Alvimedica Visits Oyster Bay
Alvimedica, a Volvo Ocean Race Team, visited Oyster Bay on their way to NYC last weekend.
The Alvimedica crew, which includes two Oakcliff alumni, Mark Towill and Charlie Enright, gave onboard tours of Alvimedica on Saturday afternoon to all of the Rose Cup sailors and friends of Oakcliff.
Later on Saturday night, the Alvimedica crew talked about their team to the Rose Cup sailors at Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club. Mark and Charlie also discussed how Oakcliff helped provide them the skills they needed to become professional sailors.
All of our Acorns and Saplings Charlie and Colin were fascinated by the boat and wanted to learn more about the Volvo Ocean Race. One of the sailors stepped off the boat and said, "I don't even have a reaction. I'm in shock."
If you want to find out more information about Team Alvimedica, please visit their Facebook page.

Acorns go on an Adventure
On Monday morning at 2:30 am, Acorns Kat Shiber, Kate Bjerregaard, Conner Harding, Austin Colpaert, and Stuart Henry helped deliver Dolphin to Mystic Seaport.
Dolphin, also known as the winningest boat on Long Island Sound, will turn 100 years old this year. She will be featured at the Wooden Boat Show in Mystic this weekend.
Before leaving the dock, the Acorns did their own planning, scheduling, budgeting, and shopping for the delivery. For an initial budget for food, they did pretty good job with an overrun of $1.47.
They arrived in Mystic during Tuesday afternoon after staying up all night. They completed a back-stage tour of Mystic Seaport before a dinner at Mystic Pizza.
On Wednesday morning, they woke up bright and early to catch a 7 am Cross Sound Ferry and then head back to Oyster Bay to help with a team building activity for with adventure campers and Wednesday night sailing. That is a full circle line tour!

Temptation, Farr 47, and Jeff Arrive in Bermuda!
Temptation, Farr 47, and Jeff are in Bermuda after leaving on June 20th from Newport, RI!
After several days of light air, the boats finally finished the race early this morning. Jeff MacFarlane finished earlier this morning after passing Temptation and 47 from behind. Temptation and the 47 also had a competitive race after each of them took turns passing each other. Temptation was second to finish out of the Oakcliff teams followed by the 47.
Temptation and the 47 crews are relieved that the race is finished! Sapling Parker said that he is glad that everyone made it safely to Bermuda after a wild 112 hour and 15 minute race on the 47.
Aboard Temptation, Bermuda newcomers Saplings Avi Lessman, Douglas Reynolds, and Jacob Henley quickly learned about the ins and outs of high performance sailing. For example, according to OD, the Saplings had to peel the A3, to the A2, to the, A1 all within three minutes when the breeze started die.
Overall for all teams, it was a slow race. Many other racers considered retiring including the winning boat who only continued on after 2 out of 14 crew members wanted to keep sailing. All our teams learned that if you stay patient and continue sailing that you will still get to the bar and a hot shower in the end.

Congrats to all our teams!

Duclays Save an Osprey
While putting a boat away on the beach on Tuesday, the Duclay family found an osprey with a broken wing floating in the water trying to swim away.
According Acorn Killian Duclay and younger brother Sean, the osprey's wing was heavily bleeding, so they called to have the osprey picked up and examined. The man who picked up the osprey, Mitch, called Sean this morning to explain that the osprey has a compressional fracture in its right wing, but it will remain in captivity for educational purposes.
All winter, Killian and Sean were sailing catamarans. They enjoyed sailing so much that they were inspired to to start their own veterans sailing program. They had been at the beach after filming a segment for FiOS television and sailing alongside future Olympians.
Thanks to the Duclay family the osprey will now live a long and healthy life!
