National Champions Crowned, Champagne up for Grabs!

August 26, 2014
Greetings!

The myth that Oyster Bay has no wind was smashed when the 49er, 49erFX, and NACRA 17 National Championship racers experienced a solid 10-15 knots for all 3 days of the event.  PRO Liz Shaw set a demanding schedule with 13 races. The judges were an august group, and the sponsors, Heron Financial and Gill, and volunteers helped to make this a spectacular event.

Speaking of sponsors, enter to win Heron Financial's champagne prize NOW. Entries close Friday at 10am and the winner will be announced immediately after.

Also, T2P just released their wrap-up show for the event. Please click here to watch the video and share it with your friends and family!

Read on for more details but for sure you will want to sign up for the Meadow Walk Fundraiser September 13. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity... and it helps Oakcliff.

 Sailors Feel the Heat

Oakcliff's 24-strong fleet and facilities took the pressure off many of these high performance teams, because they were able to charter boats and sails and take full advantage of the multifaceted amenities from gyms to housing.

Condensed racing areas is trending in Olympic sailing as more arena-type venues pop up and Cold Spring Harbor was perfect for this.  Another innovation at this event was the umpired medal race.   This quick, tight racing with umpiring had many of the top sailors asking to come back and train more at Oakcliff, specifically in  match racing.  We said SURE!

Those who already knew the secrets of Oakcliff; Acorns  David Hein and Joe Bello sailed strong furthermore, Sophia Schultz, Michael Sabourin, Andrew Person and Harry Schmidt had impressive finishes against the talented competition including teams from the US Sailing Sailing Team Sperry Top-Sider and US Sailing Development team.

Congratulations to National Champions:  John Casey and Sarah Newberry NACRA, Brad Funk and Trevor Burd 49er, Wade Wddell and Ian MacDiarmid 49er FX.

Big THANK YOU to Heron Financial Group for providing live coverage of the event through T2P.tv and Gill for sponsoring prizes for the event. Please share T2P's video with your friends and family, and it is not too late to sign up for the champagne raffle.

Two of the Match 40's Masts Enjoying the Sunset over the Sound
Match 40s Explore the Waters of the Sound

Oakcliff has lent 7 Match 40s to the Knickerbocker Cup for the past 4 years. On Saturday, Manhasset Bay YC was  towing 4 boats to their club, however two never made it to the race.

When dealing with boats, there are always multiple things that can go wrong and unfortunately many did. Just one of the problems was that with open transoms, it is essential for Match 40s to have the scuppers open while sailing and under tow. This weekend, Manhasset Bay Yacht Club learned what happens when the scuppers are not open. During the tow, Match 40 #6 very slowly filled with water due to closed scuppers.  Making matters worse, as #6 sank, #3 drifted in and got her bow caught under #6's spreaders. The two boats became inseparable and both boats sank.

Sunday was an incredibly long day of salvage. With two Tow BoatUS teams, plus our people we attached over 10,000 pounds of float bags to raise them to the surface. See the video to see the speed that they come up once they get out of the mud.

We then slowly towed the swamped boats to the shallow water in front of Webb Institute and used 4 crash pumps while we were also standing in the cockpits using anything we could to slow the water coming in as we pumped the water out.  We began at 9am and finished at 1am, cold and exhausted.  Monday's day off was canceled and we are all hands on deck to repair the boats in time for our Grade 2 International.  Thank God we have a good team here that can pull together and pull off miracles. If Dawn had the funding, she would give the team big bonuses!

We also have the Knickerbocker Cup, fixing the damage on the Match 40s, Oakcliff International, Vineyard Race, and IRC Regatta coming up. We are asking for some of our regular sailors to step up and act as coaches/skippers on these night. It is time to show off what you have learned! Making Connections on the Water

Acorn Kat Shiber (L) visited fellow Acorn Kate Bjerregaard (R) in Bristol, RI. Coincidentally the Herreshoff Classic Regatta was on as well.  They decided to check out the classic yacht action and bumped into  SapGrad Seth Cooley who is currently in Newport doing very well at Southern Spars.

Seth mentioned that a Cat boat, Mugsy, was in need of a crew. Kat, being the least shy of all of our Acorns, decided to talk to the owner and got herself a ride. Kat and the Mugsy crew ended up winning! "Oakcliff gave me the ability make connections I need to succeed in the sport of sailing," said Kat. Overall, she had a great experience and cannot wait to make more connections on the water!

Congrats Chris and Chris and Austin!

Chris Kennedy, Chris Poole, and Acorn Austin Colpaert gave awesome performances at the Detroit Cup this weekend. Chris Poole's Riptide Racing with regular tactician Chis Kennedy placed 2nd. Ryan Hope of Sint Maarten rounded out their team.  Riptide Racing had a tough round robin but pulled through in the end.  They now need to bottle that magic and take it forward to the Knickerbocker and Oakcliff International.

Austin's team, Rowdy Racing, won the round robin, but they experienced a few mistakes in the semi finals and placed 4th. Congrats to both teams! Also, HAPPY 18th BIRTHDAY to Austin!
