Happy Fall Everyone!
First of all, congratulations to everyone who just finished Ironman Hawaii, and especially to our very own D3 Coach Simon Butterworth, who was 2nd in his AG. What a great performance Simon, we are very proud of you!
Many of you have either wrapped up your season or you will be soon with a race or two left on the calendar. I'm excited to travel to AZ next month and volunteer on race day and support our athletes at Ironman Arizona.
I've been getting a lot of emails this month that start with, "My last race was in September, and my next race is in June, what do I do?" Well, I can tell you from personal experience, you need to take a break, and you need to mentally and physically get ready to get back at it, when the time is right. My objective in the winter is to come out of my training time as fit as I was when my season ended. If I am running 7:00 pace for my 5ks in September, then hopefully I am running that fast come March as well. I think it's important to lose fitness in the winter, in order for the body to replenish and rejuvenate, but at the same time, I don't want to go too far the other way that it takes me three months getting back to where I was.
One of the keys to working on your weakness is take a block of time in the winter and do exactly this. Swim like a swimmer, run like a runner and bike like a biker. I'll write more about this next month, but if you've read my chapter in the USAT Complete Triathlon Guide, you already have an idea of what I'm talking about.
This month's articles feature Coach Dave Sheanin on Off Season Swim Drills. Our 2nd article is from one of our D3 Athletes, Tea Chand. She's a dedicated athlete, awesome Mom, tireless business owner and just about the most loyal person you could ever meet! When I read how deep her loyalty runs, it impresses me even more and makes me that much more proud to coach her.
In addition, this month congratulate our MIX D3 Athlete of the Month Coach Julia Purrington. Julia is the first 2x winner of the D3 Athlete of the Month, so special congratulations to her. Please take a moment to read Coach Julia's story and see how far she's come back after a terrible bike accident. She's an inspiration to all of us!
