Kirkwood High School Ranks #3 in State

by U.S. News and World Report

The U.S. News and World Report released their 2013 "Best High Schools" list of top-ranked Missouri schools today.  Kirkwood High School was ranked No. 3 on the list.  This is up from the No. 6 spot in the 2012 rankings.

The annual publication of more than 21,000 public high schools includes school-specific data on enrollment, ethnicity, location, school type and results of Advanced Placement and state assessment proficiency tests.  Using some of this data and a comprehensive methodology, the schools were given a college readiness index score, with the top scoring 4,805 schools receiving a gold, silver or bronze medal.  Kirkwood High School received a gold medal.

"Kirkwood High School is extremely excited to be ranked the #3 high school in the state of Missouri by U.S. News and World Report.  As we prepare for the end of the year assessments and AP exams, it is nice to hear that all of the dedication and hard work by the students and staff is being recognized locally and nationally," said Dr. Mike Havener, principal KHS.

Kirkwood Public Library
The Kirkwood Public Library and Local Businesses - An Enduring Partnership

According to A History of Kirkwood, by June Wilkinson Dahl, interest in Kirkwood having a library of its own became community-wide in about 1922. In 1924, residents were asked to donate books and shelf space was made available at City Hall.

There was a need for bookcases but the library had no money. Fortunately, many Kirkwood businesses came to the rescue. A lumber company donated lumber for the shelves and bookcases, a sash and door company contributed mill work, another company contributed book mending materials. Staining, painting, and carpentry work was also volunteered by local businesses.

On May 10, 1924 the library opened and 38 books were issued that first day. During those early years, it was solely staffed by volunteers but soon it became obvious a librarian needed to be employed. Again, local businesses stepped forward to assist.

Creating Connections - April 2013

by Barb Byerly, BJB Creative Services

There have been two versions of the classic movie, "Father of the Bride." In the latest, Steve Martin starred as the father and Elizabeth Taylor played the part of the bride in the first version. Well, Steve and Liz can move over, because in real life the father of the bride was Kirkwood Police Chief Jack Plummer and he was beaming with happiness and pride as he walked the bride, his daughter Nicci, down the aisle last fall during her outdoor wedding in Charleston, South Carolina.

Nicci, looking even more beautiful than a movie star, kept her eyes focused on the groom, Ben Warr. The mother of the bride, lovely Cindy Plummer, and a boodle of Kirkwood area friends were in attendance for the nuptials.

Nicci and Ben met in Law School at Washington U. After graduation, they dated long distance when she moved to KC to work for Federal Judge Dwayne Benton as a law clerk for the Federal Appeals Court.

"My ad in the Chamber Directory is by far the most effective use of my advertising dollars each year! I receive approximately 4 - 6 new clients each year." - Robert W. Miller, Attorney at Law

"There are a few reasons Busy Bees advertises in the Chamber directory. One, we frequently get business because we're listed there. Two, we would hate it if someone picked up the directory looking for "Embroidery" or "Promotional Products" and picked a competitor because their directory identity was more pronounced than ours!" - David and Beverly Collin, Busy Bees Embroidery

Boardroom Rental
Testimonial:  "As a frequent user of the Chamber Boardroom, I find it is a great value as well as an effective use of space.  Rather than commit a fairly large space to just infrequent use, I get to use a very well equipped room, in a very convenient location at a reasonable charge.  What more does one need? A simple, clean business decision."
