Use Volunteer Recruitment Tools for Older Americans Month

The"Got an Hour? Give it Back" Campaign offers materials that agencies can use to advertise the campaign. Among these materials include a series of customizable postcards, which agencies can use to fill in their programs and include their organization's logo. These are available to download or order hard copies for free.

The website has been experiencing technical difficulties processing orders. The Got an Hour? Campaign apologizes to anyone that has attempted to order postcards this week. There is currently a temporary order form on the site while the technical difficulties are being address. Please use this new form to order your free postcards.

The Got an Hour? Campaign has recently added a radio PSA that can be downloaded and shared with networks, local radio stations, or included on local organization's websites. The radio ad hopes to bring new prospective volunteers to the giveitbacktoseniors.org website to search for volunteer opportunities.

There site also offers a sample press release and letter to an elected official that agencies can use to get the word out about the campaign and to drive new volunteers for Older Americans Month.

Long-Term Care Services Report

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a report entitled "Long-Term Care Services in the United States: 2013 Overview" which presents the initial results of the National Study of Long-Term Care Providers (NSLTCP). The data comes from surveys of adult day care providers, long term residential care providers, and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) records on nursing homes, home health agencies, and hospice providers. The study found that approximately eight million Americans received care services from about 58,000 paid providers in 2012, and the report breaks down the numbers of consumers utilizing various types of care providers. The report also includes information about size, ownership and staffing by region and type of care provider. In addition, it summarizes the demographics of those who use different types of care services.

Home and Community-Based Settings Transition Toolkit

On March 20, 2014, CMS shared a toolkit to assist states in complying with new requirements in the recently published home and community-based services regulations. The final Home and Community-Based Services regulations set forth new requirements for several Medicaid authorities under which states may provide home and community-based long-term services and supports

Debt Referral Process

Carolyn W. Colvin, Acting Commissioner of Social Security, has halted further referrals of debts that are 10 years old and older to the Treasury Offset Program. The Treasury Offset Program is a centralized offset program, administered by the Bureau of the Fiscal Service's Debt Management Services (DMS), to collect delinquent debts owed to federal agencies and states (including past-due child support). If any Social Security or Supplemental Security Income beneficiary believes his or her tax refund has been withheld incorrectly to recover an over-payment under this program, SSA encourages the individual to request an explanation or seek options to resolve the over-payment.  Inquiries may be directed to SSA's toll-free number, 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.  People who are deaf or hard of hearing may call SSA's toll-free TTY number, 1-800-325-0778.

Pew Internet and American Life Project

Older Adults and Technology Use

The Pew Internet Research Project released a new study on seniors and the internet. The study debunks some of the myths and gives the public a glimpse into how older adults are using technology in their lives. Technology adoption among seniors has been increasing slowly but surely. According to the report, 77% of seniors have a cell phone, 59% use the internet, and almost half have broadband at home. Yet many seniors still remain isolated from digital life. Some highlights of the study include:

  • Six in ten seniors now go online, and just under half are broadband adopters
  • Older adults face a number of hurdles to adopting new technologies
  • Physical challenges to using technology
  • Skeptical attitudes about the benefits of technology
  • Difficulties learning to use new technologies
