Why the Web?
Reason #155
You've Never Seen a Sexier Chart

My friends, it is not uncommon for a doctor to comment on how great our odontogram looks. In fact, on one occasion a doctor said to me "that is the sexiest odontogram I have ever seen!"

Never would I have thought of putting these two words together: sexy and odontogram. But the doctor is right! There's not another chart out there that comes close to reshaping and re-imagining what an odontogram can be.

I believe that a web platform frees a considerable amount of creativity from a development point of view. Where as client-server interface design is so oriented to drop down menus and windows, the web let's you explore different ways to present information.

The Curve Dental chart is certainly a great example of doing things differently. The teeth actually look like teeth (what a novel idea) and the manner in which one charts is unique.

Classic Dental Jokes

A young man saw an elderly couple sitting down to lunch at McDonald's. He noticed that they had ordered one meal,

and an extra drink cup. As he watched, the gentleman carefully divided the hamburger in half, then counted out the

fries, one for him, one for her, until each had half of them. Then he poured half of the soft drink into the extra

cup and set that in front of his wife. The old man then began to eat, and his wife sat watching, with her hands

folded in her lap.The young man decided to ask if they would allow him to purchase another meal for them so that

they didn't have to split theirs. The old gentleman said, "Oh no. We've been married 50 years, and everything has

always been and will always be shared, 50/50." The young man then asked the wife if she was going to eat, and she

replied... "Not yet...It's his turn with the teeth!"

How to Build a Team that Works
Cathy Jameson, CEO Jameson Management
Cathy Jameson, PhD
Power Thought: Jameson Management

A team that simply gets the work done is quite different from a team that is cohesively and positively working together toward a shared set of goals. Without dynamic, motivated, supportive employees, a practice cannot thrive to its full potential.

Employers must: (1) continuously acknowledge the value of team members to the organization, (2) make sure that the organization/ practice holds "opportunity for development", and (3) create an environment where staying with the organization/practice is mutually beneficial for both the employer and the employee.

The success of each person's role within the practice is dependent on each person's willingness and ability to perform consistently well. How do you get and keep good people?

  1.  Establish minimum standards for excellence in each position in the practice, and stand behind your commitment to that excellence.
  2. Be unwilling to hire anyone who does not meet your standards-even if this means waiting. Hiring slowly and hiring right is far better than hiring too quickly in order to fill a position.
  3.  Provide excellent education for each team member on a continuous basis. Skill level must continually be developed. The ever-progressive movement in dentistry requires constant training/coaching/ and continuing education.
  4.  Establish an equitable and motivational compensation package-one that is competitive in today's work environment. Dentistry must be competitive with major corporations-which can be a problem. Your careful evaluation and attention to this aspect of your practice becomes critical.

Even if your team members love you, they may take what looks like a better offer. They may not feel that they have a choice as they consider what's best for their family. Every time you lose a quality team member, it costs you well more than $15,000 - lost productivity leading up to departure, costs of locating and hiring a new person, and the time and money invested in training. If someone is deserving of a raise, consider this. The alternative-losing them-may be much more costly.

Tuesday, June 18, 2013 · 6:00 pm MDT

It's important for every dentist and their team to understand how the cloud can make their practice more efficient, more resilient to business disruptions, and more productive. And once they see how the cloud can benefit their practice it's key they know who can help them move to the cloud.

In this unique webinar, a panel of cloud experts will openly discuss the advantages, benefits of the cloud and what pitfalls to avoid. There may be some minor disagreements among the experts, but they'll all readily agree the cloud is today's standard platform.

What you'll learn:
  • What benefits the cloud brings to the dental practice and how to get there
  • Why the cloud is a natural fit for collaboration between your practice and specialists
  • How the cloud will impact internal processes and save you time and money
  • How to work with your IT pro to move to the cloud
  • How the cloud is impacted by HIPAA and other privacy legislation

All attendees will have the opportunity to present questions and have them discussed among the panel.

Instinctive Greatness
Katherine Eitel
Katherine Eitel
Power Thought: Katherine Eitel and Associates

For the first decade of my career as a practice coach, I gave my client office teams "scripts" for everything from phone calls to post-op instructions. Until I noticed on every subsequent visit, they were still doing basically what they had always been doing... and what came natural to them. Eventually, I made the shift from scripts to communication templates along with strong encouragement to be fully who they were within the template... and everything changed. Bottom line: People began to shine and results significantly improved.

Whether in person or on the phone, people sense genuineness and sincerity. They recognize authenticity and they KNOW when someone is reading to them from a script. Learn and commit to a communication template for the task you are trying to master. Then greet every interaction with the intention of being fully present, confident in your ability to shift when necessary, and be genuinely compassionate with every patient or co-worker. Trusting and being guided by our internal guidance system allows for a full and rich experience for both parties. If you are in touch with this higher level of consciousness and presence, you'll instinctively know when to slow down, speed up, soften your approach or close the sale.

In other words, your instinctive greatness can now guide you within your template and create a bond that no competitor can break with the "deal of the day."
