Ford Family Foundation Scholarship Application goes live November 1

The application for Ford Family Foundation Scholarships will be available beginning November 1 via the Oregon Student Access Commission (OSAC) at: https://app.oregonstudentaid.gov/

While many are aware of our Ford Scholars program targeting "traditional" college students, we'd also like to remind folks of the programs available for individuals over the age of 25 beginning or returning to college (Ford Restart) and for single parents who are the head of household (Ford Opportunity).

If communities are interested in learning more about a particular scholarship program, we are happy to work with them to find a Scholar from their town to speak to potential applicants.  Just let the Ford Scholarships office know by contacting: toll free 877-864-2872, local 541-485-6211, or fordscholarships@tfff.org.

New Federal Grant Specialists-in-Training Selected

Beginning in 2009, the Ford Institute for Community Building undertook a number of studies to determine the degree to which rural communities in Oregon received their fair share of federal grant funds.  To a significant extent, rural communities in Oregon do not fare well or equitably in the quest for federal assistance.  These findings are attributable, in part, to the absence of qualified grant professionals.  To this end, the Ford Institute for Community Building is working with rural stakeholders to develop the capacity of rural communities, and their leaders and nonprofit organizations, with an emphasis on successful and collaborative federal grant seeking.

To accomplish these ends, the Ford Institute for Community Building is continuing partnership with Kathy R. Ingram, Ph.D., Inc., who is nationally certified by the Grant Professional Certification Institute.   Kathy will once again be sharing her expertise in federal grantsmanship with a select cohort of Federal Grant Specialists-in-Training.  Individuals selected, based on individual qualifications and geographic distribution receive comprehensive training and stipend support.  Following an application process and interviews, the following individuals were selected:

  • Lyn Craig - Wallowa and Wheeler County
  • Elaine Eisenbraun - Grant County
  • Kathleen Fitzpatrick - Wasco County
  • Timothy Hoone - Curry County

The Ford Family Foundation has placed a priority on supporting efforts that assist rural children to be kindergarten ready.  So in addition, the following two candidates were selected based on their professional focus in early childhood development:
  • Connie Hector - Douglas County
  • Gwen Soderberg-Chase - Douglas County

Congratulations and best wishes to these dynamic and motivated community leaders!

Rural Rocks Revolution

Rural Rocks is a concept developed by Seven13studios in  Roseburg, Oregon as a way to playfully illustrate, and celebrate good design in a small community.  They will be asking for your help in determining the imagery that best represents the message across the state.

By taking a light hearted approach to recognizing the multitude of opportunities and abundant goodness of rural communities, they are looking to develop a movement that everyone can identify with.

The Ford Institute will be sending a very simple survey to you  soon with choices for a Rural Rocks image design.  We hope it brings a smile to your face and is a reminder of why we've chosen to live in and love our small towns.  For a sneak peek, we invite you to check out www.Rural-Rocks.com.

Strategies to Recruit Alumni and

Young  Families to Your Community

Beginning in October, the Center for Rural Entrepreneurship and the Heartland Center for Leadership Development will co-host a three-part webinar series to help rural leaders address youth out-migration through attracting alumni and young families. This webinar series will incorporate the extensive experience of both organizations in working with young people and community leaders to revitalize rural communities. It also builds upon input gathered from over 40,000 young people across rural America about what motivates them to want to return to rural communities.

In three one-hour sessions, co-hosts Milan Wall of the Heartland Center and Craig Schroeder of the Center for Rural Entrepreneurship will guide you through the process of identifying your target audience in relation to your community's strongest assets, crafting a compelling message and brand to attract new residents and building a game plan for recruiting alumni and young families to your community. Upon completion of this series, you will have the knowledge and tools needed to move forward with implementing your action plan.

  • October 2, 2013: Tying Assets to Targets
  • October 23, 2013: Crafting Your Message
  • November 13, 2013: Building a Winning Game Plan

The cost for the webinar series is $189. For more information or to register click here.
