Acorns Start Offshore Adventure

July 15, 2014
Greetings!

Our Offshore Acorns have arrived and already on their first adventure sailing Temptation back to Oyster Bay after NYYC Race Week! This week, they will be preparing both Farr 40s for the Around Long Island Race next week.

Acorns and Saplings Tour the Sailing Industry

On Monday, our Acorns and Saplings drove to Rhode Island to visit Hall Spars, US Sailing, New England Boatworks, Hinckley, Southern Spars Composite Rigging, and North Sails.

Inshore Acorn Kate Bjerregaard was amazed by New England Boatworks. "During the tour, we were able to see the new Rambler that is currently under construction." The acorns literally crawled inside the keel box of Rambler.

Throughout the tours, experts shared tips on how to be a valuable member to a team.

After the industry tours yesterday, the Acorns are ready for their first offshore adventure to help deliver Temptation back to Oyster Bay from Newport. They left the Shipyard dock at 9 am this morning and will be returning late tonight.

Big thank you to Hall Spars, US Sailing, NEB, Hinckley, Composite Rigging, and North Sails!

Saplings Overcome Gov Cup Challenges

Last week, Saplings Colin Kennedy and Charlie Lalumiere traveled to Balboa Yacht Club in Newport Beach, CA with other team member Myles Everett to compete in the 2014 Gov Cup.

Although the team did not make the quarter finals, they were still pleased with their performance after winning the consolation round and gained a lot of new knowledge about sailing the tricky Gov Cup 21s.

"My favorite moment of the event was our race against Sam Gilmour during the round robin," said Lalumiere. "We were able to completely control him upwind, kill a penalty, and still win the race. Gilmour ended up winning the event, so our win against him felt amazing."

Congrats to the team!

Temptation Takes Home the Bronze!

Temptation placed 3rd in their class during NYYC Race Week. Saplings including Brandon Yuen, Jacob Henley, Christain Langalis, Parker Lyman, and Avi Lessman contributed to the podium finish.

The event had a slow start as Wednesday racing was cancelled due to weather. However, the crew had consistent finishes including a 5th, 4th, and three 3rd place finishes over the next three days.

Sapling Jacob Henley found the short stadium racing to be a challenge for the boat. "The courses were short, so our crew work had to be tight, and mistakes cost us time," said Henley. "Overall, I think the crew did really well, and I am proud of our results."

Congrats to the Temptation team! Also check out Temptation in the NYYC Race Week Video.

REMINDER: Grade 5 on Saturday!

Oakcliff's July Open needs teams, umpires, and race committee for the this Saturday July 26th!

We are looking for teams to fill spots, and we need umpires and race committee to help make the event run smoothly.

Email Bill if you are interested in sailing or helping with the event

Congrats Grads and Newbies

Oakcliff Grad Ervin Grove, originally from Tennessee, teamed up with the Texan team for the Swan 42 Nationals. Somehow they managed to communicate through accents and won. Congratulations!

Before joining us for industry tours, Kate Bjerregaard (said "Bear-regard") skippered her family's Sydney 36 to a second place finish. Oakcliff is obviously proud of her, especially since the normal family dynamics have her on the bow and her Dad on the helm. We like the fact that she was pumped that she "didn't even hit anything".

Adopt a Sailor for the Weekend!

Oakcliff's Summer Invitational Clinegatta (July 31 to August 3) is still looking for housing for sailors and umpires.

If you are looking to adopt, but do not want a long term commitment, house a sailor for the weekend and return them on Sunday.

We also need volunteers for race committee and mark boat operators.
Email Bill if you are able to help out with housing or the event!
