Where Are They Now?
2014 Programs Announced!
November 26, 2013

Our 2014 brochure is done!   You can download your very own copy HERE or you can request one by email and we will mail it to you. We have some pretty cool additions for 2014 including a 9-day High Performance Camp and an exciting 10-day Adult Drop-In Program where a select few can jump in and experience the intense level of training the Acorns and Saplings recieve.

While we are looking forward, we thought we'd also take a moment and catch up with just a few of our SapGrads. In doing that, one thing became clear - this program is working! This year, SapGrads competed in the Mini Transat, The Red Bull Youth America's Cup, and the USA Grandslam Series to name a few. At least 3 SapGrads are pursuing a degree in Naval engineering and almost all are in school or employed. We have a 92.5% job placement rate. It's a pretty impressive group we've collected!

Stay tuned for more updates, below are just a handful of the SapGrad success stories.

Solomon Krevans - Road to the America's Cup

Solomon called last spring with a dilemma, he had committed to Oakcliff but had just been approached by the American Youth Sailing Force to race in the Youth America's Cup.   In about 3 seconds our reply was - go! We knew that Americans were going to be in short supply on the water in San Francisco and were so happy that one of our SapGrads was going to be representing Oakcliff and our country.

Solomon is smart, strong and determined and we see no reason why he won't be on the next US America's Cup team... whenever and wherever that may be. Solomon came to Oakcliff to expand his match racing experience in the summer of 2012. While here, he excelled in many areas. In the fall he went back to school and won the ICSA Match Racing National Championship as main trimmer & tactician for the Tufts University Jumbos.

We can't wait to see what Solomon does next but as he reports, Oakcliff will be a part of the basis for his successes.

"The hours I spent on the water at Oakcliff were valuable learning experiences, but my biggest takeaway was how to function as part of a team.  It's what enabled me to help my team perform at the Red Bull Youth Americas Cup."
Seth Cooley - Engineer and Newport Frostbiter

Seth recently celebrated his one-year anniversary with Composite Rigging, a division of Southern Spars, where he works as an R&D engineer developing their EC6 carbon rigging and other components.

Living in Newport where you trip over sailors just walking down the street Seth can typically be found on Newport Harbor frostbiting a Laser, nearly regardless of the weather.  Newport's Laser Fleet 413 is well known and very competitive with America's Cup sailors and designers rubbing gunnels with one-another and up to 40 boats on the line throughout the winter.  Though Seth has scored wins in several fleet 413 races, he has yet to 'win the day'; that is this winter's top objective.  Though, a trip to Key West or Antigua hasn't been ruled out.

Mike "Koko" Komar - Washington Success Story

Koko has transitioned out of the marine industry, but he is absolutely the definition of an Oakcliff success story! After 3 years of training, working and sailing at Oakcliff, Koko has accepted a position as a project manager at one of the largest commercial development companies, Washington DC based Rand Construction.

Ultimately, Koko earned this job based on his reputation for exceptional work while at Oakcliff. Koko captained our Ker 50, Temptation-Oakcliff sponsored by Cassidy Turley's Art Santry.  For two years Koko developed his project management and leadership skills. He also built these skills as a tactician for many teams including Oakcliff's David Storrs match racing team (ranked #4 in US), and from training Acorns and Saplings in rigging and sailmaking.

Koko won the respect of his fellow sailors, as Collin Weston explains, "Koko is a great guy. I learned a lot from him, both on and off the water. Not only did he read engineering books for fun, he always had the answer when it came to splicing or sail repair."

Oakcliff's 92.5% job placement rate is because Saplings learn transferable skills from technical skills to how to communicate with future job prospects. Managing a year-round campaign with constant competitive changes and a tight budget is going to make managing construction projects easy.

Parker Lyman - More than One Route Around the World
Parker arrived at Oakcliff with a clear and singular goal: to become a media crew member in the Volvo Ocean Race. Once here, Parker made an abrupt shift in his plans, "At Oakcliff I met some people from Webb Institute. My goal was always to do Volvo or America's Cup but looking at my position, where I was and my skill set, it made more sense to do engineering to get there rather than media."

