Welches Schools Weekly News
May 3, 2013

New Security Measure
On Monday May 6, the Welches Schools will take a new step to ensure the safety of our children and staff. Our main doors will be locked during school hours. If you are visiting or volunteering at the school, you'll need to ring the doorbell and be met at the door by one of our office staff. Please look for the doorbell to the right of the main doors. Thank you for your patience and support as we work to ensure the safety of our students.
ABC Auction!
Our annual Adults Benefiting Children Auction is on Saturday, May 11 at 5:30pm at the RV Village. Mark your calendar for this fun evening! If you have any great donations, please send them to the school office. What a great way to support the students of Welches!
STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK
This coming week, May 6-10, is Staff Appreciation Week. Please take time to thank your child's teachers, educational assistants, secretary or custodian. We are lucky to have a warm & caring staff - this is a good time to thank them for the good work they do! On Wednesday, our WPTCO will be providing school staff with a luncheon. If you'd like to share a dish, please contact Travis Brewster or Cheryl Gundersen.
OAKS TESTING IN FULL SWING
Students in grades 3-8 have been doing a great job at their OAKS testing. We are proud of their hard work and focus. Most students have finished their tests in Reading & Math, with some taking a second round in the coming weeks. Science tests for grades 5 & 8 will begin May 13. Please remember to support your child at home by ensuring a good night's sleep, a hearty breakfast and positive encouragement.
OUTSTANDING EDUCATORS TO BE RECOGNIZED
The Oregon Trail Education Foundation is presenting their fifteenth annual Excellence in Education Awards program.  More than 200 teachers, support staff and administrators have previously been recognized for their accomplishments. The Excellence in Education Award is designed to honor employees of the Oregon Trail School District who have made significant contributions to the lives of children.
We are proud to announce this year's winners: Dan Winans is receiving the Award for Welches Elementary School. Morgan Reed is our winner for Welches Middle School. We also have a Business Partnership Award for Kim Nylund and Timbeline Lodge. Our Cleo Award winner is Ginny Thompson. We are proud of our excellent staff and communty and hope you'll join us in congratulating them for their hard work. The Awards will be on May 9 at 7pm at the Good Shepherd Church.

Mad Science
by Abel Castaneda, 2nd grade

Mad Science is awesome. I think Mad Science is awesome because you get to take home (science projects) and you get to make (science projects) at home. I think more people should join Mad Science.
LOST & FOUND OVERFLOWING!
Please stop by the school to check for lost & found items. We have huge piles of jackets, sweatshirts and shoes in both the elementary and middle school lost & found locations. If items are not retrieved by Spring Break, they will be donated to charity.
