Prep Week in Newport!

June 17, 2014
Greetings!

Oakcliff had an awesome weekend on the podium yet again! Our newest Sapling Charlie Lalumiere won the Grade 5 Alzheimer's Regatta with an Oakcliff Sapling/Acorn team! Our Ker 50 team had two 3rd places this weekend at the NYYC Annual Regatta! Parker Lyman took home a 1st place finish in 12 Meter Class with the rest of the Victory '83 crew! Please read below for more information!

Also, just a reminder that Alvemedica will be joining us during Rose Cup this weekend! If anyone would like to make a donation and sail on her from Newport to Oyster Bay, to NYC or back, let us know. Please read below for details!

Don't forget to sign up for Tuesday night match race drills, Wednesday night fleet racing, and Thursday Classics! The Classics' BBQ this week will be in conjunction with the 44 sailors competing in the Rose Cup! The debrief will be concluded before the BBQ begins.

2nd Annual Alzheimer's Regatta is a Success!

This weekend, Oakcliff co-hosted the 2nd Annual Alzheimer's Grade 5 Regatta with Sagamore Yacht Club to help raise funds for the Alzheimer's Disease Resource Center in Bay Shore, NY.

Sagamore Yacht Club hosted a fleet race and paddling for poker event during the match race. Both Oakcliff and Sagamore raised a combined total of $23,000 to support research for Alzheimer's Disease!

Our Sapling Charlie Lalumiere won the event with a Sapling and Acorn team! The team also included Sapling Christian Langalis and Acorns Stewart Henry, Conner Harding, and Kat Shiber. Teams kept practicing after the racing completed, because the weather gave us perfect sailing conditions!

The regatta was such a success that plans are already under way for next year! It will likely take place on Father's Day weekend, so mark your calendars now!

Ker 50 and Farr 47 Prep for Bermuda!

Our Ker 50 and Farr 47 are currently in Newport prepping for the start of the Newport Bermuda Race on Friday!

After the Ker 50's finishes this weekend, they are feeling confident about the race to Bermuda! The conditions were light for them again this weekend, but everyone took advantage of the good weather after their wet and wavy delivery last week!

Our Farr 47 team finally delivered to Newport on Sunday after some technical difficulties and SWIMMING! One of our Sapling's Brandon Yuen finally learned how cold the water in Oyster Bay is after losing his balance on a RHIB on Sunday morning! Brandon actually expected the water to be colder! After a hot shower and dry clothes, the team finally made it to Newport without any other major events!

The teams have been extremely busy the past two days trying to make sure that everything is ready for the race. Please make sure you are following us on Twitter (@OakcliffSail) and our Facebook page for updates!

BEST OF LUCK TO BOTH TEAMS!

Sapling Parker Learns From the Pros!

This weekend, our Sapling Parker Lyman sailed on Victory '83 with a crew of  America's Cup sailors.

For Parker, this was an amazing opportunity to sail with professional sailors like Gary Jobson and learn new tips from the pros. For example, Parker learned a new technique for unwrapping a spinnaker from the head stay by gybing the main. Parker also received pointers from legend Jerry Kirby before he popped off to sail on Rambler!

Parker and the Victory '83 team won the 12 Meter class for the NYYC Annual Regatta. The team even passed Oakcliff's Temptation even though they started after them!

Without Oakcliff, Parker might have never gotten the opportunity since Parker was recruited through Oakcliff by Wally Henry. He is grateful for the opportunity that he was given. I can assure you he is still buzzing with excitement after the weekend!

Also thanks to Sapling Doug Reynolds for the awesome picture!

We hope to see you soon!

Sincerely,

Samantha Pilz
