Medical School, taking medicine from the then humoral (fluid) based medicine to modern medical science - based on experimentation. He pioneered medical specialties and wrote many medical texts. He stressed the importance of knowledge of anatomy on the success of treatment. He was a lexicologist, developing a lexicon for the anatomy of the eye; a pharmacist, developing medications from plants of Cilician area; a psychologist, using music and behavioral changes in disease treatment; he was a humanist, teacher and an activist. Above all however, he was the FIRST in medicine to describe the cause of inflammatory disease as "microbial" penetration in the blood or other body fluids, ushering in the concept of contagion: this was not to be brought to the forefront of European medicine until 400 years later. So today, let's get to know this Armenian physician who spoke and thought of contagion 800 years ago whose work is either barely mentioned or not mentioned at all in either the Middle-Eastern or Western medical history books.
Gregory Kazandjian, MS, DDS Periodontist (Gum and Implant Surgeon)
Director of the Periodontal Residency Hospital Program - VA Medical Center, NY, NY.
Associate Professor of Periodontics and Surgical Sciences - New York University, NY, NY.
Author of "PERIODONTICS". The first book on gum disease and treatment, in full Armenian.

Family members and a group of close friends celebrated the 80th Birthday of Mrs. Luiza Kalustian on Sunday September 22, 2013 at Vivaldi Ristorante & Ballroom, Bayside. The party was organized by her family members: her husband Varujan Kalustian and her children Mrs. Alina Kochoumian and Dr. Michael Kalustian and their families. The plan, which was carried out perfectly, was to surprise her and to show her how much she is loved and respected.
Turning 80 is a significant milestone and I know that she was very happy but a bit overwhelmed by the number of people who came to honor her on her special day.
Mrs. Luiza is a member of St. Sarkis Church Ladies Guild and the Bible Study Group of St. Sarkis Church. As a sign of her gratitude, Mrs. Luiza has donated all the gifts received on her birthday to her beloved church - St. Sarkis.

THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE
GALATIANS (6:14-18)
May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is a new creation. Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule, even to the Israel of God.
Finally, let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers. Amen.
THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MATHEW (24:30-36)
Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near at the very gates. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

Feast Of The Holy Cross Of Varak
This Sunday, September 29, is the Feast of the Holy Cross of Varak, a feast that is unique to the Armenian Church and is celebrated two weeks after the Exaltation of the Cross. After coming to Armenia, the Hripsimiantz Virgins lived near Mount Varak. They had brought with them a fragment of the True Cross. Fleeing persecution, they sought refuge on the mountain where Hripsime hid the cross among the rocks before fleeing to Vagharshapat. In 653, a hermit named Todik found the hidden cross. He followed a brilliant light that illuminated the mountain and guided him inside the church to the altar where he found the cross. The light shone for twelve days. In memory of this event, Catholicos Nerses (the Builder) established the Feast of the Holy Cross of Varak. He wrote the beautiful hymn, "By the Sign of Your All Powerful Holy Cross," (Nshanav Amenahaght Khatchit).
The Monastery of St. Nishan (Varakavank) was built on Mount Varak, which is in the southeastern region of Van. It was home to one of the greatest libraries and museums, filled with ancient and modern books and works of art. The Monastery became even more prominent when Khrimian Hayrik established a publishing house and a school there hoping to make the monastery an educational center. He founded the first newspaper to be published in historical Armenia, Artsiv Vaspurakani (The Eagle of Vaspurakan). The massacres and deportations of 1915 destroyed Hayrik's hopes and plans, as well as so much more. Varakavank was destroyed by the Turkish army on April 30, 1915, during the siege of Van.
Saint George (kevork) The Commander
This Saturday, September 28, the Armenian Church commemorates St. George (Kevork) the Commander, a third century Roman general who challenged the Emperor's persecution of Christians by publicly tearing up the Emperor's decree, and he urged others to follow his example. To this day he remains a popular saint in the Armenian Church and is the patron saint of soldiers and scouts. As in many other instances, the Armenians have given St. George an Armenian national character. The Feast of St. George is always on the Saturdaybefore the Feast of the Holy Cross of Varak that is preceded by a period of fasting. Although the fast is not connected to St. George, through the centuries it has been popularly identified as the Fast of St. George.
