I recently had a conversation with a doctor who lost his practice to fire in 2011. His practice, the sole occupant of a beautiful New England building, burned to the ground. All was lost. Fortunately he had data backup tapes at his home, and after two to three weeks of hassle and frustration was finally able to restore his data. (I won't comment on the potential HIPAA risks with keeping backup tapes at home.)

When I questioned this good doctor about cloud-based dental software he took the time to explain that doctors are wary of the cloud, that doctors are comforted by having that server in the broom closed with the green light blinking; it makes them feel good. He went on to say that their data on the cloud is scary.

Friends, let's not be scared. Let's instead realize that we're already on the cloud and we've been on the cloud for many years. All of our banking information is on the cloud. All of our purchasing history is on the cloud. All of our socializing is on the cloud. When you open your laptop or turn on your tablet most of your activities are on the cloud.

Let me tell you what is holding the profession down: FUD. FUD is an acronym for Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt. As a side note, FUD is contagious, and it's spread easily from one office to the next by big companies protecting their cash cows. But's that a different story. Our fear of the cloud and all the bad things that can possibly go wrong is based on emotion, rather than logic. With a little education most doctors change their tune. None of your fears, neither your uncertainty, and neither your doubt, can be substantiated. When you have all the facts in front of you the cloud makes more sense for your practice.