Ironically Webb is a top-ranked university with a clear and singular academic option, a double major in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. Parker is still interested in participating in the Volvo or America's Cup and has been competing on Webb's big boat team. Unfortunately, he recently tore his ACL, MCL and Meniscus and is currently on medical leave in Vermont hoping to be back on the water as soon as the snow melts.

Hobie Ponting - Mach 1 Full Time at Oakcliff

Hobie Ponting is from Wisconsin where he had trouble finding others who wanted to sail as much as he did, so, he started sailing singlehanded.   He denies the rumor that he was set to singlehand a Yngling across Lake Michigan when he applied for and was accepted at Oakcliff.

Once here he epitomized the words 'Self Starter' volunteering to travel to Michigan and pack up a Farr 47 which had been donated to Oakcliff and then lead the around-the-clock prep work to get her ready for the Halifax Race. They pulled it off and raced and ended up 2nd in class and 3rd overall.  That was all in his first few weeks in Oyster Bay!

Hobie was recently asked how different the racing and learning is at Oakcliff, rather than the college experience and replied:

"Are you kidding me?!  You learn more in a week here than you do in all 4 years of college sailing.   We move at Mach 1! One weekend I am doing fleet racing at Manhasset Bay Fall Series in a Ker 11.3; then the next weekend it's a Grade 3 Match Race in a  Match 40.  Now we are disassembling and servicing 76 boats!"

Hobie has recently joined Oakcliff full time.

Collin Weston - Match Racing to Mega Yachts

Colin graduated from Texas A&M Galveston in May and is currently living in New Orleans working towards his Master's in Naval Architecture at the University of New Orleans. He is also working at Trinity Yachts where they build mega yachts.

He reports, "I'm learning a lot but have been too busy to get on the water much. Hopefully that will change in the Spring and I can get going on either my match racing campaign or do some offshore racing."

Ervin Grove - Industry Tour + Character = Southern Job

Ervin first made contact with Oakcliff by crashing a Safety at Sea Seminar where Oakcliff's Executive Director was speaking. He rocked up on a skateboard and started to sell himself into the program. His goal was to learn as much as he could about sailing and fixing big boats with a long-term goal of racing in the 2015 Atlantic Ocean Series.

Ervin excelled and entertained at Oakcliff and one of our Industry Tour in Newport he made contacts that led to a job in composite rigging at Southern Spars. Ervin checked in recently, "It's starting to get chilly in Newport so I'm looking for excuses to travel south for regattas.  Southern Spars is busier than ever and I've done as much sailing as possible all summer. "

Anyone down South looking for stellar crew?
Andrew O'Donnell- He's Back!

OD graduated from the Sapling program in 2012 and went straight to the IRYS to specialize in composites technology and worked as a mate on  the 12-meter Northern Light.  OD reconnected with us when we bumped into him last summer at the Nantucket Pro Am Regatta. He asked for a drink ticket and ended up with a job instead!  OD will be replacing Koko as the boat captain of the Ker 50 Temptation-Oakcliff and is currently using his significant composite and painting skills refurbishing the 76 strong Oakcliff fleet.

OD originally came to Oakcliff because he was attracted to the incredible energy and flexibility at Oakcliff. As he explains, "If you have an idea and you think it's going to work everyone here is going to help you make it happen."

Specifically, OD is inspired by SapGrad Jeff MacFarlane who trained and built his campaign for the 2013 Mini Transat while at Oakcliff. Jeff continues to provide encouragement as OD becomes increasingly interested in single-handed racing.

