Summer's here ... so
let's get ready for school!

In neighborhoods across the city, you can hear the joyful rumbling of thousands of children cheering the end of another school year. Summer's here! Yay! Time for kiddos to hop on a bicycle, play ball, relax, swim.

And while they're playing ... we're thinking about school starting! Why?

Because Family Service is Invested in Kids' Success

Our far-reaching early childhood education program, Head Start, supports the holistic development of pre-school children from low-income families, and helps the children and their families with school-readiness, health, nutrition and other services. Head Start encourages parents to engage in their children's education and lifts children out of poverty into lives of productivity. With this acclaimed curriculum, Family Service impacts over 2,000 children and families every year. With such an enormous impact, we're already thinking about fall programming.
And Now, Early Head Start

Child Care Partnerships program.
In May, we launched the first of four brand-new Early Head Start Child Care Partnership sites that will be open by fall 2015. This invites children ages 0 to 36 months from low-income families to a school readiness program that provides early continuous, intensive and comprehensive child development and family support services to enhance the physical, social, emotional and intellectual development of children. Partnering with center-based and family child care providers, the Early Head Start Child Care Partnership expands the availability of quality early education for infants and children.

4 New Sites
Our first site opened May 4 in partnership with the YMCA in a child-friendly, safe environment on the Haven for Hope campus with 23 children. Additional classrooms will open at this site in the fall to reach a total of 54 children. By the fall semester, three sites will open on Northside Independent School District campuses at Lackland Village, Boone Elementary and The Growing Tree. The four sites will serve 140 children.

And That's a Magical Thing

Watching little minds spark with excitement over learning is a beautiful, magical thing to behold. Making sure they are healthy, nourished, nurtured and socialized with others is a joy and Family Service is delighted to be part of such an important educational project. Early Head Start and Head Start are revolutionizing learning for underserved children and we are energized by the expansion of our services for ages 0-3.

Khakis 4 Kids
While kids are enjoying their summer vacation, we're also ensuring other aspects of their success when the school year begins anew. Khakis for Kids is in its 17th year of collecting school uniforms so students can go back to school looking fresh, fashionable and eager to learn. You can help by purchasing uniforms at Old Navy, giving cash gifts to Family Service's Khakis for Kids program, and by donating new and gently-used uniforms at Cowboy Cleaners or Family Service offices.
A BIG thank you to Cowboy Cleaners!

Ancira auto dealerships partner with us by conducting a vigorous backpack drive. We distribute the new backpacks they collect to families in need - another way to give children a positive start when the school year begins.
