Hadoop
Hadoop on Scality RING - Tech Insight Paper

In previous reports we have outlined the issues we believe enterprise IT administrators have with implementing Hadoop within production applications environments-issues that are slowing the pace of Hadoop adoption within enterprise IT. Overcoming the issues is a critical qualifier for Hadoop adoption in the enterprise where business users may come to depend on Hadoop-based application availability. In addition, they know that, at some point, they will have to fit Hadoop into their data governance policies and practices. This will happen if and when IT administrators feel comfortable standing behind Hadoop application availability and integrating it into existing management processes and IT infrastructure.

Defining storage virtualization - Storage Soup blog
By Randy Kerns

Randy

The term storage virtualization has been with us since 1999, and the concept continues with new product offerings that are variations of the original.

The longevity of storage virtualization in a high tech world where new ideas gain a foothold rapidly is a testament to the value that storage virtualization delivers. But there are many descriptions for storage virtualization based on the variety of products and the desire of vendor marketing to distinguish their products. A quick review of what is encompassed by the general phrase "storage virtualization" might be useful to characterize these offerings and the context in which they are typically used.

ViprEMC ViPR Product Brief now available

EMC ViPR is a solution implemented as software to not only abstract attached storage resources but also provide a common set of data services. EMC calls ViPR with the abstraction of storage and addition of data services "Software Defined Storage".   A key capability of ViPR is the separation of the control of storage from the data access function.

Protocol
It's not about the Protocol
By Russ Fellows

Russ Fellows
To devoted followers, a protocol is akin to religion, something that requires devotion and defense at all costs. I tend to be more agnostic, particularly where protocols are involved.  The real question is not what protocol to use, but rather what options provide the best choices for a particular environment?
