When to Use Testimonials and When to Use Reviews to Market Your Practice

A new dental client asked me, "Should I be getting patient testimonials or patient reviews?" Good question. Online reviews play a big part in people's buying decisions and you shouldn't underestimate the impact they have. I experienced it first-hand last spring when we decided to take our kids to play putt putt. We picked a place because of the reviews others posted. It cost me $18 for putt putt, and was based entirely on their reviews. $18 for putt putt or $18,000 for a treatment plan, it doesn't matter; people are influenced by social proof.

So, testimonials or reviews? Testimonials are reviews. The difference is in the
application. A review is the term for the testimonial online. A patient testimonial is what your patients say to you about you. A review online, however, are mostly dull and boring and don't have any real value to helping you promote your practice or influence them, like we were influenced.

A great testimonial (or review) is driven by emotion. People are more likely to post a bad review from a horrible experience rather than a good review from great service. Why? The Internet is a place for society to get together. I'm now sitting in a McDonalds listening to conversations around me complaining about something that happened to them. They're consoling one another, and people do the same online on a much more wide-reaching scale. 97% of society is made up of negative thinkers seeking justification for feeling so. The Internet offers them a medium upon which they can gripe. People are less likely to post positive reviews because they expect great service, as they should.

Great patient reviews are created. In my next issue I will give you some tips on how to ask for a testimonial/review. Don't Let Fear Ground You: What Really Happens If the Internet Goes Down

In the past two weeks I've addressed the fear, uncertainty, and doubt spread from a sales representative selling traditional, client-server software. If you remember, I was quite put out by the primeval arguments presented by this sales representative. Friends, it's 2015! Why are we still poo-pooing the cloud?

This week I'll address the question of access: What happens if the Internet goes down?

First, how often does this happen? I live in a somewhat suburban-rural area. They still drive cattle up the canyon next to my home every spring. (On that day my car is the one with manure splashed on the side.) I can't remember the last time my Internet went down. If things are different in your neck of the woods, then look for an alternative provider. If there's little to no other options, then I've got nothing for you. But, for the vast majority of the country, spotty Internet service is becoming increasingly less of an issue.

Second, if your Internet goes down trucks are rolling to fix the problem. It's not just your business that is down, but a lot of businesses are down and you can bet people are scrambling to resume service. Internet is like a utility and lots of dollars are spent to keep it up and running. But again, chances are that your Internet rarely goes down--I wonder if your server crashes more often.

And consider this: When your server goes down the only person who cares is you! Trucks are NOT rolling to fix the problem. Your IT pro will surely do their best to get to your practice when they can.

Third, if your Internet goes down you can turn to a hotspot solution to get you through until service is restored. Talk to your IT pro about redundant Internet service plans.
