Salesian Service
Day
Students handled gardening duties at the Eco Village Farm in Richmond
Students handled gardening duties at the Eco Village Farm in Richmond
On Friday, April 26, the Salesian community participated in our annual Service Day. Rather than plugging away at equations, writing essays, and analyzing historical events, the Salesian student body stepped outside of the classroom and pursued another, more hands-on, type of learning. This learning can only happen through action and public engagement.

Organized into our Faith Families-groups of about 16 students from all four grade levels-students, faculty, and staff went out to many different locations in our community to perform acts of service. The service locations included The Bay Area Rescue Mission, St. Paul's School, St. Calistus Parish, Eco Village Farm, Pinole Valley Watershed, Kennedy Grove, Emeritus Creekside Lodge, Animal Refugee Response, and Alameda Point Collaborative. Many of the groups helped these organizations by preparing meals, harvesting vegetables, planting, pruning hedges, sweeping, tutoring and playing with children and, of course, pulling LOTS of weeds. While much of the work was tough, even tedious, it highlighted some of the many needs of our community.

This school-wide event could not have taken place without the immense effort of the Faith Family student leaders, faculty and staff supervisors, front office staff, school administration, and the many parents who helped out with transportation. All parts contributed to this fruitful and unique learning experience. Many thanks to all!

22nd Annual Golf Tournament

On May 6th, 120 Salesian alumni and supporters came out to participate in the 22nd Annual Salesian Golf Tournament at the Richmond Country Club. The longstanding fundraiser helps support our student tuition assistance program. Currently, we distribute over $1.5 million in tuition assistance to over 57% of our students at Salesian.

The event featured a shotgun start, followed by an end-of-day dinner reception with a raffle and silent auction. Salesian Seniors Jabari Bird (UC Berkeley) and Anthony Bell (UCLA) each spoke on behalf of our many tuition assistance student recipients and thanked the participants for their generous support.

jabari golf tournament 2013A McDonald's All-American basketball player and honor roll student, Jabari Bird told the crowd "Choosing to go to Salesian was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I am very proud to call myself a Salesian, and promise to one day give back to my community to help other students achieve their academic goals." Anthony Bell, a 4.4 GPA student headed to UCLA in the fall spoke about Salesian's impact on him personally, "Salesian high school has allowed me to develop and grow as a student and as an individual. It's challenged me academically, intellectually, and spiritually... Thank you for donating to our futures. I am proud to be part of the Salesian family."

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
  sweeney todd arts 2013 drama

The talented Salesian High School drama department was spotlighted last month during its amazing production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. The play was performed on three separate nights to a packed house in the gymnasium. The thrilling musical garnered plenty of "oohs and aahs" and was well worth the price of admission.
