Happy Happy Happy New Year!
Bring it 2014!
December 30, 2013

We hope you are enjoying the holidays and as we look forward to 2014 we want to say thank you to everyone who is part of the Oakcliff team. In reflection; wins, losses, successes and challenges are all part of the story but our favorite thing is that everyone who walks through our doors is committed.  Once a part of the team they are here to give 100%.   This energy from sailors, trainees, volunteers and donors is what sets us apart.   And looking to 2014... KEEP IT UP!

Kehoe Coaching in Miami
Oakcliff on the National Sailing Map in 2014
Oakcliff is making Oyster Bay a destination for American sailing. In 2014 we will be hosting many events which are going to bring the top sailors and increased spectators to Cold Spring and West Harbors.  Here are five featured events:

Rose Cup* June 18-22
Teenaged sailors will descend upon Oyster Bay for The US National Youth Match Racing Championship.  This event is for racers age 16-20 and will be sailed in Sonars. Oakcliff trainees enrolled in the Acorn Inshore program will be automatically registered and will receive personal coaching from Jay Kehoe.  For more information on our 2014 Acorn Programs click HERE.

US Women's Match Racing Championship July 10-13

America's top female match racers will compete aboard the world's largest fleet of Swedish Match 40s. Not only will the winning team be named a National Champion but they will also earn a spot to compete at the Buddy Melges Cup in Sheboygan, the 2014 US stop on the Women's International Match Race Series (WIMRS).

NACRA 17, 49er & 49erFX US National Championship August 22-24

Once again international teams will join Oakcliff's home fleet of 24 high performance skiffs and catamarans to swarm the waters of Oyster Bay.  The action packed regattas and intense training camps are designed to help Olympic hopefuls looking towards Rio.

Oakcliff International  September 3-7

The final regatta in the USA Grade 2 Grand Slam Series, the Oakcliff International is our premier match racing event of the season.  International teams pit themselves against the best in the US which breeds fierce competition.  Competitors also turn out for an invitation to the Congressional Cup and considerable prize money.

US Intercollegiate Sloop Nationals*  November 14-16

The Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) will hold the keel boat national championships in Oyster Bay in November.  The top 10 college teams who qualify through their conferences will match race Sonars on loan from SCYC and just possibly... in the snow.

Cross Train Your Team with Match Racing in 2014

You will get better. Your team will get better. Your fleet racing will get better.

Many sailing teams, especially the winning teams, can get stuck in a racing rut.  They know by looking at the scratch sheet where they will place, so may push just hard enough to make it to the podium.  The challenge and much of the fun is lost.

Boat owners tend to speak fondly of their early victories, when their team was working out the kinks and they clawed their way to the top.  This phase is usually where the lasting teamwork and the camaraderie  were built.

We can't promise that your team will relive those glory days, but we can guarantee that by placing  your team in coached match racing at Oakcliff that everyone's skills will be sharpened.  Your bow guy might be able to get around a W-L in his sleep, but suddenly he will need to hustle in an intense luffing match near the leeward mark.  You trimmers will be called upon to throw sails through jibes and trim constantly as the boat is literally doing circles.

Here's our prescription for beating your fleet racing slump:

Dave Perry Onshore Clinic

23 Weeks of Tuesday Night Match Racing Drills!

5x5: 5 Grade 5 Regattas

September Grade 4 Clinegatta

Set this as your end goal and get expert feedback on your team's season

That is THIRTY opportunities to get better!

Jay is Flying South ...
Jay Kehoe, our Training Program Director, packed up the family and hauled a trailer full of Nacra17s to Florida.

In Miami, Jay was on hand to  coach the Orange Bowl Regatta hosted by the Coral Reef Yacht Club.  This is the largest international youth regatta in the Western Hemisphere. With 750 competitors from more than 20 countries he spread the Oakcliff message far and wide.

Jay will return to Miami for the Miami Olympic Classes Regatta where Oakcliff 49er/49erFX skiffs and Nacra17 catamarans will be raced.  In a quest for gold in 2016, Oakcliff provides the US Sailing Team Sperry Top-Sider full access to our Olympic class boats for both team training and youth development throughout the year.

Potential Acorns:  Track Jay down and tell him you are interested and you might even get a limited edition Oakcliff tech shirt

Jay's final trips south will be to coach Oakcliff Supporters racing the series of Etchells regattas.  If you are an Oakcliff supporter in the area,  feel free to ask him for coaching or tuning advice.   Jay can be reached via email

Thank you so much to all of our loyal supporters who made 2013 such a success!

Wishing you a Happy Holidays and Glorious New Year from everyone at Oakcliff.

Sincerely,

NEXT WEEKEND
Start of the Quebec St Malo Race
Even though Oakcliff is still officially closed for the Holidays our dedicated program director Bill Simon and volunteer extraordinaire Bruce Cook are hosting an Advanced Umpire Seminar

This seminar is a review of the changes to Racing Rules of Sailing, Appendix D (Team Racing) Q (Fleet Race Umpiring); Rules of Thumb for Match Racing; and a free form discussion of topics identified by participants in the program. This is intended as a continuing education opportunity especially designed to be of interest to racers as well as umpires.  Although the test will only be for people who are currently certified umpires.
