Greetings!
As the end of summer is upon us, Oakcliff teams are still very busy sailing. After the Temptation crew returned from a successful NYYC cruise on Sunday, they quickly shipped out again to deliver the Farr 47 to Newport with a stop in Nantucket on the way. As the 47 leaves Nantucket, Dawn will arrive to sail in the ProAm regatta. It will be a busy week for our team!
Just a heads up, the Combined Grade 5 is CANCELLED for TONIGHT due to extreme rain and wind. A supporter from Detroit reported they had 14' of water on the expressways. That's headed here!

Dawn at the Pro Am Regatta in Nantucket Last Summer
|
Dawn Returns to ProAm Regatta
Dawn is off again! This time to Nantucket for their ProAm Regatta, which raises funds for Nantucket Community Sailing and is a part of Nantucket Race Week.
Other pros include Dave Ullman, Josh Adams, and Robbie Doyle. The racing is surprisingly physical, and the social schedule is demanding. However, Dawn will still find time to talk about Oakcliff, so be careful since Dawn has a good track record of recruiting saplings at this event.

The Temptation Crew is all Smiles After Placing First
|
Temptation Cruises to 1st Overall
Temptation won the Squadron Run Trophy after placing 1st overall in their class and defeating other successful programs Spookie, a Carkeek 40, and Christopher Dragon, a Sydney 43.
During the cruise, Temptation visited Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, Newport, and other popular New England hot spots. Several Oakcliff team members participated in the cruise including Dawn, Colin Kennedy, Dave Hein, Anthony Velez, Killian Duclay, Charlie Lalumiere, Christain Langalis, Jacob Henley, and Andrew O'Donnell. Art Santry was very pleased, especially with the crew's light air work.
Speaking of Spookie, Steve Benjamin (the owner of Spookie) and the Virginia Maritime Museum are inviting everyone in Oyster Bay to tour the Virginia on Thursday starting at 4pm. She will be on the face dock at OBMC. The ship is 121 feet long and painted black, so you won't miss her. She also served as the 'mother ship' to the Carkeek 40 for the NYYC Annual Cruise prompting one Oakcliff sailor to comment - "Isn't it cool Spookie has a pirate ship for a tender?". If you are local, come and check her out. If not, here is a link to her history, and if you are in the market for a new boat, we have just learned that she is for sale.

Farr 47 Defends Youth Challenge Title at Ida Lewis Distance Race
The Farr 47 team will be returning to Newport this week to defend their title in the Ida Lewis Distance Race Youth Challenge this weekend.
After their stop in Nantucket, the Farr 47 team will be sailing to Newport to prepare for the challenge and industry tours at IYRS and Trident Fendering. This is the last week of the offshore program and this big push to rack up 1050 miles.
In order to qualify for the Youth Challenge, 40% of the crew must have reached their 14th birthday but have not turned 20 before August 15th. The 47 team is made up of 60% youths!
Best of luck to the team!

Dolphin Needs Your Help!
Dolphin has been invited to sail in the Herreshoff Classic Regatta where they will be celebrating the Newport 29. The only problem is we do not have a sponsor.
If there is a group of people who are qualified and interested in sailing here and underwriting the costs, please call Dawn ASAP at (415) 760-7642. Help Dolphin celebrate her 100th birthday! (Dawn is only half of that!)

Bill Helps Team Valiant Prepare for IFDS Worlds
At Sonar North Americans in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Bill joined Team Valiant, a para-olympic team, to help them prepare for IFDS Worlds, which will be held this week at the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron in Halifax. Team Valiant also included Rick Doerr, Hugh Freund, and Ross Cudlitz. The Para-Olympic teams provided lots of energy and talent on the dock.
The team did well in the light air during the practice days and first day of racing. However, when the breeze picked up, it provided many challenges for the team during the second day. After reviewing boat setup and trim, the team had a successful third day. During the last race, they rounded the last upwind mark in fifth and passed two boats early and were catching Peter Galloway in Fast Forward, the regatta winner, as we crossed the finish line overlapped. What a fun way to end a regatta with a great spinnaker run and 3rd place finish in a very competitive fleet!
Thank you to coaches Betsy Allison and Bill Shore!
Congrats team and Good luck at IFDS Worlds!
