Oakcliff is Up to Bat at the Grand Slam!

September 2, 2014
Greetings!

Twelve International teams are making their way to Oyster Bay for the Oakcliff International. Most are arriving this evening and lucky for them, they will be able to stay in the brand new bunkhouse ... with air conditioning.

Just a heads up, racing for the International may go past 5 o'clock on Thursday, so if we once again have overwhelming turn out,  people that sign up for classic sailing may be placed on a spectator boat to watch both the match racing and classic sailing.

One last note looking forward to next weekend please buy your tickets for the MeadowWalk. Tickets are limited and this is a one time deal. No second chances next year.

Oakcliff International Hits a Grand Slam

The biggest match racing event of the year is finally here.  Follow all of the action on line or come out and watch in person.

The Oakcliff International, a Grade 2 match race, will truly be an international event with teams from Great Britain, France, Switzerland, New Zealand, Australia, United States, and Singapore. It is the fourth and final stop on the USA Grand Slam Series.

Ten of the teams are ranked in the top 50, and this is the most competitive group of skippers the International has ever seen. The competitors will provide top notch exhilarating racing. If you would like to be a spectator, please register here. The spectator boat will be operating on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Temptation's Vineyard Race Team Poses for a Photo Before the Start
Temptation Ventures to the Vineyard

After two long months in Newport, Temptation returned to Long Island Sound to compete in the Vineyard Race this weekend.

Over twenty-four hours of racing, the Temptation crew sailed almost constantly on rhum line. The beautiful conditions with plenty of breeze and sunny skies was very pleasant but didn't allow for a lot of tactical moves.

For a few team members (and future acorns), it was their first experience with big boat racing, so they had to learn proper on board communication techniques.  Coaches Andrew "OD" O'Donnell and "The Vlad" worked hard to share their unique talents.  It was actually good for OD and Vlad and the more experienced sailors as they were forced to talk about their next moves and what would happen next on the course. Full anticipation and communication is a key component of all top teams.

The crew members also worked smoothly as a team through several sail changes, using everything from a code zero to a jib top. Cross-overs are super important and unique to each boat.  This group got to experiment and learn and tweak the sail combos to figure out where the unique cross-overs are for Temptation.  That is all part of the fun.

Further along the dock, we also had Oakcliff Grads Seth Cooley, Ervin Grove, Collin Leon, and Jeff MacFarlane competing in the event.

Out of the three boats, Jeff MacFarlane and Collin Leon were the most successful after placing 3rd in their fleet. Somehow Jeff managed to still sail in the race after getting married the previous weekend.. He must have gotten really lucky! Congrats to the couple!

Sail in to the Bunkhouse

After several months of Dawn's hard work and many donations from the Oakcliff community, we finally received the Certificate of Occupancy for the bunkhouse on Friday. We are really excited to offer traveling sailors the opportunity to stay here at Oakcliff and enjoy all the amenities that we have to offer.

Thankfully, it has been completed for the Oakcliff International, so all the international competitors will have a nice place to relax and enjoy off of the water.

Although construction is completed, Oakcliff is still seeking donations to cover the cost of the construction. If you would like to make a donation and leave your legacy, please call Dawn at (516) 802-0368 or click here.

Sincerely,
