Seminars in the Windy City

Next weekend I'll fly straight from Key West to Chicago to be at the Strictly Sail  Show on Navy Pier.   They have me scheduled for multiple seminars. Check the schedule at the show but I hope you can pick one and stop on in.

Taking the Helm:  My book, Taking The Helm, the story of the All Women's Round the World Race aboard Heineken is now in paperback. I'll have a few copies for sale but stop in as I share some sea stories and discuss the current state of the Volvo Ocean Race where the women on the all women's team SCA could be argued to be the team to beat.

Racing Details Everyone Forgets: Learn more about best practices for successful regattas.  We'll talk about reading the wind, listening to other boats, bringing the rule book, debriefing the team, etc.

Training Opportunities: Come find out where and how to get training to become a faster racer and a more confident cruiser

Feb 8: Bruce Cook Returns for Umpire Seminar

Calling all umpires in training, sailors who want to find out more about being an umpire and umpires who need to re-certify.

This is a great way to get your racing juices flowing without having to actually go sailing in the frigid February weather. We can always use more umpires at Oakcliff and throughout the country. Umpiring is a great way to give back to the sport you love and  become better acquainted with the match and team race rules and moves.

You can register through the link on the Oakcliff Calendar or directly with US Sailing. The seminar will include the option to take the umpire test required for certification. Subjects covered will be umpire speak, positioning and umpiring issues and recent calls.

Please make Bill's life a little easier and register in advance!

Environmental Film Screening at Jack Halyards
Join us Thursday, January 30th at Jack Halyards for a screening of Ocean Frontiers an award-winning documentary on the health of our oceans.

Happy hour 2-for-1 drink specials run 5-7pm and for the screening which begins at 7, Bernie is creating a special "green drink"...we can't wait to see what he comes up with!

Following the film there will be a short panel discussion with local leaders who are working hard to keep Oyster Bay clean.  The event is co-hosted by Jack Halyards, Oakcliff Sailing, The Waterfront Center and Friends of the Bay.  RSVP here
Building American Leaders
Thank you  SapGrads for making Oakcliff's mission of "Building American Leaders Through Sailing" come true!

Brendan Larrabee and Madeline Gill have been awarded US Sailing travel grants to attend the Sailing Leadership Forum.  Board Member, Dave Perry and I will also be representing Oakcliff as speakers at the inaugural conference to be held in San Diego, February 6-8.

To make it even more exciting, Brendan will be traveling straight from the Harken Academy in Wisconsin where he and fellow SapGrads John Coburn, Jon Hammond and Chris Poole will be learning from arguably the worlds best marine hardware company staff and engineers.  Madeline is hard at work in Oyster Bay fundraising for 212 Degree Racing  If you would like to learn more about supporting Oakcliff Teams email us!
First Ever Advanced Umpire Seminar: Recap
The first US Sailing Advanced Umpire Seminar to be held anywhere in the world was at Oakcliff and was a great success.

Stacey Gibbs flew all the way from Edmonton and Lance Smotherman came from Detroit to participate in this inaugural event.  Also in attendance were two people from the US Sailing Appeals Committee; Steve Shepstone and Oakcliff's Dave Perry.

What we found was that the seminar was also useful for non-umpires.  SapGrad Colin Kennedy said what he learned in one day would put him ahead of the competition on the water this spring.  We strongly encourage any elite match racer to attend our next umpire seminar.  You can sign up on the calendar or contact Race Director Bill Simon directly.

New: Tuesday Night to Become Grade 5's

Three times during the 2014 season we are changing back to back Tuesday nights from drills to regattas.   By making them Grade 5 Match Race regattas, competing skippers will earn ISAF points and have another opportunity to apply skills learned in drills to the real life pressure of a counting race.

If your team needs help finding crew we are here to assist.  Registration fees are waived for Oakcliff Supporters.

The scheduled dates are:

June 3 & 10  July 15 & 22 and August 12 &19

In addition we will have 5 Saturday Grade 5 Clinegattas from April to September. The Saturday Grade 5's include a morning drill followed by a round robin regatta.

There is no better way to improve your sailing than match racing.  Bring your crew and elevate your whole team to the next level.

Where Are They Now?

Our first Adult Acorn, Sena Akman,  is now an official member of the Farr 40 White Knight Racing Team!  Congratulations.

Sena came to Oakcliff specifically to train in Farr 40 racing.  She pushed herself hard while she was here and kept up her physical training  six days per week once she returned to Istanbul.  We were holding our breath during her tryouts but we kind of knew she would pull it off!

White Knight is owned by Zoltan Katinszki and races out of Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club in California.

Speaking of Farr 40s, James Downer is on the other side of the world delivering a Farr 40 to Tasmania this month.  James was joined by Max Vos aboard DK46 Exile, winners of the IRC division in the Pittwater to Coffs Harbour Ocean Race.

We have absolutely hit the ground running in 2014!  I hope you have added at least one of the numerous events from this newsletter to your calendar.    If you are Chicago or Key West I hope to see you.

Sincerely,

Dawn Riley
