Summer Vacation! (or is it....)

According to a 2015 study, only 45% of American workers take all of their vacation time. Are you among the over 55% giving vacation days back to your employer?

There are health and productivity benefits to taking all of your vacation time, including:
  • lower risk of heart disease (women who take 2 vacations a year are 8 times less likely to develop heart disease than women who take a vacation once every 6 years; men who take a vacation each year are 32% less likely to die from heart disease than counterparts who do not take vacations)
  • less stress, happier (people who have more leisure activities, including vacations, report being happier, find more meaning in life and feel healthier.)
  • increases employee engagement (engaged employees are 28% more productive, and vacations allow employees to unplug, relax and come back to work energized.)
So why don't we take all of our vacation time?  Some are afraid of the million emails and general workload that will be waiting for them upon their return, others fear that taking all of their vacation will call their commitment to the job into question and still others feel that the higher up they are on the ladder, the more difficult it is to take vacations.

Over 80% of workers surveyed said they would be more likely to take time off if they felt fully supported and encouraged by their boss.

Do we have a communication problem or is this the reality?

According to this another study, employees who take 10 days or less of vacation time are less likely to have received a raise or bonus in the last 3 years than those who took 11 days or more. Use all of your vacation AND make more money!!

Taking the vacation time that you've earned improves your mental health, increases your productivity at work and will most likely improve relationships with your family and friends as well. If you've not taken all of your vacation time yet this year, get on it!
