New grant established to honor Barbara Lazarus ('63)
 |
| |
Left to right: Mary Ann "Twiggy" Lazarus ('68); grant recipient Sruti Ekkirala ('17); Uni Science teacher Sharlene Denos, and William "Billy" Lazarus ('66.) Richard ("Richy") Lazarus, '71, also attended the school visit by teleconference.

The University of Illinois Laboratory High School graduating classes of 1961, 1962 and 1963 have established The Barbara Lazarus '63 Memorial Fund to encourage, facilitate and support girls studying science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) at the secondary level.
George Frampton '61 and his sister Mary Louise Frampton '63 along with the Classes of 1961 and 1963 raised the money to name a fund in Lazarus' memory.
Barbara was the daughter of a University of Illinois physics professor, and as a college career counselor, she encouraged young women to enter STEM fields. The award recognizes and funds a female student's worthy scientific undertaking. The first winner is Sruti Ekkirala, who will study environmental sustainability in a summer workshop.

Annual Uni High Gala
Over 125 people joined the Provost, student speakers Chris Bauer and Ellen Rispoli, and Jeff Helfrich, '99, president of the new Alumni Association, at the fifth annual Gala last weekend. The event honored major donors in the last year; one of our three Nobel Prize recipients, James Tobin; and alumni awardees of the Social Studies award named for Professor Tobin.
Engineering News
Teachers continue to develop the engineering aspect of Uni's science curriculum. Dr. Denos arranged a collaboration with Clark-Lindsey Retirement Home in which students worked closely with residents to develop solutions to support independent living. Read more here.
The Uni High Makers (Harmen Alleyne, Nina Galvez, Kevin Grosman, Jacob Minin, Lucia Lombardi, and Adam Rebei) had a great time at the Champaign- Urbana Make-A-Thon early this month, where they won second place in the Beginner category for their silicon smart-shoe insert designed to correct foot injuries in runners and walkers.
Please also congratulate the Uni High members of the local Ctrl-Z robotics team. The team won the Judges Award at the First Robotics Competition in Chicago. We are very proud of them and hope to get a live demo of this year's robot in Uni Gym later this semester.
Athletics
Girls soccer is off to a great start with four wins and two losses. They defeated Champaign Central for the first time ever to start the season.
Girls and boys track is in full swing. Individuals and relays have set new school records already this season.
Boys tennis is 2-0 in dual matches with wins over Urbana High School and Saint Thomas More.
