FROM OUR PASTORS
Lent is the six-week season during which we prepare for Easter. We invite you to consider participating in a number of events as part of your Lenten preparation this year. Our church community is offering a variety of worship, small group study, and fellowship events as a way to go a little deeper in our life of faith.
An Ash Wednesday supper and service will be held from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. on February 13 in the Seminary building. A choice of soups and breads will be provided, and people attending bring cheese or fruit to share. We'll eat together for 45 minutes, and then have a simple half hour service around our tables, ending with the traditional imposition of ashes.

February 2 is Ground Hogs Day
These songs help us celebrate my favorite holiday of the year (seriously).
(from our own Elaine Patterson)
(Does anyone know of medication for this condition?)
I'm Dreaming of the Great Groundhog
I'm dreaming of the Great Groundhog
Just like I do this time each year.
When he brings nice weather
And brings us together
To wait for him to appear.
I'm dreaming of the Great Groundhog
With every Groundhog card I write.
May Your Groundhog's Day be bright
When the Great Groundhog visits you tonight.
Groundhog Wonderland
Groundhogs hoot, are you listening?
'Neath the Sun all is glist'ning
A real warm sight we're happy tonight
Waitin' in a Groundhog wonderland.
In the field, we're watching for the Groundhog.
We've been waiting for this day all year.
Do you think that he will see his shadow?
And will we know if springtime's almost here?
Later on, while we're eating
What we got on Groundhog's Day
We'll share all our sacks
Of good Groundhog snacks
Waitin' in a Groundhog wonderland
Deck The Field
Deck the field with brown and black
Fa la la la la la la la la
See the groundhog rise before us
Fa la la la la la la la la
As we sing the groundhog chorus
Fa la la la la la la la la
Follow him as he ascends
Fa la la la la la la la la
Join with true great groundhog friends
Fa la la la la la la la la

Invitation to Participate in Lent
A church-wide study during Lent is part of our small group ministries. Lenten Study Groups will begin the week of February 18 and meet until Palm Sunday. This year we are using the book Journeying Through Lent with Luke by Nancy Koester. Weekly themes to be explored include Healing, Forgiving, Believing, Daring, Praying, and Dying and Rising. As last year, a number of different groups will be meeting at a variety of times, including a selection of afternoon, evening and weekend times. Each group will have co-leaders, including the pastors, educator and other church leaders. Many of the groups will meet in homes. Sign up through the church office or by contacting Barbara Barnes. If you could co-lead a group or could offer your home as a place to meet, let us know that too!
The AFS Potluck Supper will be Sunday, February 24 at the Seminary at 6 p.m. We'll host the international students studying at Talawanda High this year. Bring a dish to share, and enjoy good fellowship as we eat. After supper, the students will introduce themselves and speak briefly about their home countries and their experience here in Oxford. This has always been a meaningful and fun event for our church, and the students and their families have expressed thanks for the opportunity as well.
Enjoy wonderful talent and a lot of good humor at the Annual Church-Wide Talent Show on Saturday evening, March 2, at the Seminary Building. Let Dick Munson know if you'd like to share your talent. Children, teens and adults have all shared their talents at this annual show, individually or in small groups. Past acts have included everything from soccer technique demonstrations, to silly skits, to serious musical performances and poetry. Bring a potluck dish and get ready for some fun!
On Wednesday, March 6, the Membership, Fellowship, and Evangelism Committee is planning to present a first concert in a new OPC version of the Midday Music series we used to host. The events will feature local musicians. Stay tuned!
The Heritage Sunday Celebration will be March 10. Enjoy bagpipes, Celtic drum, mother and daughter Scottish dancing (for 15 minutes immediately after the service) -- and honor those who have been members for fifty years and more!
Holy Week Worship will include:
Palm/Passion Sunday, March 24, will include the dramatic reading of the story of the last week of Jesus' life in a Readers' Theatre format, as well as special music.
Maundy Thursday Supper and Communion, March 28, at the Seminary. Supper will be 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. with a service including communion around tables 6:30 - 7:10 p.m.
A Union Good Friday Service from 12:10 - 12:50 p.m. March 29, is designed so that people may come over their lunch hour. This will be an ecumenical service held in our sanctuary this year.
Watch the church bulletin, the website, Facebook and Constant Contact for more details.
May this Lent truly be a spring-time for our souls! May we enjoy and encourage each other at these special Lenten events and services so we may greet Easter with renewed faith and joy in Christ Jesus!

