Record number of jobs in 2012

Dear Friend,

The number of jobs in the Pittsburgh region last year totaled 1,158,600, an increase of 13,700 jobs compared to 2011. This figure not only exceeded pre-recession numbers but was a new, all-time record number of jobs in the Pittsburgh region. All of our comparison regions also saw increases year-over-year.

The total nonfarm job figure for January 2013 in the Pittsburgh region was 1,137,300, and the year-over-year job growth rate was 0.6 percent, which was below the benchmark average of 1.5 percent. Charlotte had the highest year-over-year job growth rate at 3.3 percent. Sectors that are doing well include financial activities (up 2.4 percent) and professional and business services (up 2.2 percent). Government jobs in the region declined 2.6 percent year-over-year.