OD now embodies the Oakcliff energy which initially attracted him. According to Bill Simon, "OD showed up early last year as one of the first Saplings to report. He has been a hard worker, who is always trying to learn, with a can do attitude from day one. Everyone wants OD on their team. "

Dan Flanigan - Reporting in from Southampton UK

Dan Flanigan arrived at Oakcliff slightly late because he and his friends were finishing up building and launching a robotic boat that would attempt to sail from Newport to England and it just kept getting better from there. Dan jumped into and became a leader on the Oakcliff Youth Farr 40 Team and finished out the year rebuilding the prod for the Ker 11.5 and teaching fellow Saplings as he was doing it. Clearly we were happy to have Dan here and from a note he sent over, he feels the same.

"Oakcliff allowed me opportunities in the sailing world that many sailors only dream of. From racing to Halifax to skippering a grade 3 match race, these experiences have had an enormous impact on my sailing ability, but also on my person. After a summer sailing and working at Oakcliff I have gained an appreciation for the hard work, organization, and motivation that it takes to make up a quality race program.

In particular I would like to acknowledge the amazing opportunity to race as a youth team in the Farr 40 circuit, culminating with the Farr 40 Worlds. The team put a huge amount of effort into making the program happen and in the end it was one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever been part of. Asking Terry Hutchinson or any other one of the top sailors in the world about rig tune, or sail trim is something not many sailors will ever get to experience.

I am now pursuing a Master's Degree in Yacht and Small Craft Design at the University of Southampton.  The skills and knowledge that I developed during my summer at Oakcliff has created a sense of confidence that has allowed me to be a leader on the water and even in the class room, as a student who understands key practical aspects as well the theory behind yacht design."

We have a feeling Dan will be back.

Sena Akman - Beta Adult Acorn

Last August we received an email from Sena, a woman in Istanbul Turkey. She explained that there was a fleet of Farr 40s in a harbor on the Bosporus and while she very much wanted to sail, they were less than enthusiastic about giving a woman a shot. So we invited her to train at Oakcliff.

Three days later Sena arrived and immediately started doing everything the Acorns did and with extreme enthusiasm. The crowning achievement of the two weeks she spent here was passing a Turkish Farr 40 as she sailed the Oakcliff Farr 47 into Newport Harbor.

Sena 's training was such a success that she inspired a new offering for 2014.

For the first time, adults can drop in and see how they stack up against the young pros in the Adult Acorn program.  Check out out our 2014 brochure HERE!

Back in Turkey, Sena continued to train on and off the water, working with a trainer 6 days a week building on her Oakcliff experience with Hammer Human Performance and Sport.  Her hard work is paying off as she has just been invited to try out for White Knight racing, the most competitive Turkish Farr 40.

"I am so excited of course, this is a dream for me", Sena emailed. "I am committed and will do my best. I will work hard.  I am bearing great responsibility with your name now, simply because these people know that I spend time at Oakcliff, trained there, hence, it is of the utmost importance that I succeed."

Additionally, this Fall Sena hosted SapGrad Chris Smith for a week in Istanbul. We didn't really correctly envision how far and wide the Oakcliff family was going to spread but we are not complaining!

So most of you know I'm not really a sentimental person but I have to say, especially with reflection of this time of year that I am very thankful for the Lawrence Family, for the spectacularly motivated trainees and for all of the generous supporters who have made Oakcliff what it is today and am super excited to dive into 2014.

Happy Thanksgiving from everyone at Oakcliff!

A tiny bit emotionally and very sincerely,

Dawn and the Oakcliff Sailing Team

Jacon the Artist
Jacon Navigates to Halifax
Big thank you to Jacon who was the designer of much of the Sapling Program as it stands today and also returns each year to design our brochure.  It is a GREAT one this year!

He is currently in Vermont and has been doing quite a bit of mountain and ice climbing and has some other pretty cool experiential learning programs he is working on designing.

Crazy Cat Sailors
There is a belief that Cat sailors are a little bit crazy - add in the French blood and Acorn Kilian Duclay is a special mix. And just to prove it he and his family and some friends are frostbiting this winter - on Hobie Cats!  Better them than me!