A BIG Broomball THANK YOU to all of the adults who volunteered at the event January 13! We had a great turnout of children and youth from multiple churches in our community and the event could not have happened without you! A special thank you to Mary Shinn for organizing all the volunteers in the absence of Christine Garton, who was healing from shoulder surgery.
Another BIG Broomball THANK YOU to all of the children and youth who participated. We'll do another broomball fundraiser next January when Goggin is available.
A final BIG Broomball THANK YOU to everyone who made a pledge. All money raised goes to the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund. At the time this announcement was written, donations were still being collected, so watch the bulletin and next month's newsletter for the total. Thank you for your support!
Thank you to Leanne Staley, Amy McGoldrick, Amy Kraushar, and Debbie DeGennaro for teaching our preschool and 2nd-5th grade Sunday School classes in January!
Sunday School teachers are needed this spring
If you can teach 2 out of 3 Sundays in a rotation, please contact Christine Garton. Preschool class teachers are also needed for one month teaching blocks. If you can teach this spring, please contact Christine Garton.
Everyone who ordered Super Bowl Subs can pick them up in the Molyneaux Lounge Sunday, February 3 immediately following worship. Didn't order a sub? Swing by to see what subs we have left over (there's usually extra) for sale. All proceeds go toward the youth mission trip to Jackson, Tennessee.
Anyone interested in helping with planning the Christian Education programming in our church is invited to become a member of the Christian Education committee!
Please contact Christine Garton if you are interested in joining this committee. Not sure you want to commit to another monthly meeting but would like to have input? The Christian Education committee meets on the first Wednesday of the month at 6:30 PM in the AV Sunday School room. Everyone is invited to attend. You can contact Christine Garton in advance to see what the specific topics for discussion will be for our next meeting. The committee would love to hear your thoughts and ideas! Our February meeting is on a different date than our regularly scheduled meetings. The February meeting will be held on February 20. Hope to see you there!
The Christian Education committee thanks Roberta Crain and Becky Quay for multiple years of service to the committee. Both are retiring from the committee after 20+ years of faithful service. Becky will continue to be our Sunday School Superintendent. The Christian Education committee also thanks elder Greg Hughes for serving on our committee for the last 6 years. Greg has just completed his rotation on session.
The Souper Bowl of Caring is Sunday, February 3! Each year on Super Bowl Sunday youth in our congregation stand at the entrances to our sanctuary with soup pots in hand after worship to collect donations for those in our community who do not have enough to eat. Last year we collected $333. Let's see if we can beat that total this year! All money raised goes to the Oxford Community Choice Food Pantry. Our congregation collects dry goods for the OCC Food Pantry year-round, so the youth focus on monetary donations. Thank you in advance for your generosity!
Youth volunteers needed to help with the Souper Bowl of Caring on Sunday, Feb. 3 immediately following worship. This will only take 10-15 minutes. If you can help by holding a soup pot to collect donations at one of the entrances to the sanctuary, please contact Christine Garton. 4-6 youth are needed.
Our college student Bible Study will resume on Sunday, February 10. We'll meet in the AV Sunday School room upstairs immediately following worship. Lunch will be provided. We are continuing our study about Hearing God's Call. If you did not attend last fall, come join us anyway! You won't be lost or "behind." Spring meeting dates are Feb. 10, Feb. 24, Mar. 3, Mar. 24, Apr. 7 & Apr. 21. Come to the ones you can. Hope to see you there!
Clear containers needed for Sunday School supply storage. Christine is looking for smaller, food-sized container to store smaller, loose items in the art classroom. Chinese food containers or any other see-through containers are needed. Please drop containers off on the bench outside Christine Garton's office. Thank you in advance! Watch the newsletter and bulletin for spring clean-up dates for our Sunday School classes and Supply Room.
Online Bible Study. Online topic study. Online faith chat. Online message board for discussion with other church members. If any of these sound interesting to you, please contact Christine Garton. She's exploring options for virtual studies and other forms of electronic study with our congregation. She wants to know your thoughts, suggestions, apps or websites you'd like to explore with others at church, and anything else you'd like to talk about regarding how to best use electronic resources to nurture and enrich your faith journey. Also, if you're on Pinterest (or would be willing to join), would you be interested in church boards that have suggestions for faith resources to use personally or with your family, as well as uplifting faith and scripture quotes and any other topics that might be helpful? If so, please contact Christine Garton.
All youth in grades 6-12 and their parents, guardians, and grandparents are invited to a Youth and Family lunch on Sunday, February 17 immediately following worship in the Geneva Room. Younger siblings are invited to lunch as well. Afterward, they will go to the AV room for a DVD while the youth and adults have a casual discussion with the people at their table about how our church can best support and nurture youth and their families. We promise to finish by 12:15 PM! Reservations are not required; however, since we do have to provide lunch, it would be helpful if you e-mail Christine Garton with a total number who plan to attend. If you don't, please show up anyway! The Christian Education Committee, Youth Intern Jenn Burns and I will be there and want to hear your thoughts and suggestions. Please contact Christine Garton with any questions. Hope to see you there!
